An Efficient Hardware Architecture of Intra Prediction in H.264/AVC Decoder (H.264/AVC 디코더용 인트라 예측기의 효율적인 하드웨어 구현)

  • H.264/AVC is the upcoming video coding standard of ITU-T H.264 and ISO MPEG-4 AVC. The new standard can achieve a significant improvement up to 50% in compression ratio compared to MPEG-4 advanced simple profile. In this paper, we propose the novel intra prediction scheme to speed up intra prediction process in H.264/AVC decoder and show the hardware architecture for it. The proposed scheme uses the concurrent processing of the 4$\times$4 intra prediction, which is based on that some 4$\times$4 block pairs in a 16$\times$16 luma block can be processed concurrently. The proposed scheme can reduce intra prediction time by 33 %.

Complexity Analysis of Internet Video Coding (IVC) Decoding

  • The Internet Video Coding (IVC) standard is due to be published by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) for various Internet applications such as internet broadcast streaming. IVC aims at three things fundamentally: 1) forming IVC patents under a free of charge license, 2) reaching comparable compression performance to AVC/H.264 constrained Baseline Profile (cBP), and 3) maintaining computational complexity for feasible implementation of real-time encoding and decoding. MPEG experts have worked diligently on the intellectual property rights issues for IVC, and they reported that IVC already achieved the second goal (compression performance) and even showed comparable performance to even AVC/H.264 High Profile (HP). For the complexity issue, however, there has not been thorough analysis on IVC decoder. In this paper, we analyze the IVC decoder in view of the time complexity by evaluating running time. Through the experimental results, IVC is 3.6 times and 3.1 times more complex than AVC/H.264 cBP under constrained set (CS) 1 and CS2, respectively. Compared to AVC/H.264 HP, IVC is 2.8 times and 2.9 times slower in decoding time under CS1 and CS2, respectively. The most critical tool to be improved for lightweight IVC decoder is motion compensation process containing a resolution-adaptive interpolation filtering process.

  • A MVC (Multi-view Video Coding) method, which uses both an illumination change-adaptive ME (Motion Estimation)/DC (Motion Compensation) and a 2D (Dimensional) direct mode, is proposed. Firstly, a new SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) measure for ME/MC is proposed to compensate the Luma pixel value changes for spatio-temporal motion vector prediction. Illumination change-adaptive (ICA) ME/MC uses the new SAD to improve both MV (Motion Vector) accuracy and bit saving. Secondly, The proposed 2D direct mode that can be used in inter-view prediction is an extended version of the temporal direct mode in MPEG-4 AVC. The proposed MVC method obtains approximately 0.8dB PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) increment compared with the MPEG-4 AVC simulcast coding.

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard shows extremely higher coding efficiency, but it causes high computational complexity. Especially, the intra mode decision using the rate-distortion method requires many computations. Thus, the efficient intra mode decision methods have been proposed by decreasing the encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient intra mode decision algorithm using $4{\times}4$ integer transform coefficients in the conversion of MPEG-2 to H.264 standard. It is shown that the proposed algorithm reduces encoding time and complexity compared to the conventional algorithm, while showing similar PSNR performance.

  • In this paper, a method of MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) multiplexing for Ultra HDTV (UHDTV) and its design and implementation as a SW tool is described. In practice, UHD video may be divided into several HD videos and each video is encoded in parallel. Therefore, it is necessary to synchronize and multiplex multiple bitstreams encoding each HD video for transmitting and storing UHD video. In this paper, it is assumed that 4 HD videos partitioning a UHD spatially are encoded as H.264/AVC and two 5.0 channel audios are encoded by AC-3. Therefore, 4 H.264/AVC elementary streams (ESs) and 2 AC-3 ESs is mainly considered in the TS multiplexing of UHD. For the carriage of H.264/AVC and AC-3 over MPEG-2 TS, PES packetization and TS multiplexing are designed and implemented based on the extended specification of the MPEG-2 Systems and ATSC (Digital audio compressed standard), respectively. The implemented UHD TS multiplexing tool emulates real time HW operation in the time unit corresponding to the duration of one TS packet transmission in a given TS rate. In particular, in order to satisfy the timing model, the buffers defined in the TS System Target Decoder (T-STD) are monitored and their statuses are considered in the scheduling of TS multiplexing. For UHD multiplexing, two kinds of multiplexing structures, which are UHD re-multiplexing and UHD program multiplexing, are implemented and their strength and weakness are investigated. The developed UHD TS multiplexing tool is tested and verified in terms of the syntax and semantics conformance and functionalities by using a commercial analyzer and real-time presentation tools.

