Community Structure and Vertical Distribution of Macrobenthos in the Mussel Bed on the Goijeong Rocky Shore in Jinhae (진해 괴정 암반 조간대 담치대의 대형저서동물 군집구조 및 수직분포)

  • The fauna associated with mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) beds and vertical distribution of macrobenthos were studied on the Goijeong rocky shore in Jinhae Bay, Korea. Sampling was conducted seasonally using a quadrate from January to October, 1998. In the first experiment, to reveal the community structure of macrobenthos in mussel bed, a total of 62 species $(10,690ind./m^2,\;3,802.1\;g/m^2)$ were identified, which included polychaetes $(32\;spp.,\;52.6\%),$ molluscs (16 spp.), crustaceans (10 spp.), and others. The density-dominant species were Pseudopolydora antennata, Nereis heterocirrata, Littorina brevicula and Balanus kondakovi. And the density of associated fauna was correlated with that of mussel (r=0.951, p=0.049). In the second experiment, to reveal the vertical distribution of macrobenthos on the rocky shore, ANOVA showed highly significant differences between the density of top 5 dominant species (Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula, Balanus kondakovi, Septifer virgatus and Granulilittorina exigua) and tidal levels (P=0.000). Vertical distribution of macrobnethos was characterized by Ghthamalus belt and Balanus-Septifer belt in the mussel bed.

  • Macrobenthos composes the dominant biomass at the mudflat and play an important role in the maintenance of the benthic environments. Organic matter in sedimentary environment affects habitat, feeding behaviors, and survival of benthos. In this study, the relationship between organic matter content in sediment and the distribution of macrobenthos was discussed at two margins (Mokpo and Aphae area) in the mouth of Muan bay. Sediment TOC was higher at Mokpo than at Aphae through the four seasons, and the pollution indicator organism Musculista senhousia was dominant in this area. The macrobenthos distribution was clearly divided into two areas correlated with sediment organic matter content in the mouth of Muan bay.

Species Composition and Community Structure of Macrobenthos during Fall on the Dokdo Coast, Korea (가을철 독도 연안에 출현하는 대형저서동물의 종 조성 및 군집 구조)

  • The Dokdo coast is known for its high biodiversity. However, few studies have examined the biodiversity and macrobenthic community on the subtidal soft-bottom. Therefore, we collected macrobenthos (> 1 mm) using a Smith-McIntyre grab ($0.1m^2$) at 15 stations along the Dokdo coast in September 2016. The sediments consisted of badly sorted (1.7) coarse sand with gravel and the mean sediment grain size was $-0.4{\phi}$. In total, 177 macrobenthic species were collected; their mean density was $1,566ind./m^2$. The number of species and density of macrobenthic fauna decreased significantly with the mean grain size. The dominant species were the amphipods Melita denticulata (16.5%) and Melita shimizui (5.5%), polychaete Salvatoria clavata (5.4%), bivalve Glycymeris aspersa (4.4%), and ophiuroid Ophionereis dubia (4.3%). The dominant macrobenthos species on the subtidal soft-bottom differed from the coastal areas of the East Sea, suggesting that the difference in the sediment grain size affected the macrobenthos. Cluster analysis was performed to divide the study area into four groups, and environmental factors which correlated with species composition and distribution in the study area were the combination of the four parameters of salinity, dissolved oxygen, total organic carbon and depth. A future seasonal investigation is needed to understand the species composition and characteristics of the Dokdo macrobenthos.

Macrozoobenthic Communities of the Deep Sea Sediments in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean (북동태평양 심해저 퇴적물에 서식하는 대형저서동물의 군집)

