  • Imwonshibyukji(1827) is an important and stupendous ancient scientific book, which is much like an encyclopedia, that can discern the dietary life of the latter period of Choseon. This article is assorted, which is mentioned in this book, as Cho(Misutkaru-in parched grain that is weed out into powder) to the main material of grain Youmicho, Wandoocho, Youcho, also the medicinal plant as the main material Youkhangcho, Backyupcho, Chungumcho, Unyoungcho, and Naecho, Haengcho, Eicho, Imgumcho, Joyou, Bokbunjacho, made by fruit. The results of inquiring the property by the assortment is as you see in the following. Youmicho, Wandoocho, Youcho, Youkhyangcho, Backyupcho, and Chungumcho, which consist of glutinous rice, nonclutinous rice, barley, buckwheat, pea, and black soybean are among 13 kinds of methods to make Cho. The manufacturing process is similar to that of Misutkaru, but in the case of Unyoungcho 6 different medicinal powders are mixed with Chundang and Sookmill to form a hard portable taffy substance, which is quite unique. Naecho, Haengcho, Eicho, Imgumcho, Joyou, and Bokbunjacho are extracted from pulp and processed in a powder form like Misutkaru, which can also be considered as a fruit tea. Youcho is unique in its sense, since it is fermented by maggots that are bred in order to obtain the juice. Cho is known to calm thirst and empty stomachs, and has various medicinal materials to act as food to aid virility. It is also known to have multiple functions as an alternative staple, refreshment to aid virility, portable food, and preferable beverage. There are ten references on Cho, 37% are Korean in Ongheejobji and 63% Chinese in Jaeminyosool, Bonchogangmok, Chungmoonbobang, Nongjungchunsuh, Wangshinongsuh, Shikgyung, Sukmyung, Bonchoseupyou, and Wisaengbogam. The citations are in the general introduction and 13 types of Cho are cited 19 times overall, but citations based on Chinese references are non existe.

  • Silver pompano (Trachinotus blochii) is one of the major commodities of the aquaculture industry in Lampung. Silver pompano hatchery activities that still require natural feed, namely Brachionus sp. Brachionus plicatilis is a filter feeder that does not filter selectively all available feed, so an enrichment process is required so that natural feed reproduces with high nutritional content and is high in fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and decosahexaenoic acid [DHA]). This study aims to determine the best survival and growth of silver pompano larvae by feeding B. plicatilis enriched with EPA and DHA fatty acids derived from maggots black soldier fly (BSF). Five-day-old silver pompano larvae with a density of 20 larvae/tank in a 20 × 20 × 20 cm aquarium container. B. plicatilis was fed at a density of 13 ind/mL. Nannochloropsis salina was also given as additional feed at 300-400 cells/mL density. We gave B. plicatilis three times a day (05:00 am, 02:00 pm, and 9.00 pm) for 30 days of cultivation. The experimental treatments were A (no enrichment), B (100 ppm), C (300 ppm), D (500 ppm), and E (700 ppm). The conclusion of this study is the provision of EPA and DHA oil from maggot BSF with different doses of rotifer enrichment has a significant effect on the growth of silver pompano larvae. The results showed that the optimal dose of EPA and DHA oil was 300 ppm or 0.3 mL/L in treatment C with an average absolute length growth of 2.11 cm, and the survival rate reached 75%.

  • Myiasis is a relatively common infection of animals kept as pets, although only 1 case of canine myiasis has been described so far in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we report an additional case of canine wound myiasis with identification of its causative agent, Lucilia sericata. An 8-year-old male Siberian husky dog was referred with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea to the Chungbuk National University Veterinary Medical Center, Cheongju-si (city), Chungcheongbuk-do (province), Korea in July 2013. Physical examination indicated the patient had a deep wound filled with a maggot swarm as a left gluteal lesion. A total of 216 maggots were removed by forceps, and the wounded area was sponged with gauzes and disinfected with 70% alcohol and a povidone-iodine solution. After daily care and suturing the wound, the patient was discharged at day 19 after admission. Recovered worms possessed morphological characteristics similar to those of L. sericata, namely, a sub-cylindrical body with 6-8 lobed anterior spiracles, round shaped with a button surrounded by a peritremal ring with no gaps, and similar distances between dorsal, median, and outer papillae of the 12th segment. Additionally, cox1 partial sequences (528 bp) obtained in the present study showed 100% identity with those of L. sericata (GenBank no. KT272854.1). L. sericata is indicated as a pathogen of myiasis infection not only in humans, but also in animals kept as pets in Korea.
