Objective : Functional brain mapping study on acupuncture stimulation using the [14C]2-deoxyglucose([14C]2-DG) autoradiography provides quantitative data and visualized pathway in central nervous system(CNS). We aimed to investigate the neural pathway and spatial distribution of metabolic activity elicited in CNS on electroacupuncture stimulation using [14C]2-DG autoradiography. Methods : The study were divided into three groups by stimulation times. 45-mins stimulation group according to Sokoloffs method, 5-mins stimulation group according to Duncun's method, and 15-mins stimulation group. ;A venous catheter was equipped into right jugular vein. The rats (Sprague-Dawley rats, 230-260g) were kept fastened loosely on a holding platform without anesthesia. Electroacupuncture stimulation (5 ms, 2 Hz, 1~3 mA) were applied on the left Zusanli (ST36) acupoint and [14C]2-DG ($25{\mu}Ci/rat$) injection was performed through the catheter. After sacrifice, the brain and the spinal cord were made to sections for film image. The film images were digitalized as the isotope concentration based upon comparison of optical densities with that of the standards and normalized by the optical density of corpus callosum. Results : 1. 15-mins stimulation group was most effective among 3 experiments. 2. On 15-mins stimulation group, medial geniculate nucleus, intetpeduncular nucleus intermedius, ventral periolivary nucleus, caudal periolivary nucleus, medial superior olive, lateral paragigantocellular nucleus, including hypothalamic arcuate nucleus were increased by more than 25% (at least, p<0.05) by electroacupuncture stimulation. 3. Especially, the metabolism in hypothalamic arcuate nucleus was increased by 90% (p<0.05). 4. The fact that arcuate nucleus of hypothalamus might play a role of interconnection area between ascending and descending pathway of acupuncture stimulation was demonstrated visually. Conclusions : Advanced study on electroacupuncture stimulation elicited significant increase of metabolic activity in various nuclei of hypothalamus will provide the important experimental basis in research of the relationship between electroacupuncture stimulation and internal visceral functions.
Objectives : To investigate the analgesic effect and its cholinergic mechanism of electroacupuncture(EA) in the rat model of collagen-induced arthritis(CIA). Methods : Immunization of male Sprague-Dawley rats with bovine typeII (CII) collagen emulsified in Freund's incomplete adjuvant, followed by a booster injection 14 days later, leads to development of arthritis in more than 70% of rats by 21 days postinjection. After three weeks of first immunization, EA stimulation(2 Hz, 0.07 mA, 0.3 ms) was delivered into Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) for 30 minutes. Analgesic effect was evaluated by tail flick latency(TFL). We compared the analgesic effect of EA with TFLs between pretreatment of normal saline and pretreatment of Atropine (1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) and Neostigmine ($100{\mu}g/kg$, intraperitoneal) in CIA. Results : 1. TFLs were gradually decreased in CIA as increasing severity of arthritis. 2. Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) EA stimulation in CIA increased TFLs and the effect lasted for 60 minutes. 3. Increased TFLs with Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) EA stimulation were inhibited with pretreatment of atropine in CIA 4. Increased TFLs with Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) EA stimulation did not show an obvious synergistic effect with pretreatment of neostigmine in CIA. Conclusions: Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) EA showed analgesic effects in CIA. The analgesic effects of Jogsamni($ST_{36}$) EA were inhibited by atropine pretreatment and combined application of Jogsamni(ST36) EA and neostigmine did not show an synergistic effect. These observations suggest that intrinsic muscarinic cholinergic pathways represent an important modulating system in pain perception of inflammatory pain in CIA It is suggested that, the active mechanism of analgesic effect in EA may involve the release of acetylcholine in the spinal cord.
