  • The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effects depending on the types of reinforcing fibers being influential in view of mechanical properties and impact resistance of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) for applications to precast concrete structure. Hybrid fibers applied therefor were three types such as PP/MSF (polypropylene fiber+macro synthetic fiber), PVA/MAF (polyvinyl alcohol fiber+MSF) and JUTE/MSF (natural jute fiber+MSF), where the volume fraction of PP, PVA and natural jute was applied with 0.2 %, respectively, while based on 0.05 % volume fraction of MSF. The HFRC was tested for slump, compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance. The test result demonstrated that mixture of such hybrid fibers improve compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of concrete. Moreover, it was found that HFRCs to which hydrophilic fibers, i.e. PVA/MSF and JUTE/MSF, were mixed show more improved features that HFRC to which non-hydrophilic fiber, i.e. PP/MSF was mixed. Meanwhile, the finding that PVA/MSF HFRC exhibited better performance than JUTE/MSF HFRC was attributed from the former having higher aspect ratio than that of the latter.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the distance from the posterior root apices to the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and the frequency of roots touching or protruding through the MSF using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This study included 100 subjects divided into different vertical and anteroposterior skeletal growth patterns. On CBCT images, the distance from the posterior root apices to MSF was measured and the frequency of roots touching or protruding through the MSF was evaluated using NNT software (version 5.3.0.0; ImageWorks, Elmsford, NY, USA). Results: No statistically significant differences were found in the distance from the posterior root apices to the MSF among vertical skeletal groups (P>0.05). The palatal roots of the first molar and the palatal, mesio-buccal and disto-buccal roots of the second molars had significantly less distance from MSF in skeletal class II than in class III (P<0.05). The high-angle group had the highest frequencies of roots touching or protruding into the maxillary sinus (49.8%); the lowest proportion of these roots was found in skeletal class III (28.3%) and the highest proportion in class II (50.3%). Males had shorter distances from the posterior root apices to the MSF and higher frequencies of roots protruding through or touching the MSF than females. Conclusion: Anteroposterior skeletal growth patterns and sex affected the distances from the maxillary posterior roots to the MSF. The frequency of roots protruding into or touching the sinus was affected by both vertical and anteroposterior skeletal groups and sex. These findings have implications for dental practice.

  • The auditory system of the Korean greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum korai, RFK) is adapted to its own echolocation signal, which consist of constant frequency (CF) element and frequency modulated (FM) element. In contrast, the Japanese long-fingered bat (Miniopterus schreibersii fuliginosus, MSF) emits FM signals. In the present study, the characteristics of stereocilia in RFK (a CF/FM bat) and MSF (a FM bat) were studied in the apical turn of the cochlea where the lower frequencies are transduced. Stereocilia lengths and numbers were quantitatively measured in RFK by scanning electron microscopy and compared with those of MSF. Each inner hair cells (IHCs) of RFK possessed three rows of stereocilia, whereas MSF possessed five rows of stereocilia. Gradients in stereocilia lengths and numbers of stereocilia of the IHCs of RFK were found to be less pronounced and fewer, respectively, than those of MSF. Each outer hair cells (OHCs) possessed three rows of stereocilia in both species. OHCs stereocilia in RFK that distinguished it from MSF were a shorter length and a greater number of stereocilia. These features suggest that the apical cochleas of RFK are adapted for the processing of higher frequency echolocation calls rather than that of MSF.

