Sorption of aqueous uranium(VI) ion onto a cation-exchangeable K-birnessite colloid (양이온 교환능을 갖는 K-Birnessite 콜로이드에 의한 수용성 우라늄(VI) 이온의 흡착 연구)

  • This paper describes the sorption behaviors of aqueous uranium ions on the K-birnessite. K-birnessite was synthesized by adding a concentrated HCl to an aqueous solution of $KMnO_4$. Physicochemical characteristics of the K-birnessite, such as structure, specific surface area and surface charge, were investigated. K-birnessite is a layered material and the $K^+$ ions exist in the interlayer of layered K-birnessite. BET specific surface area of the K-birnessite was 38.30 m2/g. The surface charge of K-birnessite was $-1.65\;C/m^2$ at pH 5.00 and ionic strength of 0.010 M $NaClO_4$, at which the sorption experiments of uranium ions were carried out. Uranium ions were incorporated into the interlayer of the K-birnessite by cation-exchange reaction with $K^+$ ions, and the distribution coefficient is quite similar to those of common ion-exchange materials. The results might be applicable in the retardation of migration of radioactive materials from the underground disposal site of high-level radioactive waste.

Rheological Characteristics and Molecular Weight of Ammonium-Sulfate Fractions of Tara Gum (염석법에 의한 타라검 분획들의 분자량 및 리올로지 특성)

  • This study aimed at characterizing the rheological properties and molecular weight of tara gum fractionated with ammonium sulfate. Tara gum was separated into six fractions (F1-F6) at different concentrations of ammonium sulfate, ranging from 12.21 to 28.67% (w/w). The yield of the tara gum fractions ranged between 4.98 and 17.47%, and their intrinsic viscosity ranged from 9.38 to 12.44 dL/g. The highest values of Huggins coefficient (k') and viscosity-molecular mass were observed in fraction F3. The shear viscosity of the tara gum fractions was measured by a cone-plate viscometer, clearly showing shear thinning behavior. Size-exclusion chromatography results showed that the molecular weight ranged between 635.42 and 776.71 kg/mol, and the F3 fraction exhibited higher values of molecular weight.

Impact of Application Rates of Pre-planting Liming Fertilizers on Changes in Soil Chemical Properties and Growth of 'Melody Yellow' Pansy in Plug Production (팬지 'Melody Yellow'의 플러그 육묘시 석회질 비료의 시비수준이 토양화학성 변화와 식물생장에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective of this research was to investigate the influence of liming fertilizers on changes in soil chemical properties and growth of pansy 'Melody Yellow' in plug production. To achieve this, dolomite (DO) with 0, 1.0, 3.5, 8.0 or $13.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and calcium carbonate (CC) with 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, or $4.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in application rate were incorporated into peatmoss + vermiculite (1:1, v/v) during the formulation. The treatments of $3.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO and 2.5 or $3.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of CC had acceptable range of soil solution pH such as 5.6-6.2. Faster rising of pH was observed in root media containing CC rather than those of DO, indicating higher solubility of CC. The soil Ca concentrations in all treatments of CC were 2 times as high as those of DO. The treatments of 3.5 or $8.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO had the highest soil Mg concentrations, but all treatments of CC had lower soil Mg concentrations than control indicating that additional applications of Mg fertilizers are required. The elevated application rate of DO or CC resulted in the increase of fresh and dry weight; however, plant heights were not influenced by application of liming fertilizers. The results of tissue analysis showed that application of DO or CC influenced the Ca and Mg contents, but did not influence the contents of other nutrients such as N, P, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.

  • Aromatic and aliphatic copolyesters for the dispersing agent were synthesized by two stage reaction, esterification and polycondensation. Copolyesters were blended with PET in the melt state and their thermal and rheological properties were investigated. From GPC analysis Mn's and Mw's of copolyesters were about 30000 and 65000g/mol, respectively. From DSC experiment copolyesters had melting range of $90{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. Copolymer composition was in good agreement with comonomer feed ratio from $^1H$-NMR analysis. Copolyesters and SPA (standard sample) were blended with PET in the melt state. From DSC experiment, copolyesters and SPA were miscible with PET. From the dynamic melt viscosity experiment, melt viscosity of blended sample was increased as the content of aromatic copolyester was increased, while it was decreased as the content of aliphatic and SPA were increased. As for volume resistivity of dry color containing carbon black and copolyesters with dispersing time, aromatic copolyester showed highest value. It was conferred from this result that aromatic copolyester was the best dispersing agent for carbon black in PET resin.

