  • This paper presents a novel fault location scheme on Korean AC electric railway systems. On AC railway system, because of long distance, 40[km] or above, between two railway substations, a fault location technique is very important. Since the fault current flows through the catenary system, it must be modeled exactly to analyze the fault current magnitude and fault location. In this paper, suggesting the novel scheme of fault location, a 9-conductor modeling technique including boost wires and impedance bonds is introduced based on the characteristics of Korean AC electric railway. After obtaining a 9-conductor modeling, the railway system is constructed for computer simulation by using PSCAD/EMTDC. By case studies, we can verify superiority of a new fault location scheme and propose a powerful model for fault analysis on electric railway systems.

  • Background: Although a physician may be the nearest to the radiation source during C-arm fluoroscope-guided interventions, the radiographer is also near the fluoroscope. We prospectively investigated the radiation exposure of radiographers relative to their location. Methods: The effective dose (ED) was measured with a digital dosimeter on the radiographers' left chest and the side of the table. We observed the location of the radiographers in each procedure related to the mobile support structure of the fluoroscope (Groups A, M and P). Data about age, height, weight, sex, exposure time, radiation absorbed dose (RAD), and the ED at the radiographer's chest and the side of the table was collected. Results: There were 51 cases for Group A, 116 cases for Group M and 144 cases for Group P. No significant differences were noted in the demographic data such as age, height, weight, and male to female ratio, and exposure time, RAD and ED at the side of the table. Group P had the lowest ED ($0.5{\pm}0.8{\mu}Sv$) of all the groups (Group A, $1.6{\pm}2.3{\mu}Sv$; Group M, $1.3{\pm}1.9{\mu}Sv$; P < 0.001). The ED ratio (ED on the radiographer's chest/ED at the side of the table) of Group A was the highest, and the ED radio of Group P was the lowest of all the groups (Group A, $12.2{\pm}21.5%$; Group M, $5.7{\pm}6.5%$; Group P, $2.5{\pm}6.7%$; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Radiographers can easily reduce their radiation exposure by changing their position. Two steps behind the mobile support structure can effectively decrease the exposure of radiographers by about 80%.

  • As fingerprinting method, k-nearest neighbor(KNN) has been widely applied for indoor location in wireless location area networks(WLAN), but its performance is sensitive to number of neighbors k and positions of reference points(RPs). So artificial neural network(ANN) clustering algorithm is applied to improve KNN, which is the KNN/ANN hybrid algorithm presented in this paper. For any pattern matching based algorithm in WLAN environment, the characteristics of signal to noise ratio(SNR) to multiple access points(APs) are utilized to establish database in the training phase, and in the estimation phase, the actual two dimensional coordinates of mobile unit(MU) are estimated based on the comparison between the new recorded SNR and fingerprints stored in database. In the proposed algorithm, through KNN, k RPs are firstly chosen as the data samples of ANN based on SNR. Then, the k RPs are classified into different clusters through ANN based on SNR. Experimental results indicate that the proposed KNN/ANN hybrid algorithm generally outperforms KNN algorithm when the locations error is less than 2m.

  • In recent years, the automatic remote control controller of the gamma ray irradiator malfunctions, and radiation workers are continuously exposed to radiation exposure accidents. In the non-destructive testing field, much time and resources are invested in establishing a radioactive source monitoring system in order to prevent potential incidents of radiation. In this study, the gamma-ray response properties of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector were estimated through monte carlo simulation as a previous study for the development of a radioactive source location monitoring system that can be applied universally to various non-destructive testing equipment. As a result of the study, the optimized thickness of the radiation detector varies according to the gamma-ray energy emitted from the radioactive source, and the optimized thickness gradually increases with increasing energy. In conclusion, the optimized thickness of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector was $200{\mu}m$ for the Ir-192, $150{\mu}m$ for the Se-75 and $300{\mu}m$ for the Co-60. Based on these results, the appropriate thickness of lead monoxide-based radiation detector considering secondary-electron equilibrium was evaluated to be $300{\mu}m$ for general application. These results can be used as a basic data for determining the appropriate thickness required in the radiation detector when developing a radiation source location monitoring system for universal application to various non-destructive testing equipment in the future.

  • Location awareness is one of the key functions to build U-city. Recently, many of works for location-aware systems are emerging to commercially apply to on-going large-scale apartment complex. As dwellers or cars being attached with active tags are moving in the U-city complex, the active tags periodically broadcast their own identifiers mu routers fixed along the street or in a building use those information to calculate location of thorn. There are several issues to be considered for such an environment. In this paper we propose i) a new architecture for location-aware system considering such issues ii) technical issues to implement it using active tags, and iii) a mathematical analytic model to investigate overall performance and verify it by comparing with actual experimental results. Through mathematical analysis, we can show that it is more efficient for the routers to send location signals than the tags do. We also show that there are several additional services available in the apartment complex. We conduscted several experiments hi a real ease parking lot to show that our system can locate the location of dwellers or cars.

  • An estimation problem in the environment which GPS signals do not reach, should be solved by employing an indoor location estimation scheme. Location estimation schemes for indoor environments generally include the AOA, TOA, RSS, Fingerprint, and TDOA. For a ship environment where there exist many spaces enclosed by iron plates, the TDOA scheme is appropriate because location estimation is usually performed at a closed range. In this paper, we address the problem of estimating the location of a terminal under the ship environment. The problem of location estimation by using the TDOA is presented in detail, and then an algorithm for applying the estimation to the ship environment is proposed. Finally, the proposed algorithm of location estimation in a ship by the TDOA scheme is verified through simulations from three viewpoints.

  • Many studies have been made on location estimation under indoor environments which GPS signals do not reach, and, as a result, a variety of estimation methods have been proposed. In this paper, we deeply consider a problem of location estimation in a ship with a multi-story structure, and investigate a location estimation method using the fingerprint scheme based on the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. A reliable DB is constructed by measuring 100 received signals at each of 39 RPs in order to employ the fingerprint scheme, and, based on the DB, a simulation to estimate the location of a randomly-positioned terminal is performed. The simulation result confirms that the performance of location estimation by the fingerprint scheme is quite satisfactory.