The degradation of herbicide $^{14}C-bifenox$ was studied in soils under anaerobic conditions. $^{14}C-bifenox$ was treated in silty loam and sandy loam soils, respectively at a rate of 2.1 mg/kg, and the soil was incubated under anaerobic conditions at $25^{\circ}C$ for 180 days. The mineralization, solvent extractable and non-extractable residues, degradation products of bifenox were investigated during the experiments. The relative amounts of $^{14}CO_2$ were 1.97 and 0.9% of applied $^{14}C$ in silty loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. The non-extractable residues of sandy loam soil increased dramatically up to 79.12% of applied $^{14}C$, and were higher than those of silt loam soil, suggesting physico-chemical properties and especially organic matter contributed to the difference of $^{14}C$ between two soils. The non-extractable residues were formed mainly humin fraction and increased with time. The major metabolites were nitrofen, 5-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-Nitrobenzoate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy aniline and methyl 5-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) anthranilate by GC/MS analysis. From the results of volatilization, mineralization and degradation of bifenox, bifenox was stable chemically and biologically in soil.
The in vitro growth of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] plantlets was investigated under different light sources: fluorescent lamp (control); red (660 nm), blue (460 nm), white light-emitting diodes (LED), and two mixtures of blue and red LED (R:B = 8:2, and 7:3). Single node explants (10 mm) of three cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shincheonmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with $0.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 6-benzyladenine for 4 weeks. Explants were exposed to $150{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ photosynthetic photon flux at a distance of 20 cm, constant temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, and under 16/8-h (day/night) photoperiod. Using the same method, the in vitro growth of 10 cultivars under red LED was also compared. After 3 weeks, vine length was highest in plantlets cultured under red LED, and lowest in plantlets cultured under blue LED. Fresh and dry weights were also greatest in plantlets cultured under red LED. Compared to the control, vine thickness was significantly higher in plantlets grown under white LED and the 7:3 R:B LED mixture. Significant differences were observed among the 10 cultivars grown under red LED. 'Matnami', 'Shincheonmi', and 'Shinhwangmi' all had excellent vine lengths, and fresh and dry weights. Compared to the control, vine elongation of sweet potato plantlets was most effective under red LED, and culture duration was about 1 week shorter.
Soybean and tobacco tissue cultured with modified MS media containing 4 different ratio(as N) of nitrate to ammonium combination which were 3:0, 2:1, 1:2 and 0:3. The highest callus growth in soybean were observed in the 2:1 medium. The medium containing nitrate only was detrimental to soybean callus growth. Tobacco callus grown with nitrate-only grew as well as those in the 2:1 and very slowly with ammonium-only. In tobacco callus, the total nitrogen in the callus increased with the increase of nitrogen concentration in the medium, but in soybean callus, the opposite result was noted. Nitrate reductase activity in tobacco callus was high when grown with nitrate-only but low with ammonium-only. In case of soybean callus, nitrate reductase activity was high in the 2:1 and remarkably low in nitrate-only medium. Both in soybean and tobacco callus, the activity of glutamine synthetase was high with nitrate-only, but low with ammonium.

In order to compare salt tolerance among potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.), in vitro plants of each cultivar were cultured on the Murashige and Skoog's medium containing different levels of NaCl (0, 75, 150, and 225 mM). The suitable level of NaCl for a comparison of the shoot and root growth between potato cultivars was 75mM. Shoot length and weight were better in 'Dejima', 'Superior', 'Jayoung', and 'Haryeong' than in other cultivars such as 'Goun' and 'Atlantic'. Normal root growth was observed in 'Seohong', 'Superior', and 'Haryeong', while 'Goun', 'Atlantic', 'Dejima', 'Jowon', and 'Chuback' showed no root. Proline contents in all the cultivars increased as affected by NaCl levels, then the increase amount was fewer in the cultivars showed a better growth in both shoot and root than in others showed a poor growth. As a result of this study, 'Superior' and 'Haryeong' were determined as salt tolerant cultivars and therefore using these cultivars it would be possible to potato production at salt arable land such as reclaimed tidal.
This study was conducted to develop an antibiotics marker-free potato (Solanum tuberosum L., cv. Taedong valley) plant having resistance against two herbicides. Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA105, harboring a binary vector plasmid pCAMBIA3300 containing bar gene under the control of a promoter CaMV35S and linked CP4-EPSPS genes driven by CaMV35S promoter, was used in the current study. The leaf segments of newly bred potato variety (cv. Taedong Valley) was co-cultured with Agrobacterium. Then, the regenerated individual shoots were excised and transferred to potato multiplication medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L phosphinothricin. The shoots were rooted in MS medium without hormone and obtained putative transgenic plant E3-6. Integration of target genes into the E3-6 plant and their expression was confirmed by PCR, Southern analysis, and ELISA test. The tissue necrosis test on young leaf blade and shikimic acid accumulation test using the tissue of E3-6 plant were conducted to investigate the resistance to glufosinate-ammonium and glyphosate, respectively. The transgenic plants (E3-6) simultaneously showed a high resistance to both herbicides. The same results were surely obtained also in the whole plants foliar-treated with alone or mixture of two herbicides, glufosinate-ammonium and glyphosate.

