In this paper, compensation characteristics of distorted WDM channel due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) is numerically investigated under the assumptions of non-uniformly distributed fiber dispersion, in order to inspect the application of mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) to any exact transmission links. The MSSI is compensation method used in this approach. This method has an optical phase conjugator (OPC) placed in mid-way of total transmission length to compensate distorted WDM channels. It is confirmed that MSSI will become applicable to long-haul WDM systems by controlling input light power of transmission channels, when the averaged dispersion of both fiber sections with respect OPC was varied and distributed unequally each other. Applying MSSI to long-haul WDM system, it is possible to remove all in-line compensator, consequently it will be expected to reducing system cost.

In this paper, we investigated the degree of compensation for WDM channel signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion, self phase modulation(SPM) and cross phase modulation(XPM). The considered system is 120 Gbps (3${\times}$40 Gbps) intensity modulation direct detection(IM/DD) WDM transmission system with path-averaged intensity approximation(PAIA) mid-span spectral inversion(MSSI) as compensation method. This system have highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) as nonlinear medium in optical phase conjugator(OPC). We use 1 dB eye opening peralty(EOP) in order to evaluate the characteristics of compensation for distorted WDM channels. We confirmed that improvement of transmission distance and performance is achieved by MSSI method to distorted long-haul IM/DD WDM channels due to chromatic dispersion, SPM and XPM. And in the aspect of compensation for distorted pulse due to XPM, the MSSI method is effective to IM/DD WDM transmission system with high fiber dispersion coefficient.
When mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI), which inverts the propagated wave into phase-conjugated wave in the middle of the entire transmission distance, is combined with dispersion-managed link, it is very effective in compensating for the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects. In this MSSI combined dispersion-managed link, the shape of the dispersion map, channel data rate, channel wavelength and wavelength spacing, etc. affect the compensation and, consequently, determine the transmission distance and capacity of the WDM signal. In this paper, the compensation according to the extinction ratio of the return-to-zero (RZ) pulse that constitutes the WDM signal in the MSSI combined distributed control link was numerically analyzed. As a result of the simulation, it was conformed that the extinction ratio to obtain the best compensation should be determined depending on the shape of the dispersion map and the size of the residual dispersion per span, which determines the specific shape of the dispersion map. These results show a significant difference from the results in a general optical transmission system, where as the extinction ratio increases, the power difference between the '1' and '0' signals increases, thereby improving reception performance.

In this paper, we investigated the improvement degree of transmission distance of the various initial frequency chirped optical pulse with 5 dBm initial power dependence on the various bit rate and fiber dispersion coefficient, when MSSI(Mid-Span Spectral Inversion) with the optimal pump power condition is adopted for the compensation method for optical pulse distortion. And we analyzed the influence of mutual relation of optical pulse frequency chirp and Kerr effect on the MSSI methods for the long-haul optical transmission through the computer simulation. We found that the compensation degree of distorted optical pulse varies as a consequence of the variation of combined phase modulation of self phase modulation(Kerr effect) and initial frequency chirp parameter dependence on the fiber dispersion coefficient. And we found that, if the transmission bit rate is increased k times, the dispersion coefficient value of dispersion shift fiber is decreased $2^k$ times so as to be almost the same performance of the transmission system with k times lower bit rate.

In this paper, we showed the applicability of power symmetric MSSI(Mid-Span Spectral Inversion) to the long-haul WDM system with the channel interference due to FWM(Four Wave Mixing). And we showed the degree of performance improvement. We used 1 dB EOP(Eye-Opening Penalty) criterion so as to evaluate the degree of compensation dependent on the variation of chirp parameter of optical pulse for the various input power in high speed tansmission system. And we evaluated the maximum input power of channel be able to be the signal to crosstalk noise (SNR) above 20 dB in the transmission link with the channel interference due to FWM. Consequently the proposed MSSI compensation method is capable to transmitting the total 68 WDM channels simultaneously with a 0.4 nm channel spacing and 5.3 dBm maximum input power in a 10 Gbps transmission link. Therefore the proposed power symmetric MSSI compensation method may be very useful for the implementation of long-haul wideband WDM transmission systems with relatively high power and improved performance.
In this paper the numerical methods of finding the optimal position of optical phase conjugator (OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersion are proposed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $16{\times}40$ Gbps WDM system. And the compensation characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with the currently used mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the reception performances are largely improved in the system with the induced optimal parameters than in the system with MSSI through the analyzing the eye opening penalty (EOP) and bit error rate (BER) characteristics. It is also confirmed that two optimal parameters depend on each other, but are less related with the procedural problem about the first optimal value among these.

In this paper, we numerically investigated the optimum pump light power resulting best compensation of pulse distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) in long-haul 3×40 Gbps wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. We used mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) method with path-averaged intensity approximation (PAIA) as compensation approach, which have highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) as nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the mid-way of total transmission line. We confirmed that HNL-DSF is an useful nonlinear medium in OPC for wideband WDM transmission, and in order to achieve the excellent compensation the pump light power is selected to equal the conjugated light power into the latter half fiber section with the input light power of WDM channel depending on total transmission length. Also we confirmed that compensation degree of WDM channel with small conversion efficiency is improved by using pump light power increasing power conversion ratio upper than 1.
In this paper, we investigated the degree of compensation for WDM channel signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion, self phase modulation (SPM) and cross phase modulation (XPM) as a function of transmission length using mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) compensation method. The considered system is $3{\times}40$ Gbps intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) WDM transmission system. This system has highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) as a nonlinear medium in optical phase conjugator (OPC). We confirmed that the transmission length is more increased by applying MSSI to distorted signal due to chromatic dispersion, SPM and XPM as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher. And the compensation degree of distorted WDM channels due to chromatic dispersion, SPM and XPM becomes better stable as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher.

In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted 16-channel WDM signal due to chromatic dispersion self phase modulation(SPM) and four-wave mixing(FWM). The bit rate and uniform frequency spacing of WDM channels are assumed to be 40 Gbps and 100 ㎓, respectively. The compensation method used in this approach is mid- span spectral inversion(MSSI), Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator(On) in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. We confirmed that applying MSSI in WDM channels within special input power level compensates overall interferenced channels mainly due to FWM. But for long wavelength WDM channels having lower conjugated light power with respect to signal light power, compensation quality is deteriorated as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher. Consequently, we confirmed that it is effective D apply MSSI with HNL-DSF as a nonlinear medium of OPC to WDM transmission link with relative small dispersion in order to compensate equally spaced WDM channels.
