We proposed the above-knee prosthesis using rotary MR damper in which knee joint is semi-actively controlled by microprocessor. Dissipation torque in the knee joint can be controlled by the magnetic field which is induced by applying current to a solenoid, Tracking control of knee joint angle was tested by 3-DOF Leg simulator. The experimental results show that the proposed above-knee prosthesis system had good performance in swing phase tracking and repetitive controller in conjunction with a computed control law and PD control law, reduced RMS tracking error as the repetitions of tracking. Moreover, desired knee angle trajectory was generated based on the estimation of gait period with the gyro signal and the tracking control was performed.

Semi-active control systems have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, because they offer the adaptability of active devices without requiring large Power sources. One of the most Promising semi-active devices proposed for structural control is magneto-rheological fluid dampers (MR damper). In this paper, an MR damper having the capacity of about 1 ton was designed and fabricated. and series of tests were performed to grasp the fundamental Performance characteristics of it. It was also applied to a 6-story steel structure under random excitation and 3-different seismic excitations for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absorption. Through this study, the techniques and know-hows for MR damper production were acquired.

In order to investigate the stability of magneto-rheological fluid based squeeze film damper (MR-SFD), its negative stiffness effect, which arises from magnetization of MR-SFD, is identified theoretically and experimentally. The analytical model of MR-SFD includes the magnetic circuit as well as the displacement stiffness associated with the squeeze mode of MRF. Extensive experiments are carried out to measure the magnetic attraction forces generated in the MR-SFD, with the excitation frequency and the eccentricity of the journal varied, which are controlled by an active magnetic bearing. The simulation and experimental results are found to be in good agreement. It is concluded that the negative stiffness effect dominates only in the low frequency region because its effect diminishes in the high frequency region due to the eddy-current loss.
In order to study the effect of the magnetic anisotropy on the giant magnetoresistance in a Co/Cu multilayered system, the angle dependent magnetoresistance (MR) was measured. The experimental results showed that the maximum MR ratio depends on the angle between the direction of the applied field and the easy axis. The angular modulation of the MR ratio can be explained by the alignments of the two 'effective' magnetization vectors that are bound to their own easy axes. Two maxima observed in MR loops at the second antiferromagnetic maximum are discussed in relation to the magnetic anisotropy, The simulated results under the assumption of the existence of two in-plane easy axes in the sample are compared with the experiments.

