  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through openings with vertical partitions. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. Exchange flow rates are investigated experimentally by using partitioned opening and opening with extended partition to assess fluids interference of the exchange flow at the stand pipe rupture accident. A tests vessel with the two types of opening on top of test cylinder is used in the experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Amplitude and progress of interference fringes of the flows are observed and used as a support in comparison with the exchange flow rates. Flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air for both two types of the opening are separated by inserted partition within the opening, but in the case of partitioned opening, unseparated flow is formed at the opening entrance and the two flows interface. The exchange flow rate for the partitioned opening is not greater than that of the opening with extended partition because of the fluids interference at the entrance of opening. Finally, the fluids interference at the opening entrance is found to be one of important factors on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.

  • Optical waveguide based on symmetric and asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) type was designed, fabricated and measured the optical characteristics for the application of biosensor. The wavelength of the input optical signal for the device was 1550 nm. And the difference of refractive index was $0.45\;{\Delta}\%$ between core and cladding of the device. The TM(Transverse Magnetic) mode optical properties of the biosensor were analyzed with the refractive index variation of gold thin film deposited for overclad. Nowadays, nano-photonic crystal structures have been paied much attention for its high optical sensitivity. There is a technique to realize the structure, which is called Dip-Pen Nanolithography(DPN) process. The process requires a nano-scale process patterning resolution and high reliability. In this paper, two dimensional nano-photonic crystal array on the surface was proposed for improving the sensitivity of optical biosensor. And the Dip-Pen Nanolithogrphy process was investigated to realize it.

Sensing properties of optical fiber sensor to ultrasonic guided waves

  • Optical fiber sensors have been proven that they have the potential to detect high-frequency ultrasonic signals, in structural health monitoring field which generally refers to acoustic emission signals from active structural damages and guided waves excited by ultrasonic actuators and propagating in waveguide. In this work, the sensing properties of optical fiber sensors based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer were investigated in the metal plate. Analytical formulas were conducted first to explore the parameters affecting its sensing performances. Due to the simple and definable frequency component, the Lamb wave excited by the piezoelectric wafer was employed to study the sensitivity of the proposed optical fiber sensors with respect to the frequency, rather than the acoustic emission signals. In the experiments, according to above investigations, spiral shape optical fiber sensors with different size were selected to increase their sensitivity. Lamb waves were excited by a circular piezoelectric wafer, while another piezoelectric wafer was used to compare their voltage responses. Furthermore, by changing the excitation frequency, the tuning frequency characteristic of the proposed optical fiber sensor was also investigated experimentally.

  • 온도 변화에 민감한 1480 nm LD로 펌핑되는 erbium doped fiber와 단일 광섬유 브래그 격자를 사용하여 스트레인과 온도를 동시에 측정할 수 있는 센서 헤드를 구성하였고 optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) 대신에 마하젠더 간섭계를 demodulator 로 사용하여 측정 정밀도와 속도를 향상 시켰다. 출력 신호의 진폭 변화로 측정한 온도의 최소 측정 단위는 0.05$^{\circ}C$이고 위상 변화로 측정한 스트레인의 경우는 0.1$\mu$strain으로서 0.07 nm의 측정 해상도를 가지는 OSA를 demodulator로 사용하는 경우보다 측정 정밀도가 각각 140배 이상과 700배 이상 향상되었음을 볼 수 있었다.

  • An integrated-optical biochemical sensor structure that can perform homogeneous and surface sensing using a 2×2 balanced-bridge Mach-Zehnder interference structure based on the optimized SOI slot optical waveguide was described, and its performance and characteristics were evaluated. Equations for the two output optical powers were derived and examined using the transfer matrices of a 3-dB coupler and phase shifter (channel waveguide). The length of the 3-dB coupler was determined such that the two output optical powers were same using these formulas. In homogeneous sensing, the effect of the refractive index of an analyte in the range of 1.33-1.36 on the two output optical power distributions was numerically derived, and the sensitivity was calculated based on each output and the difference between the two outputs, the former and the latter being 7.5796-19.0305 [au/RIU] and 15.2601-38.1351 [au/RIU], respectively. In the case of surface sensing, the sensitivity range of the refractive index of 1.337 based on each of the two outputs was calculated as -2.2490--3.5854 [au/RIU] and 1.2194-3.8012 [au/RIU], and the sensitivity range of 4.8048-7.0694 [au/RIU] was confirmed based on the difference between the two outputs.

  • Optical fiber sensor is a subject which has been attracted considerable attention in recent years. Detection of sound pressure with optical fibers positioned in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented in this paper. A fiber length of the order of 150m is wounded is made by hollow cylinder type. To increase the sound signal 3${\times}3$ directional coupler is used. Fiber optic hydrophone is the underwater tank with 2kHz sound source. Finally, it is shown that the fiber optic hydeophone can stably detec 2kHz sound.

  • 편광에 기초한 Mach-Zehnder 간섭계 구조의 무작용 검출 시스템에 대해 기술한다. 특히 불투명하지 않은 물체에 대해서 이 시스템의 성질을 조사하였고, 투명도가 있는 물체라도 무작용 검출이 가능함을 보였다. 무작용 검출의 의미로 볼 때, 검출효율이 70%에 해당되는 시스템을 구성하였으며, 우리 시스템의 유용성을 보여주기 위한 기초적인 실험을 수행하였다.

  • 편광에 기초한 Mach-Zehnder 간섭계 구조의 무작용 검출 시스템에 있어서, 두 가지 시스템의 결함, 즉 시스템 손실과 광자 검출기의 낮은 양자효율이 무작용 검출의 성능에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이들 두 시스템 결함 모두가 얻을 수 있는 최대 검출효율을 제한하지만, 시스템 손실이 작을 때에는 양자효율은 덜 중요해짐을 보인다. 그리고 시스템 손실과 양자효율이 주어졌을 때, 얻을 수 있는 최대 검출효율을 예측하였다.

  • One dimensional and two dimensional nano patterns were fabricated on a 4-inch substrate by Laser Interference Lithography (LIL). Mach-Zehnder interferometer was setup to obtain the interference patterns and adjusted the pattern sizes with change of incident angle. We could obtain a periodic structure with a period of 440 nm using 266 nm laser, and demonstrated a pattern size with $293{\pm}25nm$ over a 4-inch substrate.
