  • Field and temperature dependence of the critical current density, Jc, were measured for both un-doped and carbon doped $MgB_2/Nb/Monel$ wires manufactured by Hyper Tech Research, Inc. In particular, carbon incorporation into the $MgB_2$ structure using malic acid additive and a chemical solution method can be advantageous because of the highly uniform mixing between the carbon and boron powders. At 4.2 K and 10 T, Jc was estimated to be $25,000-25,300Acm^{-2}$ for the wire sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The irreversibility field, $B_{irr}$, of the malic acid doped wire was approximately 21.0 - 21.8 T, as obtained from a linear extrapolation of the J-B characteristic. Interestingly enough, the Jc of the malic acid doped sample exceeds $10^5Acm^{-2}$ at 6 T and 4.2 K, which is comparable to that of commercial Nb-Ti wires.

  • Magnesium diboride superconductor is still of considerable interest because of its appealing characteristics towards application mainly at around 20 K. Unlike Nb-based superconductors, $MgB_2$ can be operated by cryogen-free cooler which provides a cost effective alternative at low field of around 2-5 T. To explore this operating field region considerable efforts are necessary to marginally improve the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$. Under this situation, even the heat treatment environment during the synthesis is considered as an important factor. The addition of $H_2$ gas in small amount with Ar as a mixed gas during annealing has an adverse effect on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$. It is although interesting to find that the presence of Mg vapor along with hydrogen during heat treatment results in the appreciable improvement in the flux pinning and the overall response of the critical current density for the ex-situ $MgB_2$ samples.

  • Magnesium diboride ($MgB_2$) is an inexpensive and simple superconductor. This material was first synthesized and its structure confirmed in 1953 but its superconducting properties were not discovered until 2001 when they caused great excitement. In this study, superconducting $MgB_2$ thin films on the r-$Al_{2}O_3$ substrates have been grown by the combination of radio frequency magnetron sputtering of B and thermal evaporation of Mg. The deposition conditions were varied by changing deposition rate. Before the co-deposition of Mg and B, the deposition rates of each element have been measured separately. The $MgB_2$ layers had 400nm in thickness and superconducting transition temperatures have been measured around $\sim$38.6K. Superconducting properties have been measured by PPMS, XRD, and SEM.

  • [ $MgB_2$ ] thin films were fabricated using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) method on silicon substrates with buffers of alumina grown by using atomic layer deposition method. The growth war in a range of temperatures $500\;{\sim}\;600^{\circ}C$ and under the reactor pressures of $25\;{\sim}\;50\;Torr$. There are some interfacial reactions in the as-grown films with impurities of mostly $Mg_2Si$, $MgAl_2O_4$, and other phases. The $T_c$'s of $MgB_2$ films were observed to be as high as 39 K, but the transition widths were increased with growth temperatures. The magnetization was measured as a function of temperature down to the temperature of 5 K, but the complete Meissner effect was not observed, which shows that the granular nature of weak links is prevailing. The formation of mostly $Mg_2Si$ impurity in HPCVD process is discussed, considering the diffusion and reaction of Mg vapor with silicon substrates.
