It is reported that the flooding rate in low permeability sandstones is low and the oil recovery is hard to increase after water breakthrough. Understanding characteristics of waterflood is hence important for the recovery improvement. In this work, flooding tests on low permeability sandstones were conducted. The corresponding flooding characteristics were investigated by means of CT scanning and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Effects of irreducible water and different rates were also discussed in detail. Experimental results reveal a piston-like displacement at a low rate in low permeability samples. The saturation profile is steep and almost vertical to the forward direction. The results at a low rate confirm that once water broke through, increasing the flooding rate or flooding time can hardly reduce the remaining oil inside the sample. It is probably due to the high pore-throat ratio proven by rate-controlled mercury. Results also confirm that the presence of initial water enhanced sweep efficiency substantially. On one hand, because water had previously occupied the small pores, the subsequent oil can only invade relatively large pores and became more movable. On the other hand, stable collars can not form due to the steep front, which may suppress the snap-off.
Real-time formation of $L1_0$ phase of FePt nanoparticles in the gas phase during ultrasonic-spray pyrolysis is first discussed in the present study. Without any post heat treatment, $L1_0$ phase of FePt nanoparticles appeared at the temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ in the gas phase synthesis. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed that FePt nanoparticles less than 10 nm in size contained small volume of $L1_0$ fct phase. However, in other samples obtained at the temperature below $900^{\circ}C$, iron oxide phase co-existed and no evidence of phase transformation was found. Thus, it is anticipated that the time of flight of particles required for crystallization and phase transformation was extended according to the increase of the collision rate. Finally, magnetic properties represented by coercivity and saturation magnetization and functional groups on the particle surface were discussed based on VSM and FT-IR results.
Condition monitoring of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and detecting faults such as eccentricity and demagnetization are essential for ensuring system reliability. Motor current signal analysis is the most commonly used precursor for detecting faults in the PMSM drive system. However, the current signature responds sensitively to the load and temperature of the motor, thereby making it difficult to monitor faults in real- applications. Therefore, in this study, a condition monitoring methodology that detects motor faults, including their classification with standstill conditions, is proposed. The objective is to detect and classify faults of PMSMs by using programmable inverter without additional sensors and systems for detection. Both DC and AC were applied through the d-axis of a three-phase motor, and the change in incremental inductance was investigated to detect and classify faults. Simulation with finite element analysis and experiments were performed on PMSMs in healthy conditions as well as with eccentricity and demagnetization faults. Based on the results obtained from experiments, the proposed method was confirmed to detect and classify types of faults, including their severity.
Magnetization Transfer (MT) imaging generates contrast dependent on the phenomenon of magnetization exchange between free water proton and restricted proton in macromolecules. In biological materials in knee, MT or cross-relaxation is commonly modeled using two spin pools identified by their different T2 relaxation times. Two models for cross-relaxation emphasize the role of proton chemical exchange between protons of water and exchangeable protons on macromolecules, as well as through dipole-dipole interaction between the water and macromolecule protons. The most essential tool in medical image manipulation is the ability to adjust the contrast and intensity. Thus, it is desirable to adjust the contrast and intensity of an image interactively in the real time. The proton density (PD) and T2-weighted SE MR images allow the depiction of knee structures and can demonstrate defects and gross morphologic changes. The PD- and T2-weighted images also show the cartilage internal pathology due to the more intermediate signal of the knee joint in these sequences. Suppression of fat extends the dynamic range of tissue contrast, removes chemical shift artifacts, and decreases motion-related ghost artifacts. Like fat saturation, phase sensitive methods are also based on the difference in precession frequencies of water and fat. In this study, phase sensitive methods look at the phase difference that is accumulated in time as a result of Larmor frequency differences rather than using this difference directly. Although how MT work was given with clinical evidence that leads to quantitative model for MT in tissues, the mathematical formalism used to describe the MT effect applies to explaining to evaluate knee disorder, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear and meniscal tear. Calculation of the effect of the effect of the MT saturation is given in the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) which is a quantitative measure of the relative decrease in signal intensity due to the MT pulse.
Magnetic and structural properties of $(CoFe_2O_4)_{1-x}(Y_3Fe_5O_{12})_x$ powders (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1) grown by a conventional ceramic method were investigated using X-ray diffractormeter (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The XRD results for the powders annealed at 120$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that no other peak was observed except for the ones from cobalt ferrite and the garnet powder. SEM micrographs indicated that cobalt ferrite and garnet powders were aggregated and completely formed together. It was hard to identify which part of the powders was the garnet or the cobalt ferrite. Mossbauer spectra for powders grown separately and mixed mechanically consisted of sub-spectra of cobalt ferrite and garnet, however, powders annealed together had an extra sub-spectrum, which was related with the interaction between iron ions at the grain surfaces of cobalt ferrite and the garnet: cobalt ferrite and garnet particles were located very closely. The value of the saturation magnetization measured by a VSM as a function of composition ratio agreed very well with the ones based on the theoretical calculation.

