Building a Machining Knowledge Base for Intelligent Machine Tools (지능공작기계를 위한 가공 지식의 지식베이스 구성 및 운영)

  • Intelligent machines respond to external environments on the basis of decisions that are made by sensing the changes in the environment and analyzing the obtained information. This study focuses on the construction of a knowledge base which enables decision making with that information. Approximately 70% of all errors that occur in machine tools are caused by thermal error. In order to proactive deal with these errors, a system which measures the temperature of each part and predicts and compensates the displacement of each axis has been developed. The system was built in an open type controller to enable machine tools to measure temperature changes and compensate the displacement. The construction of a machining knowledge base is important for the implementation of intelligent machine tools, and is expected to be applicable to the network based intelligent machine tools which look set to appear sooner or later.

  • We present a framework of an intelligent design support system for embodiment design of machine tools which can support efficiently and systematically the machine design by utilizing design knowledge such as objects(part), know-how, public, evaluation, and procedures. The design knowledge of machining center has been accumulated through interview with design experts of machine tool companies. The processes of embodiment design of machining center are established. We also introduce a hybrid knowledge representation so that the systm can easily deal with various and complicated design knowledge. The intelligent design system is being developed on the basis of object-oriented programming, and all parts of a design object, machining center, are also classified by the object-oriented modeling. For the demonstration of effectiveness of the suggested system, a structural design system for machine tools is implemented.

  • Grinding is considered as a very effective machining technology to attain high production rates and a good surface quality of hard and brittle components. However, the grinding operations till needs the skill and the experience of an operator because of a lack of scientific knowledge and engineering principles. This is the reason why grinding operations are not completley intergrated in CIMS(Computer Intergrated Manufacturing System. Recent develop- ment focus on expert system which deals with domain specific knowledge in order to solve this problem. Firstly, in this study, a basic strategy to develop the grinding knowledge-base for grinding is discussed. Next, the architecture of knowledge-base and management of the grinding knowledge-base(GKB) is described.

  • An expert system for NC part programming of NC lathe (ESPP-1) is developed as a part of Computer-Adied Manufacturing system. Conventional computer-assisted part programming system essentially requires an NC part programmer who is an expert in NC part programming. But the developed ESSP-1 can allow an inexperienced person to make an excellent NC data for the NC Lathe without any problem, since the system has a knowledge base composed of EIA and ISO NC code, feed rate, spindle speed, machining coordinates selection, and tool selection etc., which were directly evoked from some skilled NC part programmers, and referenced some machining handbooks. This paper discusses the algorithm of the expert system for NC part programming of the NC lathe (ESPP-1) and the performance comparisons between the developed expert system and the conventional system.

An Expert System of Moulding Working for Air Intake Hose Products using 3-Dimensional Parametric Modeling Technique

  • This paper deals with an application on the mould machining of air intake hose product by using 3-dimensional parametric modeling techniques. The detailed domain is the 3-dimensional product with similar shapes and different sizes which needs too much working time for preparation of modeling or machining due to making a trial and errors repeatedly. Decision making rules for selection of modeling order and technique, and for calculation of cutting conditions, and for determination of sequence and method concerning machining operations are required by interview of expert engineers in the field. The developed expert system of modeling and machining is programmed by using a user programming language under the CAD/CAM software of the Personal Designer. The developed system that aids a mould engineer who is working in the modeling and machining section which deal with air intake hose product provides strong and useful capabilities.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a CAD/CAM system for generation of designing and manufacturing information such as total drawing sub-assembly drawing, part drawing detail drawing part list and NC data for machining by CNC lathe were CUT machining center. Through this study the CAD/CAM system for deep drawing transfer die in mechanical press process has been developed The developed CAD system can generate the drawings of transfer die in mechanical press. Using these results from CAD system. it can generate NC data to machine die's elements on the CAD system. This system can reduce design man-hours and human errors. In order to construct the system it is used to automate the design process using knowledge base system. The developed system is based on the knowledge base system which is involved a lot of expert's empirical knowhow in the practice field. Using AutoLISp language under the Auto CAD system. CTK customer language of SmartCAM is used as the overall CAD/CAM environment. Results of this system will be provide effective aids to the designer and manufacturer in this field

  • Recectly, development of expert system utilizing the domain specific knowledge focuses upon the machining operations. This paper describes an expert system for selecting the optimum grinding wheel based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Fuzzy Logic. Knowledge-base, in this system, for selecting of grinding wheel is designed to appling the knowhow and experience knowledge of skilled hands. In this paper, firstly determination method of fuzzy membership function utilizing the qualitative knowledge, and then selection of the optimum wheel from among the available components according to Saaty's priority rule are described. Lastly,some implementation results are suggested.

  • In determining optimal cutting condition for face milling operation, tool wear is an important factor. For the purpose of establishing the relationship between various machining factors and tool wear, cutting tests have been performed. As a result, hardness and chemical composition of workpiece material, chemical composition and grain size of cutting tool and cutting speed have been selected as machining factors. In addition, relationship between feed rate and workpiece hardness has been observed. Prior to utilizing cutting conditions recommended by ‘Machining Data Handbook(MDH)’ as a knowledge base, an analysis for the validity of the MDH has been provided. Based on this analysis, tool life criteria applied by MDH has been modified. Finally, using MDH recommended data for neural network trainning, the results from the trained neural network for optimal cutting condition for some given workpiece and cutting tool can be used as reference cutting conditions.

  • The proposal of this paper is the constructing of knowledge database with manufacturing information. This database contains characteristics of workpiece materials, cutting tools, NC machines, manufacturing processes, and work conditions. And all shape in the system are feature models such base plate, step, hole, pocket, boss, and slot. These information generate a final decision for machining process by the expert system.