  • Inhibitory effects of the methanol extract, hexane extract, methanol soluble fraction (MSF) and juice from 3 weeks fermented Kimchi on the tumor formation in sarcoma-180 cell transplanted mice were studied. Effects of the solvent extracts and juice of the Kimchi on the levels of lipid peroxide, glutathione, and the enzyme activities of the liver were also investigated in normal and sarcoma-180 cell transplanted mice. At 32 days following trans-plantation, MSF reduced the tumor formation by 54% compared with the control group, resulting in the smallest tumor weight. Lipid peroxided content in liver increased by the transplantation of sarcoma-180 cells. However, it decreased when MSF of Kimchi was treated to the mice. MSF also suppressed xanthine oxidase activity in cytosol of the liver cells in mice transplanted by sarcoma-180 cells. Kimchi extracts had no inhibitory effect on hepatic aminopyrine-N-demethylase activity in sarcoma-180 cell transplanted or normal mice. Methanol extract and hexane extract of Kimchi slightly increased hepatic glutathione contents in sarcoma-180 treated mice. The injection of MSF from Kimchi markedly increased glutathione levels in the liver of sarcoma-180 treated mice. The injection of MSF from Kimchi markedly increased glutathione levels in the liver of sarcoma-180 treated mice compared to the controls. The MSF recovered the activities of hepatic glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase that decreased by the injection of sarcoma-180 cells. These results showed that MSF of Kimchi could suppress the growth of tumors, inhibiting lipid peroxide production and xanthine oxidase activity, in mice. We also suggested that Kimchi extract might play an important role in the prevention of cancer by enhancement of the glutathione level itself as well as via glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase.

  • Given a connected, weighted, and undirected graph, the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) should have minimum sum of weights, connected all vertices, and without any cycle taking place. Borůvka Algorithm is firstly suggested as an algorithm to evaluate the MST, but it is not widely used rather than Prim and Kruskal algorithms. Borůvka algorithm selects the Minimum Weight Edge (MWE) from each vertex with distinct weights in $1^{st}$ stage, and selects the MWE from each MSF (Minimum Spanning Forest) in $2^{nd}$ stage. But the cycle check and the number of MSF in $1^{st}$ stage and $2^{nd}$ stage are difficult to implication by computer program even if it is easy to verify visually. This paper suggests the generalized Borůvka Algorithm, This algorithm selects all of the same MWEs for each vertex, then checks the cycle and constructs MSF for ascending sorted MWEs. Kruskal method bring into this process. if the number of MSF greats then 1, this algorithm selects MWE from ascending sorted inter-MSF edges. The generalized Borůvka algorithm is verified its application by being applied to the 7 graphs with the many minimum weights or distinct weight edges for any vertex. As a result, the generalized Borůvka algorithm is less required for cycle verification then the Kruskal algorithm. Therefore, the generalized Borůvka algorithm is more fast to obtain MST then Kruskal algorithm.

  • RNA accumulating strain of Torulopsis versatilis MT-1 was cultured in molasses medium for higher contents of RNA in cell. Yeast cells were harvested at logarithmic phase on synchronous culture. Yield of cells on dry base to input sugar was 59.5%. Crude protein content was 55.1% in cell. RNA content was 13.9%. Some problems found in the process for the preparation of yeast extracts were improved by the addition of culture broth of Streptomyces faecalis MSF which secrete RNase (5' nuclease and 5' adenylic acid deaminase). When the culture broth of S. faecalis MSF was added in autolysis process 46% of RNA in cell was converted to I and G(5' inosinic acid and 5' guanylic acid) in extract. By addition of 3-7% culture broth of S.faecalis MSF in autolysis or enzymolysis process at the start or early stage, RNA in extract was converted easily to I and G and protein in cells was easily extracted and hydrolyzed to amino acid. Taste of those yeast extracts was delicious. The yeasty smell in yeast extracts was removed. And cell debris was easily removed from extract.

  • In this work, the effect of hybrid salts precipitation-nanofiltration (SP-NF) process on the scale deposits in thermal and membrane desalination processes has been studied. The analysis was carried out to study the scale formation from the Arabian Gulf seawater in MSF and RO reference processes by changing the percentage of pretreatment from 0 to 100%. Four different SP-NF configurations were suggested. A targeted Top Brine Temperature (TBT) of $130^{\circ}C$ may be achieved if 30% portion is pretreated by SP and/or NF processes. As a rule of thumb, each 1% pretreatment portion increases the reference TBT of $115^{\circ}C$ by $0.6^{\circ}C$. For both MSF and RO, parallel pretreatment of certain percentage of the feed by SP and the rest by NF, showed the lowest scale values. The case showed the best values for sulfate scale prevention and the highest values of increasing the monovalent ions relative to the divalent scale forming ions. Sulfate scale is significant in MSF process while carbonate scale is significant in RO. Salt precipitation was suggested because it is less costly than nanofiltration, but nanofiltration was used here because it is efficient in sulfate ions removal.
