To maximize the productivity in machining molds and dies, machine tools should operate at high speeds. During the high speed operation of moving frames or spindles, vibration problems are apt to occur if the machine tool structures are made of conventional steel materials with inferior damping characteristics. However, self-excited vibration or chatter is bound to occur during high speed machining when cutting speed exceeds the stability limit of machine tool. Chatter is undesirable because of its adverse effect on surface finish, machining accuracy, and tool life. Furthermore, chatter is a major cause of reducing production rate because, if no remedy can be found, metal removal rates have to be lowered until vibration-free performances is obtained. Also, the resonant vibration of machine tools frequently occurs when operating frequency approaches one of their natural frequencies because machine tools have several natural frequencies due to their many continuous structural elements. However, these vibration problems are closely related to damping characteristics of machine tool structures. The polymer concrete has high potential for machine tool bed due to its good damping characteristics with moderate stiffness. This paper presents the use of polymer concrete and sandwich structures to overcome vibration problems. Also, co-cure bonding method for functional part mounting was exhibited experimentally, by which manufacturing time and cost for polymer concrete bed will be remarkably reduced.
In this paper, the portable game machine called W"alking Beat" is designed and implemented not only to propose the new possibilities for the peripheral equipment market of portable acoustic machine but also to overcome the limitation of the acoustic simulation game machine such as the existing Beat Mania. The old game machine can be used only in a particular place, where it is installed. However, in order to get over the constraint on this space problem "Walking Beat Game Machine" is designed to facilitate the portability. In addition, the frequency analysis method using FFT algorithm is employed by regarding the music data for the portable digital acoustic machine as source so that the limitation that the existing game machine depends heavily on the previously registered game contents can be overcome. By making it possible to play games for all the music and putting an emphasis on multimedia trend only to listen to the music, it is speculated that it can contribute to the development of the new culture in the near future.
Recently, the deburring process which is last process of manufacture is one of the important process for complete product. The manual deburring process can cause not only higher error rate but also irregular shape and quality of product. Therefore, Shape Guided Automatic Deburring Machine has been developed to resolve the above problems. But the Shape Guided Automatic Deburring Machine have been applied only to produce a circular product. Therefore, this machine is difficult to apply to products of various shapes. To solve this problem, we would like to develop Generalized Shape Guided Automatic Deburring Machine applicable to various shapes. To this end, we have done the modeling and design using CATIA program and have performed machine simulation.

The rapid industrial growth, the consequent shortage of farm labour and increase in their wage level have facilitated more capitalized agricultural mechanization pattern in Korea. The efficiency of capital intensive machine is highly dependent on farm land structure. This paper describes a model explaining the relationship between farmland structure and required inputs for machine operation and to estimate required inputs for machine operation on the national basis for Korea for its paddy production system. The machine cost is closely related to operation area, but the required labour-hours are more related to machine type adopted . From the technology introduction point of view, if capital intensive machine is introduced, less labour-hours are required but machine kW-hours increase rapidly. From the plot geometry point of view, on good geometry plots, machine kW-hour and labour-hour required are less than that on the poor geometry plots. The kW-jhour per hectare of mechani al energy input id better indicator of mechanization level than kW per hectare or number of machine. If the adopted technology is more capital intensive and plot geometry is good, the cost reduction effect is highly significant.
Job shop manufacturing environments are using the concept of cellular manufacturing systems(CMS) which has several advantages in reducing production lead times, setup times, work-in-process, etc. Utilizing the similarities between cell-machine, part-machine, and the shape/size of parts, CMS can group machines and parts resulting in improved efficiency of this system. However, when grouping machines and parts in machine cells, there inevitably occurs exceptional elements(EEs), which can not operate in the same machine cell. Minimizing these EEs in CMS is a critical point that improving production efficiency. Constraints in machine duplication cost, machining process technology, machining capability, and factory space limitations are main problems that prevent achiving the goal of maintaining an ideal CMS environment. This paper presents an algorithm that minimizes EEs under the constraints of machine duplication cost and factory space limitation. Developing exceptional operation similarity(EOS) by cell-machine incidence matrix and part-machine incidence matrix, it brings the machine cells that operate the parts or not. A mathematical model to minimize machine duplication is developed by EOS, followed by a heuristic algorithm in order to reflect dynamic situation resulting from minimizing exceptional elements process and the mathematical model. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithm.
In this paper an effective two-phase approach adopting modified p-median mathematical model is proposed for grouping machines and parts in cellular manufacturing(CM). Unlike the conventional methods allowing machines and parts to be improperly assigned to cells and families, the proposed approach seeks to find the proper block diagonal solution where all the machines and parts are properly assigned to their most associated cells and families in term of the actual machine processing and part moves. Phase 1 uses the modified p-median formulation adopting new inter-machine similarity coefficient based on the non-binary production data-based part-machine incidence matrix(PMIM) that reflects both the operation sequences and production volumes for the parts to find machine cells. Phase 2 apollos iterative reassignment procedure to minimize inter-cell part moves and maximize within-cell machine utilization by reassigning improperly assigned machines and parts to their most associated cells and families. Computational experience with the data sets available on literature shows the proposed approach yields good-quality proper block diagonal solution.
To evaluate the dynamic characteristics of machine tool system, the system is modelled as a closed-loop system composed of cutting process and improved machine tool structures. The proposed machine tool structure model is constructed in consideration of energy transfer through the system. A new methodology to identify the machine tool dynamics by adopting impulse response and impulse cutting techniques is also proposed. It is shown that the methodology is successfully applied to a machine tool system to identify its dynamic characteristics employing the improved model.
Reconfigurability of machine tools is one of the critical factors to realize the responsive manufacturing systems to satisfy the mass-customization production. This paper presents the methods to model and simulate the machine tools on Internet in response to change in the machining requirements. Specifically, a set of module combination rules and a modeling method of the structure of machine tools using connectivity graph are developed. In response to the user requirements, kinematic relations and structures of machine tools can be derived using the module combination rules and connectivity graph relationships. Internet-based simulator of machine tools is implemented and presented. The developed machine tool simulator can be used to verify the structure of machine tools derived from the user requirements.
Thermal deformation of machine origin of machine tools due to internal and external heat sources has been the most important problem to fabricate products with higher accuracy and performance. In order to solve this problem, GMDH models were constructed to estimate thermal deformation of machine origin for a vertical machining ceneter through measurement of temperature data of specific points on the machine tool. These models are nonlinear equations with high-order polynomials and implemented in a multilayered perceptron type network structure. Input variables and orders are automatically selected by correlation and optimization procedure. Sensors with small influence are deleted automatically in this algorithm. It was shown that the points of temperature measurement can be reduced without sacrificing the estimation accuracy of $\pm$5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the experimental result, it was confirmed that GMDH methodology was superior to least square models to estimate the thermal behavior of machine tools.
An aspherical lens in information technology has been increased in order to enhance the optical performances. There are two kinds of approaches to machine the aspherica surface is generally conducted by the diamond turning machine, precision grinding machine, and polishing machine. This technique, however, has a problem which needs an expensive and high precision machine in order to increase the surface roughness and the machining accuracy. In this paper, a machine, which is able to machine the aspherical surface, was developed to decrease the cost. Also, the machining of the aspherical surface using a cone was carried out experimentally in order to compare the experiment with the simulation. The results showed that the machining experiments of the aspherical surface by using the titled cone were in accordance with the simulation.
