  • In this study, a flashing boiling phenomenon of pressurized water jet was numerically studied and validated against an experimental data in the literatures. The volume of fluid (VOF) technique was used to consider two-phase behavior of water, while the homogeneous relaxation model (HRM) model was used to provide the velocity of phase change. During the flashing boiling through a nozzle, a mach disk was observed near nozzle exit because of pressure drop resulting from two-phase under-expansion. The flashing jet structure, local distributions of temperature/vapor volume fraction/velocity, and position of the mach disk were examined as nozzle inlet temperature changed.

  • The characteristics of dual coaxial jet which composed of inner supersonic nozzle of 26500 in constant expansion rate with 1.91 design Mach number and outer converging one with $40^{\circ}$ converging angle with the variation of outer nozzle stagnation pressures are experimentally investigated in this paper. In which the stagnation pressure for the inner supersonic nozzle is 750kPa thus, the inner jet leaving the nozzle is slightly underexpanded. The plenum pressures of outer nozzle are varied from 200 to 600kPa. Flow visualizations by shadowgraph method, impact pressure and centerline static pressure measurements of dual coaxial jet are presented. The results show that the presence of outer jet affects significantly the structures and pressure distributions of inner jet. And outer jet causes Mach disk which does not appear for the case of single jet stream. As the stagnation pressure of outer jet increases, impact pressure undulation is severe, but the average impact pressure keeps high far downstream.

  • The near field structures of an under-expanded, dual, coaxial, jets issuing from the coaxial nozzles with four different geometries are visualized by using a shadowgraph optical method. Experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of the nozzle-lip thickness, secondary stream thickness, the nozzle pressure ratio and the secondary swirl stream on the characteristics of under-expanded jets. The results show that the presence of secondary annular swirling stream causes the Mach disk to move further downstream and increases its diameter, which decreases with a decrease in the nozzle-lip thickness. The secondary stream thickness has an influence on the location of an annular shock wave.

  • Supersonic free jets discharging from an orifice or a nozzle have long been research subject with a number of engineering applications and have mainly been investigated using dry air or other gas without any condensation effects. The major characteristics of those supersonic jets are now well known in terms of jet pressure ratio and ratio of specific heats of gas. Recently, the supersonic jets of superheated steam or moist air are being used in many industrial applications, in which case is expected that the condensation effects might alter the fundamental structure of the dry air jet. The present study aims to investigate the supersonic moist air jet and to clarify the condensation effects on the jet structure. An experiment is carried out using an indraft wind tunnel facility. The relative humidity of moist air is controlled at the nozzle supply, and the jet pressure ratio is varied to obtain the moderately under expanded flows at the exit of the nozzle. It is found that the relative humidity of moist air can change the diameter and location of Mach Disk.

  • Sonic and supersonic jets include many complicated flow physics associated with shock waves, shear layers, vortices as well as strong interactions among them, and have a variety of engineering applications. Much has been learned from the previous researches on the sonic and supersonic jets but quantitative assessment of these jets is still uneasy due to the high velocity of flow, compressibility effects, and sometimes flow unsteadiness. In the present study, the sonic jets issuing from a convergent nozzle were measured by PIV and Schlieren optical techniques. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Olive oil particles of $1{\mu}m$ was employed to obtain the velocity field of the jets, and the black-white and color Schlieren images were obtained using Xe ramp. A color filter of Blue-Green-Red has been designed for the color Schlieren and obtained from an Ink jet printer. In experiments, two types of sonic nozzles were used at different operating pressure ratios(NPR). The obtained images clearly showed the major features of the jets such as Mach disk, barrel shock waves, jet boundaries, etc.

  • Experiments are performed to investigate the detailed structure of underexpanded twin jet impinging on a perpendicular flat plate. The major parameters, such as nozzle operating pressure and nozzle spacing, are varied to create different jet flow fields resulted from the complicated interactions of the twin jets. From the surface pressure measurements and shadowgraphs taken by schlieren optical system, the jet structure is strongly dependent on the nozzle operation pressure and the spacing. The results obtained show that the closer nozzle spacing may induce to decrease the diameter of the Mach disk within the first shock cell in the underexpanded twin jet. With the increasing nozzle operating pressure and decreasing the nozzle spacing, a new shock wave appears at the entrainment region between the two jets, due to the enhancement of mixing effect of the both jets. The closer nozzle spacing makes the overall impinging pressure level higher, while severe pressure oscillation along the axis of symmetry. Furthermore it is recommended the wider spacing to obtain higher thrust under the present experimental conditions.

  • The steady non-reacted compressible flow field in a symmetric micro-thruster, which is used for the accurate attitude control of a satellite, is analyzed varying the nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) to investigate the plume characteristics. The nozzle throat diameter is 0.06 inch and the area ratio is 56. The recirculation region is found just behind the normal shock at the several NPRs due to the locally adverse pressure gradient along the nozzle centerline when the environmental pressure is atmospheric. This phenomenon, the cause of flow loss, is similar to the flow behind a blunt body. As NPR increases the location of Mach disk, characteristics of the normal shock, moves downstream and its strength increases. The Mach number distribution appears in a wave-type patter after the normal shock because oblique shocks are reflected on the shock boundaries especially when NPRs are very high.
