  • Statement of problem : There have been previous studies about considerable variations in machining accuracy and consistency in the implant-abutment-screw interfaces. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the machining accuracy and consistency of implant/abutment/screw combinations on two randomly selected implants from each of four manufactures. Material and methods : In this study, screws were respectively used to secure a cemented abutment, to a hexlock implant fixture ; teflon coated titanium alloy screw(Torq-Tite) and titanium alloy screw in Steri--Oss system, gold-plated gold-palladium alloy screw(Gold-Tite) and titanium alloy screw in 3i system gild screw ana titanium screw in AVANA Dental Implant system, and titanium screws in Paragon System. The implants were perpendicularly mounted in polymethyl methacrylate autopolymerizing acrylic resin block(Orthodontic resin, Densply International Inc. USA) by use of dental surveyer. Each abutment screw was secured to the implant with recommended torque value using a digital torque controller. Each screw was again tightened after 10 minutes. All samples were cross sectioned with grinder-polisher unit(Omnilap 2000 SBT Inc) after embeded in liquid unsaturated polyester (Epovia, Cray Valley Inc) Results : There were the largest gaps in the neck areas of screws in hexagonal extension implants which were examined in this study. The leading edge of the abutment screw thread (superior surface) was in contact with the implant body thread, and the majority of the contacting surfaces were localized to the middle portion of the mating threads. Considerable variation in the contacting surfaces was noted in the samples evaluated. Amounts of contact in the abutment screw thread were larger for assemblies with Gold-Tite screw, gold alloy screw. Torq-Tite screw than those with titanium screws. The findings of intimate contact between the screw and screw seat were seen in all samples, regardless of manufacturers. However, microgap between the head and lateral neck surface of the screw and the abutment could be dectected in all samples. The findings of intimate contact between the platform of the implant and the bottom of the abutment were consistent in all samples, regardless of manufacturers. However, microgaps between the lateral surface of external hex of the fixture and the abutment could be dectected in all samples. Conclusion : Considerable variations in machining accuracy and consistency were noted in the samples and the implant-abutment-screw interfaces were incomplete. From the results of this study, further development of the system will be required, including improvements in pattern design.

  • As the digital TV markets rapidly growing, many manufacturers introduce large size flat screen TV units. There are two different display types available to large size models which are plasma and TFT-LCD. Since both are constructed with thin large panels that are mostly fragile to even moderate mechanical shock inputs. Some large size panels are severely resonated by the acoustic sound generated TV which deteriorates video quality. Recognizing the potential problems of large displays, accurate measurement of the panels is to be an essential task for the reliable design. Measurement of mechanical properties of a thin large crystallized panel such as TFT-LCD display with traditional material testing equipments is challenging. Since TFT-LCDs are constructed with combination of brittle glass panels, polymer sheets, and liquid crystal, their properties are not only anisotropic but also usually non-linear. Accurate measurement of the properties often requires very expensive facilities. Especially when the size of the test sample is as large as 40-inch or wider, direct measurement cost is prohibitive. Even worse, machining of the large TFT-LCD to make a smaller size specimen that could be fit into a material tester is not possible because of liquid crystal leakage. A new method fer the measurement of elastic modulus of large TFT-LCD panel is presented in this article. The suggested method provides a simple, economic, and user-friendly way fer measuring the elastic modulus of large panels with considerable level of accuracy.

  • In order to meet the increasing competitive pressures coupled with higher demands for component quality, whirling machines have been at the cutting edge of the automobile industry for more than 25 years. The hard whirling process can save on machining time and operation elimination. Hard whirling is done dry, without coolant. The chips carry away nearly all of the heat during cutting, leaving the workpiece cool and minimizing any thermal geometry variations. The surface finish and profile accuracy are close to grinding quality. Whirling machines usually consist of four major parts; 1) loading system that requires the necessary axial speeds, 2) head stock that needs high precision clamping and positioning system at the chuck and tailstock, 3) whirling unit that demands the high cutting speeds and cutting power fer cutting deep thread profiles and 4) unloading system that requires an easy workpiece unloading. Also, capabilities of the whirling machine can be improved by attaching a vision system to the machine. Most of whirling machines in Korean automobile industry are imported from the Leistritz company, Germany and the Hasegawa company, Japan. Tn this paper, a basic research will be performed to improve and enhance the existing whirling machines. Finally, a new Korean whirling machine will be proposed and developed.