The goal of this research is the create novel magnets with no rare-earth contents, with larger energy product by comparison with currently used ferrites. For this purpose we developed nano-sized hard-type/soft-type composite ferrite in which high remanent magnetization (Mr) and high coercivity (Hc). Nano-sized Ba-ferrite, Ni-Zn ferrite and $BaFe_{12}O_{19}/Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ composite ferrites were prepared by sol-gel combustion method by use of glicine-nitrate and citric acid. Nanocomposite ferrites were calcined at temperature range $700-900^{\circ}C$ for 1h. According to the X-ray diffraction patterns and FT-IR spectra, single phase of NiZn-ferrite and Ba-ferrite were detected and hard/soft nanocomposite ferrite was indicated to the coexistence of the magnetoplumbite-structural $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ and spinel-structural $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ that agreed with the standard JCPDS 10-0325 data. The particle size of nanocomposite turn out to be less than 120 nm. The nanocomposite ferrite shows a single-phase magnetization behavior, implying that the hard magnetic phase and soft magnetic phase were well exchange-coupled. The specific saturation magnetization ($M_s$) of the nanocomposite ferrite is located between hard ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) and soft ferrite($Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$). The remanence (Mr) of nanocomposite ferrite is much higher than that of the individual $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ and $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite, and $(BH)_{max}$ is increased slightly.

Nano sized mixed metal hexagonal ferrite powders with improved magnetic properties have been prepared by sol-gel method using propylene oxide as a gelation agent. To obtain the desired ferrite, two different metal ions were used. One of the ions has only +2 formal charge. The key step in the processes is that hydrated $Ba^{2+}$ or $Sr^{2+}$ ions are hydrolyzed and condensed at the surface of the previously formed $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ gel. In this processes, all the reaction can be finished within a few minutes. The magnetic properties of the produced powder were improved by heat treatment. The highest values of the magnetic properties were achieved at temperature $150^{\circ}C$ lower than those of the previously published values. The highest observed values of coercivity and the saturation magnetization of Sr-ferrite and Ba-ferrite powder were 6198 Oe, 5155 Oe and 74.4 emu/g, 68.1 emu/g, respectively. The ferrite powder annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ showed spherical particle shapes. The resulting spheres which were formed by the aggregation of nanoparticles with size 3~5 nm have diameter around 50 nm. The powder treated at $800^{\circ}C$ showed hexagonal-shaped grains with crystallite size above 500 nm.
We have investigated some crystallographic, magnetic, and transport properties of the first colossal magnetoresistive compounds $La_{1-x}Ba_{x}MnO_3(0\leq\chi\leq$1)$(5\;K\leqT\leq360K,-5T\leqH\leq5T$ and resistivity $(100K\leqT\leq350K$measurements. $La_{1-x}Ba_{x}MnO_3$ were found to be ferromagnetic for all x.The $La_{1-x}Ba_{x}MnO_3$were found to be insulating for x< 0.2, metallic for 0.20.5. The magnitude of saturation magnetization (Ms) increased until x=1/8 and had theoretical maximum Ms for 0.13$\sfrac{3}{8}$ and had a constant value of 335~340 K for x>$\sfrac{3}{8}$. For $x\geq0.5$ the $La_{1-x}Ba_{x}MnO_3$ samples showed a percolation-type conduction behavior and enhanced low field magnetoresistance caused by simultaneous occurrence of the chemical/magnetic phase separation.

Effect of cobalt substitution on the sintering behavior and magnetic properties of a NiZnCu ferrite was studied. $Ni_{0.36-x}Co_xZn_{0.44}Cu_{0.22}Fe_{1.98}O_4(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.04)$ ferrite was fabricated by a solid stat reaction method. It was proposed and experimentally verified that $Co^{2+}$ substituted NiZnCu ferrite was effective on improving the quality factor and magnetic properties of NiZnCu ferrites for multilayer chip inductors. The ferrite was sintered without sintering aids, at $880{\sim}920^{\circ}C$, for 2 h and the initial permeability, quality factor, density, shrinkage, saturation magnetization, and coercivity were also measured. The quality factor (Q) was increased linearly up to x = 0.01 and decreased rapidly over x = 0.01. As the cobalt content increased, the initial permeability and density of the ferrites decreases. The initial permeability of toroidal sample for $Ni_{0.35}Co_{0.01}Zn_{0.44}Cu_{0.22}Fe_{1.98}O_4$ ferrites sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ was 130 at 1 MHz and quality factor was 230.
FeN thin films for inductive recording heads were sputter deposited using RF diode sputtering mehtod from a pure iron target onto 7059 glass substrates, and their magnetic properties were measured. The magnetic properties were greatly affected by film thickness, gas pressure, sputter power and flow ratio of $N_{2}$ to Ar. Single layer FeN films with their thickness varied from $1,000\;{\AA}$ to $6,000\;{\AA}$ were doposited. 800 W sputter power, 3 mT gas pressure, $N_{2}$ to Ar flow ratio of 6.6 : 100 were the sputtering conditions. Up to 7 layers of FeN films having total thickness of $6,000\;{\AA}$ were deposited using $SiO_{2}$ of $30\;{\AA}$ thickness as intermediate layers and their coercivity and saturation magnetization were measured. The sputtering conditions were the same as those in the single layer films. Easy axis coercivity of the single layer FeN films gradually decreased as their thickness was increased, but for the films with their thicknesses above $3,000\;{\AA}$, the coercivity changed very little. As the number of the FeN layers were increased, the coercivity decreased We estimated the grain size of FeN films from the FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of X-ray diffraction peaks. The grain size steadily decreased from about $200\;{\AA}$ to $120\;{\AA}$ as the number of layers were increased. Minimum hard axis coercivity of 0.4 Oe was obtained when the number of layers was four. Maximum relative permeability was 2,900 when the number of layers was three. The cut off frequeocy of the multilayer films were above 100 MHz.
