  • Carbon fiber epoxy composite are widely used in airframe structures, space vehicles, sports equipment, and high speed reciprocating parts for industrial machinery. In this paper, the groove processing characteristics of carbon fiber epoxy com-posite was experimentally investigated in order to study the endmill operation of fiber reinforce epoxy composites. Followings are main finding from the experimental results. First, the cutting and bending force in groove processing of the carbon fiber epoxy composite increased as the spindle speed deceased. They also deceased as the table feed increased. Second, the good cutting status obtained at the entrance of groove while delamination occurred at the exit of groove, Third, the regular high speed steel endmill was not efficient, thus the new endmill such as coated carbide rooter endmill or dia-mode endmill should be used for the effective endmll operation of carbon filber epoxy composites.

  • Drilling is one of the most important operations performed in the machining industry. And the material of the workpiece has a profound effect on the tool life, the surface finish produced and the overall economy of the process. Hot-rolled high strength steels have been used for automobile structural material, owing to high hardness and machinability of the material. However, in the drilling of hot-rolled high strength steels, the current knowledge of tool wear and machinability are insuf-ficient. There, it is desirable to monitor drill wear status and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include the drilling thrust, torque and drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments con-ducted on the workpiece. Also drill were is measured by acoustic emission system and computer vision system.

  • An industrial robot noise has various noise sources such as gears, motors, bearings, and controller fans. Among these, gears are the most dominant source for noise. The gear noise, caused by tooth profile, elastic deformation, machining error and wear, is directly correlated with the transmission error of mating gear. Due to the fact that has several axis and many gears, it is difficult to understand the characteristics of the vibration and noise of robots. (omitted)

  • This paper deals with the study on the culling characteristics in ball-end milling process. First of all, the effects of the geometric cutting conditions such as the spindle speed, feedrates on the surface integrity and machining stability were evaluated by the analytical and the experimental approaches. A large amount of experimental sets are performed to evaluate the effects of chatter phenomenon on the machined surface. The optical microscope and the surface roughness measuring machine are used to measure the surface integrity and roughness of the machined surfaces.

  • Electrospun meshed poly-caprolactone PCL was patterned by femtosecond laser with linear grooves. As parametric variables, focus spot size, pulse energy, and scanning speed were varied to determine the affects on groove size and the characteristics of the electrospun fiber at the edges of these grooves. The femtosecond laser was seen to be an effective means for flexibly structuring the surface of ES PCL scaffolds and the width of the ablated grooves was well controlled by laser energy and focus spot size. The ablation threshold was measured to be $14.9J/cm^2$ which is a little higher than other polymers. These affects were attributed to optical multiple reflections inside nano-fibers. By the laser-induced plasma at higher pulse energies, some melting of fibers was observed.

  • The EDM characteristics of STD11 steel with copper and graphite as electrode have been investigated by using Hansvedt SE-155B electro-discharge machine. The effects of parameters such as duty factor and frequency on electro-discharge machining were discussed. It was found that those parameters have significant influences on the relative electrode wear(REW), metal removalrate(MRR) surface integrity. When the duty factor was increased under the constant frequency of 2 KHz, the MRR was also increased and the REW was decreased. But REW was constant with higher duty factor of 50%. In the case of the smaller duty factor and the higher frequency, the surface roughness has become better. When the graphite was used as electrode at thes same condition, the tool electrode built-up phenomenon has been obsdrved.

  • The focus of this study is the development of a credible fault detection system of the cylindrical plunge grinding process. The acoustic emission (AE) signals generated during machining were analyzed to determine the relationship between grinding-related faults and characteristics of changes in signals. Furthermore, a neural network, which has excellent ability in pattern classification, was applied to the diagnosis system. The neural network was optimized with a momentum coefficient, a learning rate, and a structure of the hidden layer in the iterative learning process. The success rates of fault detection were verified.

  • Because of the development in mold industries, the geometrical form accuracy of the milled surface is getting more and more important. It has been known that the geometrical form accuracy is affected by machine conditions, cutting conditions, tool conditions and tool path and so on. Among them, the tool approaching path causes the change in material removal per tooth at the end of each machining cycle. And, this change generates the geometrical form error around the region where the tool engages the workpiece initially. So, it is impossible to eliminate the geometrical error caused by the tool approaching path. Thus, characteristics of this geometrical error are studied analytically and experimentally to minimize this region.

  • An experimental study on drilling of stainless steel is conducted using TiAlN coated drills and HSS twist drills with several cutting conditions; feed rate, spindle rotational speed, and dry/wet cutting. The effects of number of hole on the thrust force are examined by cutting force measurement. The flank wear of the drills and the change of hole diameter are quantitatively observed using a vision system. It is found that the thrust force in drilling with TiAlN coated drills decrease under dry and wet machining, whereas the flank wear resistance is improved.

  • FIB has been commonly used as a very powerful tool in the semiconductor industry. It is mainly used for mask repair, device correction, failure analysis and IC error correction, etc. Currently, FIB is not being applied to the fabrication of the micro and nano-structured mold, because of low productivity. And also sputtering rate has been required to fabricate 3D shape. In the paper, we studied the FIB-Sputtering rate according to mold materials. And surface roughness characteristics had been analysed for micro or nano mold fabrication. Si wafer, Glassy Carbon, STAVAX and DLC that have been normally considered as good micro or nano mold materials were used in the study.
