  • The inherent drawback of iron-core type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) is detent force that is dependent on several major factors such as PM length, slot clearance, and skewing. To minimize the detent force, this paper proposes a structure optimization using the combination computation of two dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA) and response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM, that is a collection of the statistical and mathematical techniques, is utilized to predict the global optimal solution based on the FEA calculated results of the detect forces for different combinations of factors. With the help of the combination computation the high capacity iron-core type PMLSM with more than 12000 N propulsion forces only contains less than 3 N detent forces.

  • This paper presents the analysis and optimization of air-core permanent magnet linear synchronous motor with overlapping concentrated windings to achieve high thrust density, high thrust per copper losses and low thrust ripple. For the motor design, we adopt equivalent magnetizing current (EMC) method to analyze the magnetic field and give analytical formulae for calculation of motor parameters such as no-load back EMF, dynamic force, thrust density and thrust per copper losses. Further, we proposed a multi-objective optimization by genetic algorithm to search for the optimum parameters. The design optimization is verified by 2-D Finite Element analysis (FEA).

  • This paper presents a characteristic analysis method of a permanent magnet type transverse flux linear motor (TFLM) with spiral cores. The spiral cores are used as the mover cores in order to make 3-dimensional (3-D) magnetic flux paths at the TFLM which have 3-D magnetic flux flows. The 3-D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method is used to analyse the magnetic characteristics of the machine, and an imaginary part, 'flux barrier,' is introduced to consider the spiral core characteristic. Magnetic parameters such as flux, inductance, and thrust are calculated from the analysis results. The computed thrust forces are compared to measured values to confirm the accuracy of the analysis.

  • This paper describes an analysis method based on the experimental parameter for the 0.9kW starter motor of vehicle with permanent magnet and pole core, and analyzed the influence by the effect of pole core of starting motor by using the 2D-FEM analysis technique to reflect the structural characteristic of 3D. A starter motor consists mainly of armature, yoke and permanent magnet with the pole core. Additionally, there is different the axial length of each part. Therefore, the effective of analysis method is needed to improve the characteristic of it. This paper approached the 2D-FEM analysis estimated by the 3D-EMCN(Three Dimensional Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network) instead of the 3D-FEM analysis to minimize parameters. As a result, this paper is proposed the validity of 2D-FEM analysis and obtained reasonable results for improving a performance.

  • A prototype of solenoidal superconducting magnet using Bi-2223/Ag multi-filamentary tapes was fabricated and tested to investigate its performance. The Bi-2223/Ag tapes were prepared by powder-in-tube method. The dimensions of magnet, which was stacked with 9 double pancakes, were 90 mm in height, 74 mm in outer diameter and 40 mm in clear core. The axial maximum magnet field at the center of the solenoidal magnet was about 0.12 T, and the critical current of coil conductor was about 9 A at 77.3 K.

  • The detent force caused by the interaction of magnets with the teeth of a armature core deteriorates the driving performance of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor. In this paper, we analyze the fields and forces of a linear synchronous motor with segmented or skewed magnet arrangement according to lateral overhang length of permanent magnets. For the analysis, the 3-dimensional equivalent magnetic circuit network method is used. The detent force and the static thrust are analyzed according to the segmented or skewed angle and the overhang length of permanent magnets, and the optimal angles that the detent force is minimized are found out in each case. The analysis results are compared with the experimental ones and shown a reasonable agreement.

  • The cogging torque of a brushless dc (BLDC) motor results from the interaction between permanent magnets and iron core, and it causes noise and induce vibrations. During a manufacturing process, assembly tolerances lead to the change of the electromagnetic structure of a BLDC motor where permanent magnets are not properly glued to the surface of rotor core. In this paper, the effect of magnet separation from the surface of rotor core on the cogging torque is investigated due to assembly tolerance. The relationship with key design parameters is considered such as separation between magnets and rotor core, the number of magnets having separation, as well as the several types of arrangements among neighboring magnets. Finite element method (FEM) has been used to analyze a BLDC motor, and the allowable assembly tolerance is proposed to prevent generating noise and vibrations. Within proposed assembly tolerance, it is concluded that the cogging torque of a BLDC motor is decreased, and hence noise and vibrations.

  • This paper presented an optimum design of a perpendicular PMDSLSM (Permanent Magnet Double-sided Linear Synchronous Motor) to minimize the detent force. As an optimum method, the response surface method was used and 3D finite element method for the calculation. The design variables of the machine were the primary core width and thickness, and magnet width, thickness and length. Object functions were to minimize the detent force and maximize the thrust of the basic model. The results showed that the thrust force of the optimum design increased from 82.1N to 90.2N and detent force decreased from 15.2N to 2.8N, respectively, compared to the basic model.