  • 본 논문에서는 화면간 상관성을 이용한 최적의 비트 할당 알고리즘을 제안한다 제안된 알고리즘은 기존의 Q2 비트율 제어 알고리즘을 기반으로 하며, 인트라(Intra) 화면에 대한 비트할당과 인터(Inter) 화면에 대한 비트 할당으로 구성된다. 일반적으로 비디오 시퀀스(Sequence)의 각 화면들은 서로 많은 상관성을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 점을 고려하여, 다른 화면들의 화질에 상대적으로 더 많은 영향을 미칠 수 있는 중요한 화면을 선택하고, 선택된 화면들은 각각의 중요도에 따라 더 많은 비트가 할당되어 화질이 향상된다. 선택된 화면의 화질 향상은 이 화면으로부터 움직임 예측과 움직임 보상을 하는 다른 화면의 화질까지도 향상시킨다. 본 논문에서 제안된 방법은 MPEG-4비디오를 비롯하여 최근에 만들어진 H.264/AVC 부호화 표준에서도 좋은 결과를 보였다.

  • H.264/AVC (baseline profile)은 MPEG-4 (simple profile)에 비하여 약 2배정도 향상된 압축 성능을 나타내는 것으로 알려져, DMB 방송, DVD 등에 사용될 예정이며, 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스에 사용될 차세대 비디오 압축 표준으로 인정받고 있다 하지만, 부호기의 복잡도는 MPEG-4 simple profile에 비하여 16배정도 높아져서, 실시간을 요구하는 서비스, 또는 임베디드 환경을 갖는 서비스에 사용하는데 심각한 제약을 갖는다. 따라서, 기존의 표준 코덱들을 대체하여 다양한 통신 환경에서 향상된 화질의 비디오 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 코덱의 복잡도 개선이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문은 H.264/AVC 비디오 코덱을 임베디드 환경을 갖는 통신 서비스에 적용하기 위하여 코덱의 복잡도를 개선하기 위한 방법을 제시한다

  • The object of this paper is to make temporal direct mode clear by providing a solution to the following problem : if the co-located block in the list 1 reference picture for direct mode has only the 1ist 1 motion vector or both the 1ist 0 and list 1 motion vectors, then which motion vector will be used for the direct mode motion vector calculation\ulcorner This paper also shows how to derive reference picture index and direct mode motion vector for each list in order to guarantee the high coding efficiency. when the co-located macroblock is in intra mode. Furthermore, the reasonable calculation methods for the direct mode motion vectors in the various cases are presented. Finally, experimental results show that the proposed temporal direct mode provides the comparable performance against the spatial direct mode. Therefore, the simulation proves that the proposed temporal direct mode is acceptable.

  • H.264| MPEG-4 AVC is a new video codingstandard defined by JVT (Joint Video Team) which consists of ITU-T and ISO/IEC. Many techniques are adopted fur the compression efficiency: Especially, an intra prediction in an inter frame is one example but it leads to excessive amount of encoding time due to the decision of a candidate mode and a RDcost calculation. For this reason, a fast determination of the best intra prediction mode is the main issue for saving the encoding time. In this paper, by using the result of statistical relation between intra $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ intra predictions, the number of candidate modes for $4{\times}4$ intra prediction is reduced. Firstly, utilizing motion vector obtained after inter prediction, prediction of a block mode for each macroblock is made. If an intra prediction is needed, the correlation table between $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ intra predicted modes is created using the probability during each I frame-coding process. Secondly, using this result, the candidate modes for a $4{\times}4$ intra prediction that reaches a predefined specific probability value are only considered in the same GOP For the experiments, JM11.0, the reference software of H.264|MPEG-4 AVC is used and the experimental results show that the encoding time could be reduced by 51.24% in maximum with negligible amounts of PSNR drop and bitrate increase.