In order to study the effect of the magnetic anisotropy on the giant magnetoresistance (GMR), the angle dependent magnetoresistance (MR) was measured. The experimental results show that the maximum MR ratio depends on the angle between the direction of the applied field and that of the easy axis. The angular modulation of the MR ratio can be explained by the alignments of the two 'effective' magnetization vectors that are bound to their own easy axes. The typical property of MR loops at 2$\^$nd/ antiferromangtic maximum (AFM) such as two maxima was discussed in relation with the magnetic anisotropy (MA). The simulated results under an assumption of the two in-plane easy axes, which exist in the sample, were compared with the experiments.
In the case of designing control devices in a building, reliance on experimental formulation or engineering concepts without using optimization algorithms leads to non-optimal solutions or design parameters, which makes the use of control devices costly and unreasonable. The optimization algorithms are capable of identifying the required number of parameters for a specific design problem, however, this process is difficult and inefficient in dealing with some specific optimal design processes. This paper aims to introduce an upgraded version of the salp swarm algorithm to handle some engineering design. The performance of the new upgraded algorithm is tested using some benchmark test functions as well as a six-story benchmark building equipped with semi-active MR dampers. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully applied to get an optimal design of the MR dampers in the building.
Adequate postural control depends on the spatial and temporal integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory information. Especially, the musculoskeletal function is essential to maintain the postural control. The experimental studies was performed on the muscular activities in the lower extremities during maintaining and moving exercises on an unstable platform with Magneto Rheological(MR) dampers. The unstable platform of the developed system was controlled by electric currents to the MR dampers. A subject executed the maintaining and moving exercises which are presented through the display monitor. The electromyographies of the eight muscles in lower extremities were recorded and analyzed in the time and the frequency domain: the muscles of interest were rectus femoris(RF), biceps femoris(BF), tensor fasciae latae(TFL), vastus lateralis(VL), vastus medialis(VM), gastrocnemius(Ga), tibialis anterior(TA), Soleus(So). The experimental results showed that the muscular activities differed in the four moving exercises and the nine maintaining exercises. For the anterior-posterior pattern, the TA showed highest activities; for the left-right pattern, the TFL; for the 45, $-45^{\circ}$ pattern, the TFL and TA. Also, the rate of the increase in the muscular activities were affected by the condition of the unstable platform with MR dampers for the maintaining and moving exercises. The experimental results suggest that the choice of different maintaining and moving exercises could selectively train different muscles in various intensity. Futhermore, the findings suggested that the training using this system can improve the ability of postural control.
Corticosterone is known to modulate GABAergic synaptic transmission in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. However, the underlying receptor mechanisms are largely unknown. In the anterior hypothalamic area (AHA), the sympathoinhibitory center that project GABAergic neurons onto the PVN, we examined the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) of GABAergic neurons using intact GAD65-eGFP transgenic mice, and the effects of corticosterone on the burst firing using adrenalectomized transgenic mice. GR or MR immunoreactivity was detected from the subpopulations of GABAergic neurons in the AHA. The AHA GABAergic neurons expressed mRNA of GR (42%), MR (38%) or both (8%). In addition, in brain slices incubated with corticosterone together with RU486 (MR-dominant group), the proportion of neurons showing a burst firing pattern was significantly higher than those in the slices incubated with vehicle, corticosterone, or corticosterone with spironolactone (GR-dominant group; 64 vs. 11~14%, p<0.01 by $x^2$-test). Taken together, the results show that the corticosteroid receptors are expressed on the GABAergic neurons in the AHA, and can mediate the corticosteroid-induced plasticity in the firing pattern of these neurons. This study newly provides the experimental evidence for the direct glucocorticoid modulation of GABAergic neurons in the AHA in the vicinity of the PVN.
An experimental study on the Joule-Thomson cryocooler with the mixed refrigerant (MR) is described in this paper, J-T refrigeration experiment was performed with a single stage regular air-conditioning compressor The mixed refrigerant in the experiment was composed of 75% mol fraction of $N_2$. 30% moi fraction of CH$_4$. 30% moi fraction of $C_2$H$_{6}$. 10% mot fraction of $C_3$H$_{8}$ and 15% mot fraction of iso-C$_4$H$_{10}$. Oil mist in the MR stream could be eliminated completely by the glass microfiber filter. Since a single stage compressor that had been designed thor R22 is not appropriate for high Pressure ratio of the mixed refrigerant especially during the transient period. two modifications were incorporated to regular J-T refrigeration cycle. First. a Portion of the MR was by-passed at the inlet of the heat exchanger and transferred directly to 7he suction of the compressor in the modified system. Second, a buffer volume was Prepared to change the mass flow rate of refrigerant. The pressure ratio in J-T expansion device was relieved at the beginning of the operation due to the by-Pass scheme. but it gradually decreased during the transient Process as some of the MR component condensed at low temperature. The buffer volume at the suction side was used to increase the MR gas density in the system after the transient cool-down period. Form the experiment with the modified system, the refrigerator could reach the lowest temperature of -152$^{\circ}C$ without cooling load. and about -15$0^{\circ}C$ with 5 W of cooling load . . . .
In this study, a new bicycle system was developed to improve muscular strength using the Magneto-Rheological(MR) rotary brake. The friction load of the MR rotary brake is adjusted according to muscle strength of the subjects. The characteristic of muscular strength was studied with various friction loads of MR rotary brake. The friction load was occurred with the current, applied to the MR. rotary brake. Experiments was composed of several cycling trials for various friction loads. In training programs involving muscle improvement, it is necessary to confirm muscle activity and fatigue. To measure the muscle activity and fatigue, EMG signals of rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tensor fasciae latae (TFL), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VAS), gastrocnemius (GAS), tibialis anterior (TA) and soleus (SOL) muscles were collected with surface electromyography and analyzed into time and frequency domain. The experimental results showed that the muscle activity according to the applied current to the MR rotary brake was significantly different. The more the current was applied, the higher value of the integrated EMG (IEMG) was obtained. Especially, the magnitude of IEMG of the RF, BF, TFL and VL varied in direct proportion to the current. However, there was not significant in the median frequency as the cycling time continue.