Objectives: Aluminum is well known as a potent neurotoxicant. There are many reports that aluminum can be toxic to humans and to animals. However, there are only few studies on the assessment of aluminum exposure among humans in Korea. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate current aluminum concentrations among the adult population in regions of Korea. Methods: We selected 439 adults aged 20-89 years from the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region and certain other sites. Blood aluminum concentrations were analyzed using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). The geometric means (GM) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of aluminum concentrations were calculated, and we also confirmed the proportion of excess of the aluminum reference value. Results: Total GM (95% CI) of aluminum levels was 14.26 (13.43-15.14) ppb. Levels among males (15.58 [14.09-17.22] ppb) were higher compared to among females (13.51 [12.54-14.55] ppb), and levels increased with subject age from 40 years and over. Three point one nine percent of the subjects exceed the reference value of 50 ppb. Lastly, aluminum concentration has a log-normal distribution with lnN (x; 2.89, 0.642), x>0. Conclusion: In the present study, we evaluated the distribution of blood aluminum concentrations among the normal population in Korea, and we found some adults exceeding the reference levels. However, in order to compare the results with other studies, an extended study including measurement of serum aluminum level is required. In addition, further research on various population groups, including occupational exposure of workers, is required.

Background Three-dimensional (3D) model printing improves visualization of anatomical structures in space compared to two-dimensional (2D) data and creates an exact model of the surgical site that can be used for reference during surgery. There is limited evidence on the effects of using 3D models in microsurgical reconstruction on improving clinical outcomes. Methods A retrospective review of patients undergoing reconstructive breast microsurgery procedures from 2017 to 2019 who received computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans only or with 3D models for preoperative surgical planning were performed. Preoperative decision-making to undergo a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) versus muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (MS-TRAM) flap, as well as whether the decision changed during flap harvest and postoperative complications were tracked based on the preoperative imaging used. In addition, we describe three example cases showing direct application of 3D mold as an accurate model to guide intraoperative dissection in complex microsurgical reconstruction. Results Fifty-eight abdominal-based breast free-flaps performed using conventional CTA were compared with a matched cohort of 58 breast free-flaps performed with 3D model print. There was no flap loss in either group. There was a significant reduction in flap harvest time with use of 3D model (CTA vs. 3D, 117.7±14.2 minutes vs. 109.8±11.6 minutes; P=0.001). In addition, there was no change in preoperative decision on type of flap harvested in all cases in 3D print group (0%), compared with 24.1% change in conventional CTA group. Conclusions Use of 3D print model improves accuracy of preoperative planning and reduces flap harvest time with similar postoperative complications in complex microsurgical reconstruction.
Geophysical surveys(electrical resistivity, self-potential, seismic refraction, GPR) were conducted to investigate the physical properties of the subsurface, and to delineate the flow channel of leachate from a AMD(acid mine drainage), buried rock wastes and tailings, and drainage pipes at an abandoned mine(Kwangyang mine). Especially in rainy season the sites appear to be abundant in AMD leachate, characterized by electrical conductivities of 0.98-1.10 ms/S. Electrical resistivity sections indicate that the leachate flows running in two directions at southern part rise up through the narrow fracture zones at the central part and contaminates the surrounding soil and stream. Such schematic features at the anomalous zone are well correlated with negative peaks in self-potential data, the limited penetration depth in GPR data and low velocity zone in seismic refraction data. Shallow high-resistivity zone is associated with the buried rock wastes which cause the diffractions in GPR image. In addition, the events at depth of approximately 1-1.25 m in GPR sections must be the metal pipes through which AMD is drained off to the inner bay.