  • Macrobenthos were collected at 7 stations located from $5^{\circ}N$ to $10^{\circ}N$ with 1o interval along the longitude of $131^{\circ}W$ using a box corer with sampling area of $0.25\;m^2$ in July, 1999. In order to see the vertical distribution of macrobenthos in sediments, each subcore sample was divided into 5 layers with 1 cm interval up to 6 cm depth. Each subcore sample was sieved through 0.3 mm mesh screen and fixed with 10% Rose Bengal added formalin. A total of 22 faunal groups in 11 phyla were sampled and the average density was $959\;{\pm}\;584\;ind./m^2$. Foraminiferans comprised 34.8% of total specimens were the most abundant fauna, and followed by nematodes (27.5%), polychaete worms (15.7%), and benthic harpactoid copepods (10.4%). A latitudinal trend was shown in the distribution of macrobenthos; the maximum density of $1,832\;ind./m^2$ appeared at station N06 and the most poverished community occurred at station N09 with the density of $248\;ind./m^2$. The density of typical macrofaunal taxa except foraminiferans and nematods was $116\;ind./m^2$. In the vertical distribution of macrobenthos, more than 70% of macrobenthos occurred in the upper 2 cm layer, and upper 4 cm layer contained about 90% of macrofauna. Polychaete worms consisted of 22 families, and cirratulid and paraonid worms were dominant polychaete species. The prominant feeding guilds of polychaete worms were SDT (surface, descretely motile, tenaculate feeding) and SMX (surface, motile, non-jawed); they comprised more than 50% of polychaete abundance. These feeding guilds of polychaete worms suggests that the deep sea benthos should be well adapted the newly settled deposits from water column, but this should be clarified by the further studies.

Spatial Characteristics of the Macrobenthos Community Near the Nakdong River Estuary, on the Southeast Coast of Korea (낙동강 하구역 주변 대형저서동물 군집의 공간 특성)

  • Macrobeilthic fauna were collected using a van Veen grab $(0.1m^2)$ to investigate the spatial characteristics of the macrobenthos community at 28 stations near the Nakdong River estuary, Southeast Korea, in September 2001. A total of 203 species were sampled with a mean density of $1,554 ind./m^2$ and a biomass of $252.3 gWWt/m^2$. Annelids were the dominant faunal group in terms of species and density, with 68 species and a mean density of $1,031ind./m^2$, which comprised 33.5% and 66.3% of the total benthic animals, respectively. Based on density, three Polychaetes were dominant Tharyx sp· $(420ind./m^2)$, Lumbrineris longifolia $(143ind./m^2)$, and Sternaspis scutata $(118ind./m^2)$, along with a bivalve Theora fragilis $(129 ind./m^2)$. On cluster analysis, the benthic community was classified into four groups based on the species composition: Group-1 occurred in disturbed areas, Group-II in coastal regions, Group-III in central mariculture grounds, and Group-IV offshore. Environmental factors (mean gain size, organic carbon, and depth) were primarily correlated with the macrobenthos community structure. A benthic pollution assessment based on the macrobenthos community structure showed that Group-I and Group-II were located in a coastal area that had been severely disturbed by construction of Busan new port and various pollutants, Group-III was gradually polluted, while offshore Group-IV was the most stable.

  • Community structure of macrobenthos was studied on Angol clam farming ground of Chinhae Bay in the southern coast of Korea. Macrobenthos samples were collected monthly using a quadrate at each station from March 1998. Macrobenthos samples were seived by 1.0mm mesh seive. Mean grain size was 0.267 mm. A total of 111 macrobenthos species were sampled with a mean density of 1,651ind/m$^2$and biomass of 1466.7wwt.g/m$^2$. Annelida was density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of 818ind/m$^2$, comprising of 49.6% of the total density of the macrobenthos. It was followed by Mollusca with 660ind/m$^2$(40.0%). Mollusca was biomass-dominant faunal group. Major dominant species in the number of individual were Ruditapes philippinarum (375ind/m$^2$), Batillaria cumingi (208ind/m$^2$), Cirrformia tentaculata (167ind/m$^2$), Ceratonereis erithraeensis (151ind/m$^2$), Capitella capitata (111ind/m$^2$) and Sigambra tentaculata (91ind/m$^2$). Major dominant species in the biomass were Ruditapes philippinarum (1156.6wwt.g/m$^2$), Batillaria cumingi (111.0wwt.g/m$^2$) and Cyclina sinenis (106.2wwt.g/m$^2$). The species diversity was increased gradually during the study period. Increasing of species diversity was due to not only increasing of number of species but also decreasing of dominance of some polycheates. Contents of silt-clay was increased gradually in the intertidal zone.

