  • Abstract In this study characteristics of Al-doped ZnO thin film by HIPIMS (High power impulse sputtering) are discussed. Deposition speed of HIPIMS with conventional balanced magnetic field is measured at about 3 nm/min, which is 30% of that of conventional RF sputtering process with the same working pressure. To generate additional magnetic flux and increase sputtering speed, electromagnetic coil is mounted at the back side of target. Under unbalanced magnetic flux from electromagnet with 1.5A coil current, deposition speed of AZO thin film is increased from 3 nm/min to 4.4 nm/min. This new value originates from the decline of particles near target surface due to the local magnetic flux going toward substrate from electromagnet. AZO film sputtered by HIPIMS process shows very smooth and dense film surface for which surface roughness is measured from 0.4 nm to 1 nm. There are no voids or defects in morphology of AZO films with varying of magnetic field. When coil current is increased from 0A to 1A, transmittance of AZO thin film decreases from 80% to 77%. Specific resistance is measured at about $2.9{\times}10-2\Omega{\cdot}cm$. AZO film shows C-axis oriented structure and its grain size is calculated at about 5.3 nm, which is lower than grain size in conventional sputtering.

  • There are few reports of high frequency loss behavior in the near-field for magnetic films with semiconducting properties, even though semiconducting magnetic materials, such as soft magnetic amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline thin films, have been demonstrated. The electromagnetic loss behavior of multilayer magnetic films with semiconducting properties on the microstrip line in quasi-microwave frequency band was analyzed numerically using a commercial finite-element based electromagnetic solver. The large increase in the absorption performance and broadband characteristics of the semiconducting/insulating layer magnetic films examined in this study were attributed to an increase in the loss factor of resistive loss. The electromagnetic reflection increased significantly with increasing conductivity, and the loss power deteriorated significantly. The numerical results of the magnetic field distribution showed that a strong radiated signal on the microstrip line was emitted with increasing conductivity and decreasing film thickness due to re-reflection of the radiated wave from the surface of the magnetic film, even though the emitted levels varied with film thickness.

  • This study examines the insulation coating technology of Fe-Si-Cr powder via selective oxidation annealing, which oxidizes elements selectively by controlling the oxidation potential. The study calculated the oxidation driving force of Fe, Si, and Cr, and conducted a thermodynamic analysis of oxidation and reduction conditions according to temperature and oxidation potential. Based on the results, a selective oxidation annealing was performed in an atmosphere in which Fe is reduced and only Si and Cr are selectively oxidized. The oxidation potential was controlled through the partial pressure ratio of hydrogen and water vapor. The XPS analysis results confirmed that a Si and Cr complex oxide layer formed on the powder surface after the selective oxidation annealing. Afterward, withstanding voltages were analyzed to evaluate the insulation property. Then, the withstanding voltage of the powder applying the selective oxidation annealing increased significantly compared to that of the initial powder. Further analysis showed that the powder annealed in an air atmosphere had a significantly lower saturation magnetic flux density than the initial powder, while the powder applying the selective oxidation annealing had only a slightly reduced saturation magnetic flux density.

  • The degradation mechanism of soft magnetic properties of $Fe-Hf-N/Cr/SiO_2$ thin films reacted with a bonding glass was investigated. When $Fe-Hf-N/Cr/SiO_2$ films were annealed under $600^{\circ}C$ without the bonding glass, the compositions and the soft magnetic properties of Fe-Hf-N layers were not changed. However, after reaction with the bonding glass at $550^{\circ}C$, the soft magnetic properties of the film were degraded. At $600^{\circ}C$, the saturation magnetization of the reacted film decreased to 13.5 kG, and its coercivity increased to 4 Oe, and its effective permeability decreased to 700. It was founded that O diffused from the glass into the Fe-Hf-N layers during the reaction and generated $HfO_2$ phases. It was considered that the soft magnetic properties of the $Fe-Hf-N/Cr/SiO_2$ films reacted with the bonding glass were primarily degraded by the formation of the Fe-Hf-O-N layer of which the Fe content was below 60 $at\%$, and secondarily degraded by the Fe-Hf-O-N layer above 70 $at\%$.

  • In recent years, a rapid increase in demands for the soft magnetic composite parts has been created and it has been tried to improve their properties by various processing methods, alloying elements and compaction parameters. Warm compaction method has been used for the reduction of residual stress, the improvement of magnetic properties and the higher densities. In this work, the effects of warm compaction and polymer binder on magnetic properties of Fe powder core were investigated. The sintering powder, Fe oxide, was ball-milled for 30n hours. And then ball-milled Fe oxide powder was reduced through hydrogen reduction process. The hydrogen reduced Fe powder and polymer binder were mixed by 3-D turbular mixer. And then the mixed powder was warm-compacted. The magnetic properties such as core loss and permeability were measured by B-H curve analyzer.

  • The effect of the hot-compaction temperature on the microstructure and magnetic properties of anisotropic nanocrystalline magnets was investigated. The hot-compaction temperature was found to impact both the magnetic properties and the microstructure of die-upset magnets. The remanence of the isotropic precursor increases slightly with the improved hot-compaction temperature, and the grains start to grow on the flake boundary at higher hot-compaction temperatures. After hot deformation, it was found that the change in the magnetic properties was the inverse of that observed with the hot-compaction temperature. Microstructural investigation showed that die-upset magnets inherit the microstructural characteristics of their precursor. For the die-upset magnets, hot pressed at low temperature, scarcely any abnormal grain growth on the flake boundary can be seen. For those hot pressed at higher temperatures, however, layers with large equiaxed grains could be observed, which accounted for the poor alignment during the hot deformation, and thus the poor magnetic properties.

  • Antiferromagnet (AFM)/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer structures are widely used in the magnetic devices of sensor and memory applications, as AFM materials can induce unidirectional anisotropy of the FM material via exchange coupling. The strength of the exchange coupling is known to be sensitive to quality of the interface of the AFM/FM bilayers. In this study, we utilize proton irradiation to modify the interface structures and investigate its effect on the magnetic properties of AFM/FM structures, including the exchange bias and magnetic thermoelectric effect. The magnetic properties of IrMn/CoFeB structures with various IrMn thicknesses are characterized after they are exposed to a proton beam of 3 MeV and $1{\sim}5{\times}10^{14}ions/cm^2$. We observe that the magnetic moment is gradually reduced as the amount of the dose is increased. On the other hand, the exchange bias field and thermoelectric voltage are not significantly affected by proton irradiation. This indicates that proton irradiation has more of an influence on the bulk property of the FM CoFeB layer and less of an effect on the IrMn/CoFeB interface.

  • The influence of crystallization treatment on the structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of $Gd_{71}Ni_{29}$ melt-spun ribbons has been investigated in detail. Annealing of the melt-spun samples at 610 K for 30 min, a majority phase with a $Fe_3C$-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Pnma) and a minority phase with a CrB-type orthorhombic structure (space group, Cmcm) were obtained in the amorphous matrix. The amorphous melt-spun ribbons undergo a second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition at 122 K. For the annealed samples, two magnetic phase transitions caused by amorphous matrix and $Gd_3Ni$ phases occur at 82 and 100 K, respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy change $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ is $9.0J/(kg{\cdot}K)$ (5T) at 122 K for the melt-spun ribbons. The values of $(-{\Delta}S_M)^{max}$ in annealed ribbons are 1.0 and $5.7J/(kg{\cdot}K)$, corresponding to the two adjacent magnetic transitions.
