  • At the present time when the limits of the magnetic storage systems appear, the holographic data storage (HDS) devices with high data transfer rate and high recording density are emerging as attractive candidates for next-generation optical storage devices. In this paper, to effectively improve the detection performance that is degraded by the two-dimensional inter-symbol interference under the HDS channel environment and the pixel misalignment, an iterative two-dimensional equalization scheme is proposed based on the contraction mapping theorem. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, for various holographic channel environments we measure the BER performance using computer simulation and compare the proposed one with the conventional threshold detection scheme, which verifies the superiority of the proposed scheme.

  • For designing high Tc superconductor proceeding bearing(HTSJB) which is used on a flywheel energy storage system which requests the free of the bearing loss caused by the friction, it is necessary to understand the basic characteristics of the classical superconductor proceeding bearing because the mechanical characteristics of the HTSJB are identified by the magnetic relationships between the permanent magnet(PM) and the high Tc superconductor(HTS). In this paper, using the method, frozen image model, the force problems between the PM and the HTS were solved and then the dynamic characteristics of the rotor inside of the HTSJB can be expected in advance by using the basic characteristics between the PM and the HTS. The coefficient of friction of the HTSJB was measured in the vacuum environment. From the results, the mechanical characteristics of HTSJB can be identified using the numerical models.

  • Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) consists of a high-speed flywheel with an integral motor/generator suspended on magnetic bearings and in an evacuated housing. Permanent magnet (PM) machines as the FESS motor/generator are a popular choice. since there are no excitation losses which mean substantial increase in the efficiency. In this paper, the basic design and the steady-state performances of a permanent magnet synchronous high speed motor/generator for FESS are presented.

  • The superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system which has characteristics of high efficiency and rapid response is a way to maximize a utility's generation and transmission capacity. But SMES is required for much capital and operating cost. Therefore, It is important to determine the optimal size of SMES for constructing and operating. In this paper, we proposed a method of determinating an optimal size of a large scale of SMES for energy storage and a small scale of SMES for stabilizing power system.

  • A flywheel system is an electromechanical energy storage device that stores energy by rotating a rotor. The rotating part, supported by magnetic bearings, consists of the metallic shaft, composite rims of fiber-reinforced materials, and a hub that connects the rotor to the shaft. The delamination in the fiber wound composite rotor often lowered the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. In this work, an advanced hybrid composite rotor with a split hub was designed to both overcome the delamination problem in composite rim and prevent separation between composite rim and metallic shaft within all range of rotational speed. It was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite clement method. In order to demonstrate the predominant perfom1ance of the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, a high spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm. Four radial strains and another four circumferential strains were measured using a wireless telemetry system. These measured strains were in excellent agreement with the FE analysis. Most importantly, the radial strains were reduced using the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, and all of them were compressive. As a conclusion, a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the proposed flywheel rotor was achieved, and it can lower the radial stresses within the composite rotor, enhancing the performance of the flywheel rotor.

  • Recently, utility network is getting more and more complicated and huge. In addition to, demands of power conversion devices which have non-linear switching devices are getting more and more increased. Consequently, according to the non-linear power semiconductor devices, current harmonics are unavoidable. Those current harmonics flow back to utility network and become one of the reasons which make the voltage distortion. On the other hands, voltage sag from sudden increasing loads is also one of the terrible problems inside of utility network. In order to compensate the current harmonics and voltage sag problem, AF(Active Filter) systems could be a good solution method and SMES(Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) system is a very good promising source due to the high response time of charge and discharge. Therefore, the combined system of AF and SMES is a wonderful device to compensate both harmonics current and voltage sag. However, unfortunately SMES needs a superconducting magnetic coil. Because of the introduction of superconducting magnetic coil, quench problem caused by unexpected reasons is always existed. In case of discharge operation, quench is a significantly harmful factor according as it decreases the energy capacity of SMES. Therefore, this paper presents a decision method of the specification of the AF-SMES system considering internal fault condition. Especially, authors analyzed the change of the original energy capacity of SMES regarding to the size of resistance caused by quench of superconducting magnetic coil. Finally, based on this simulation, authors manufactured actual Active Filter System using DSP.

  • Owing to the increasing worldwide interest in green technology and renewable energy sources, flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs) are gaining importance as a viable alternative to traditional battery systems. Since the energy storage capacity of an FESS is proportional to the principal mass-moment of inertia and the square of the running speed, a design that maximizes the principal inertia while operatingrunning at the highest possible speed is important. However, the requirements for the stability of the system may impose a constraint on the optimal design. In this paper, an optimal design of an FESS that not only maximizes the energy capacity but also satisfies the requirements for system stability and reduces the sensitivity to external disturbances is proposed. Cross feedback control in combination with a conventional proportional-derivative (PD) controller is essential to reduce the effect of gyroscopic coupling and to increase the stored energy and the specific energy density.

  • Due to advantages of NAND flash memory such as non-volatility, low access latency, low energy consumption, light weight, small size and shock resistance, it has become a better alternative over traditional magnetic disk drives, and has been widely used. Traditional DBMSs including mobile DBMSs may run on flash memory without any modification by using Flash Translation Layer (FTL), which emulates a random access block device to hide the characteristics of flash memory such as "erase-before-update". However, most existing FTLs are optimized for file systems, not for DBMSs, and traditional DBMSs are not aware of them. Also, traditional DBMSs do not consider the characteristics of flash memory. In this paper, we propose a flash-conscious storage system for DBMSs that utilizes flash memory as a main storage medium, and carefully put the characteristics of flash memory into considerations. The proposed flash-conscious storage system exploits log records to avoid costly update operations. It is shown that the proposed storage system outperforms the state.

  • High temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS SMES) is known as an effective solution to significantly decrease the voltage and power fluctuations of grid connected wind power generation system (WPGS). This paper implements an effective control scheme of a back-toback converter with shunt-connected HTS SMES for the frequency regulation of an islanded microgrid. The back-to-back converter is used to connect the WPGS to the grid. A large-scale HTS SMES is linked to the DC side of the back-to-back converter through a two-quadrant DC/DC chopper. An adaptive control strategy is implemented for the back-to-back converter and the two-quadrant DC/DC chopper to improve the efficiency of the whole system. The performance of the proposed control system was evaluated in a test power system using PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation results clearly show that the back-to-back converter with shunt-connected HTS SMES operates effectively with the proposed control strategy for stabilizing the power system frequency fluctuations.