Rock type difference and Benthic Community Structures in the coast of Jeju, Korea (한국 제주 연안의 암반 형태 차이와 저서생물 군집구조)

  • Effects of substrate types (bedrock and boulder habitat) on the community structures of benthic biota (macroalgae, macrobenthos) were monthly examined at Sinheung in Jeju Island, Korea, from Feb. to Nov. 2015. Species diversity of seaweeds and macrobenthos was greater at bedrock sites with 57 and 102 species than at boulder sites having 42 seaweeds and 67 macrobenthos. Average annual biomass of seaweeds was $1,601.13g\;wet\;wt./m^2$ at bedrock site and $448.85g\;wet\;wt./m^2$ at boulder site. Ecklonia cava was the most dominant species, occupying 62.64% ($1,002.93g/m^2$)of total biomass at bedrock. Amphiroa anceps was the most dominant species and subdominant species was Ecklonia cava, Grateloupia angusta, Peyssonnelia capensis and Meristotheca papulosa at boulder site. Density and biomass of macrobenthos were estimated to be $106.9indivi./m^2$ and $871.93g/m^2$, respectively at bedrock site and they were $64.6indivi./m^2$ and $984.28g/m^2$ at boulder site. The dominant macrobenthos species based on biomass were Turbo comutus (36.40%), Astralium haematragum (19.18%) and Anthocidaria crassispina (13.61%) at bedrock site and they were Alveopora japonica (54.13%) and Psammocora profundacella (24.28%) at boulder site.

Distributional Pattern of Macrobenthic Invertebrates on the Shallow Subtidal Sandy Bottoms near Kangrung, East Coast of Korea (동해 강릉 연안의 사질 퇴적물에 서식하는 대형 저서무척추동물의 분포양상)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution pattern of macrobenthos in the subtidal sandy bottoms of the east coast of Korea, and seasonal samplings were performed from April 1993 to February 1994. The species number of macrobenthos was in the range from 70 in winter to 109 in spring season. Polychaete worms were the most dominant faunal group in species richness and abundance, but mollusks showed the highest biomass. The mean density of macrobenthos fluctuated from 631 individuals/m$^2$ in autumn to 1,995 individuals/m$^2$ in summer. The major macrofauna in abundance were polychaetes, Spiophanes bombyx which occurred all seasons with top rank and Prionospio sp. and a mollusk, Alvenius ojianus, and crustaceans, Wecomedon sp. and Urothoidae spp. were also numerically dominant macrobenthic fauna. The macrobenthos in the study area were classified into two assemblages by water depth. However, they showed a different community structure near small rivers in autumn and winter seasons.

Spatial Distribution and Community Structure of Macrobenthos on the Sandy Shore of Anmyeondo, Korea (안면도 사질 조간대에 서식하는 대형저서동물의 공간분포 및 군집구조)

  • The western coast of Anmyeondo is open toward the Yellow sea and the northern and southern coasts are sandy and have simple coastlines. In this study, we investigated the spatial distribution and community structure of the macrobenthos that inhabit the sandy shore of Anmyeondo. For the study, we chose 8 sites encompassing 44 stations. In total, we have recorded 62 species, and collected 747 inds./$m^2$ on average. Zonation pattern did not appear because the mean grain size and organic contents of the study sites were similar among the macrobenthos. Polychaetes were most frequently recorded, but amphipods appeared in higher mean density. Macrobenthic community is classified into 3 groups largely based on the density difference among the dominant species and the groups were not influenced by environmental factors. The aggregated distribution of macrobenthos did not show a clear regional spatial difference but exhibited classification pattern emphasizing the density difference of the dominant species. The sandy shores of Anmyeondo are relatively more influenced by waves compared to other regions and the sediment moves more due to strong winds, etc. at low tide. We presume that the movement of sediment resulted in a relatively even sedimentary environment and consequently weakened environmental variables that change with the tide level. We concluded that the macrobenthic community does not show the zonation pattern in the sandy shores of Anmyeondo due to such influences.

Spatial Species Diversity of Macrobenthos in the Intertidal Zone of Hwasoon, Jeju Islands (화순 조간대 저서 대형무척추동물의 공간적 종다양성에 관한 연구)

  • The distribution and seasonal changes of the intertidal macrobenthos community was performed on five intertidal rocky stations of Hwasoon at Jeju Islands September 1999 to August 2000. The macrobenthos was composed of six phyla, 13 classes, 24 orders, 49 families, and 97 species. The dominant species of the upper zones were Nodilittorina exigua, Notoacmea schrenckii, Liolophura japonica and Patelloida saccharina. Those of the middle zones were Monodonta labio, Chthamalus challengeri, Siphonalia japonica and Liolophura japonica. Those of the lower zones were Siphonalia sirius, Patelloida saccharina, Chthamalus challengeri, and Liolophura japonica. The community dominance indices of the upper zones were much higher than those of the middle and lower zones. Species diversity and evenness in all investigated zones were highest in station 1 and lowest in staton 3. But, species richness was highest in station 1 and lowest in station 4.