  • There have been strong demands for micro size screw with high precision due to miniaturization and integration trends for electronic products such as Hard Disk Drives. The thread rolling process for screw manufacturing are lower unit cost, reduced material utilization, and superior mechanical properties compared to the machining process. But little work has been done on the thread rolling of micro size screw. In this paper, we investigate thread rolling process using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and parameter study for screw manufacturing. And we also carried out compression tests to obtain the material property and to implement into the FE tool for the numerical simulation. In case that parameter of relative position oldies is half length of pitch for maintaining the continuous thread profiles, we found that shear friction factor was 0.9 during the thread rolling process using FEA. We are trying to develop the thread rolling process using the FE-simulation to manufacture screws which have been commonly produced from the industrial level fabrication at present.

  • With a rapid development in the area of micro and ultra precision technology, the micro surface machining of small size parts are explosively increased. Especially, to improve efficiency of various beams in lens and reflector, non-rotational symmetric form and several mm level heights changeable surface can be machined at a time. These geometric complex 3D surface cannot be machined by general short stroke FTS. The long stroke FTS if firmly needed to move directly several mm and have nm level positioning accuracy for the complex surface form. The long stroke FTS used linear motors to drive moving unit long and fine, aero static bearings to decrease friction and moving errors in guide way, optical linear scale with nm level resolution to measure position of FTS. Furthermore, to increase the performance of acceleration of FTS, the light material, such as AL is used for the structure and the high stiffness box type structure is selected. In this paper, the genetic algorithm approach is described to determine a set of design parameters for auto tuning. The authors have attempted to model the design problem with the objective of minimizing the error, such as variable pattern change. This method can give the better alternative than existing other method.

  • Micro prism pattern is applying in order to get increase of luminance, control the light, and so forth especially in optics and display industry. Most patterns are fabricated by lithography, planning, and EDM, but they have limitations on the productivity or the unit cost of produce. However, ultra precision mold is one of the processes able to replace it, and assure high productivity required by industries. In this investigation, micro prismatic end-milling is suggested in order to fabricate the pattern effectively. Micro prism pattern having $100{\mu}m$ of pitch and height was machined on STD-11. After machining, the flank and boundary wear on micro end mill were measured and analyzed, as well as burr formation and dimensional accuracy of fabricated pattern were evaluated. Thus the optimal cutting conditions were derived.

  • The rotation of a spindle unit must be accurate for high-quality machining and to improve the quality of the machine tools. Therefore, the proper measurement of the rotation accuracy and ensuring a proper analysis are very important. Separate processes are necessary because spindle errors and roundness errors associated with the test balls can both factor into the measured rotation error values. We used three methods to discern test ball errors and analyzed which could be deemed as the most proper technique in a test of the rotation accuracy of the main spindle of a machine tool.

  • Due to material-specific vulnerabilities, the surfaces of the liquid crystal glasses used in mobile phones can crack easily, with even the smallest cracks undergoing propagation. To protect the glass surfaces, films are attached to the surfaces during the mobile phone production process. However, after machining the liquid crystal, removal of the film on the liquid crystal surface using chemical and mechanical methods is required. In this research, a peeling apparatus was developed for removing the films attached to liquid crystal surfaces during the production process. Mechanical attachment and design automation through experimentation and finite element modelling were performed to confirm the validity of the design.

  • Thermally induced errors have been significant factors affecting the machine tool accuracy. In this paper, the spindle thermal error has been focused, where the 5 degree of freedom thermal error components are considered. An effective measurement system has been devised for the 5 DOF thermal errors, consisting of gap sensors and thermocouples around the micro-computer interfaced environment. Several thermal error modeling techniques are also implemented for the thermal error prediction: multiple linear regression, neural network and system identification methods, etc. The performance of the thermal error modeling techniques is evaluated and compared, giving the system identification method as the optimum model having the least deviation. The developed system for the thermal error measurement and modeling was practically applied to a CNC machining center, and the spindle thermal errors were effectively compensated around the micro computer-machine tool interfaced networks. The machine tool accuracy was improved about 4-5 times typically.

  • The recent power add-on drive wheelchairs (PADWs) provide greater physical activity, are easier to transport, and may be an excellent alternative for the typical manual or electric wheelchairs. The development of in-wheel motor for a PADW is the principal issues. In this paper, design, implementation, and testing of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for a PADW are presented. To design output power and torque of the motor, the equation of motion has been investigated. The design parameters were calculated and the dimension and shape of the motor which was limited by the In-wheel mechanism of the PADW were done by applying FEM and optimal design technique. The prototype of the motor mentioned above was fabricated with precise machining and assembling. Then the motor tested on dynamometer and the measured results of the motor were verified by comparing the design results. The fabricated motor was 80 mm in length with a diameter of 110 mm and small enough to be attached the driving unit of the PADW.