Genotoxicity Study of Litsea japonica Fruit Flesh Extract (까마귀쪽나무열매추출물의 유전독성 평가)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the genotoxicity of Litsea japonica fruit-hexane extract (LJF-HE). In order to examine the genotoxicity, we carried out bacterial reverse mutation assay, chromosome aberration assay, and a micronucleus induction (MN) test according to the OECD and the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) toxicity test guidelines. In the bacterial reverse mutation assay, no significant increase in revertant colonies, nor bacterial toxicity, was observed in the LJF-HE treatment group, regardless of the absence or presence of metabolic activation by the S9 mixture. However, in the positive control group, revertant colony counts were shown to be more than twice that of the negative control group. The chromosome aberration test showed that the repetition rate of abnormal chromosome aberration was less than 5%, regardless of the treatment time, and with or without the S9 mixture. No significant change was observed when (p < 0.05) compared with the negative control group. The micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCE) repetition rate of the polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE) showed no significant changes when compared with the negative control group (p < 0.05). The PCE portion of total erythrocytes also showed no significant changes (p < 0.05). These results showed that LJF-HE had no significant genotoxic effects.

Antioxidant Activity and Chemical Characteristics of Orostachys malacophyllus and Fermented Orostachys malacophyllus (와송과 발효 와송 추출물의 이화학적 특징 및 항산화 활성)

  • Orostachys malacophyllus grow on the old roofing tile or on the rock of mountain and is belong to Crassulaceae family. After air drying for Orostachys malacophyllus (OM), using the mixture of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus) was fermented (FOM). OM and FOM extracted using water (W), ethanol (E) and methanol (M) and were measured extracts yield, pH and Brix. Extracted OM and FOM were tested by in vitro experimental models of α,α´-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, Fe/Cu reducing power, linoleic acid peroxidation using ferric thiocyanate and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods and peroxidation of rat liver homogenate. In addition, the bioactive materials (phenolic compounds, flavonoids and minerals) were measured. The highest phenolic compounds and flavonoids were OME 122.2 mg/100 g and OME 84.0 mg/100 g. OM and FOM′s major minerals were K, Ca and Mg. The highest free radical scavenging activity showed in FOMM (93.9%), OMM (93.4%), FOME (92.1%) and OME (91.9%) at 0.5% additional level. Fe reducing powers were strong in FOME and FOMM and Cu reducing powers were strong in OME and FOMM. Antioxidant activities on lipid peroxidation using rat homogenate as measured by TBARS method showed strong in FOME and on lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid as measured by ferric TBA method showed strong in OME and FOME and measured by ferric thiocyanate showed strong in FOME and FOMM.

Antioxidative Effects and Chemical Characteristics of Annona muricata Leaf Extracts (그라비올라 잎 추출물의 이화학적 특성 및 항산화 활성)

  • Annona muricata, generally known as soursop, graviola, or sirsak, is native to the warmest tropical areas of North and South America and is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including India and Nigeria. This study tested the contents of polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and minerals, as well as the antioxidative effects of DPPH radical-scavenging activity, Fe/Cu-reducing power, linoleic-acid peroxidation using thiobarbituric-acid (TBA) methods and peroxidation of rat-hepatocyte microsomes, and ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay. These were tested with in-vitro experimental models using water, ethanol, and methanol extracts of the Annona muricata leaf (AMl). Water extracts of AMl showed the highest extraction yield (1.76%). The total polyphenol-compound concentration was the highest in the methanol extract of AMl. However, the flavonoids concentration was the highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. AMlMl major minerals were Ca, K, and Mg. In DPPH radical-scavenging activity, the contents exhibited a strong scavenging effect on the ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. Additionally, the Fe/Cu-reducing power was strong in ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate-induced linoleic-acid peroxidation using TBA methods and auto-oxidation of rat-hepatic microsomes showed strong antioxidative activities in ethanol extracts of AMl. ${\beta}$-Carotene bleaching was also highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. These results may provide the basic data to understand the chemical characteristics and antioxidative effects of Annona muricata leaf extract for the development of functional foods.

Studies on the Nutritional Components of Purple Sweet Potato(Ipomoea batatas) (자색(紫色) 고구마의 영양성분에 관한 연구)

  • Two sweet potato CV.(Ipomoea batatas) were examined, i.e. purple flesh sweet potato(PSP) and light yellow flesh sweet potato(LYSP) which varied in degree of sweetness. On a fresh weight basis, nitrogen free extract in cultivars ranged from $25.73{\sim}26.24%$ and PSP contained more crude fat than LYSP. Total amino acids of PSP and LYSP were 5676.57mg% and 4550.86mg%, respectively. Aspartic acid, serine, alanine and valine were the major components in sweet potatoes. Sulfur-containing amino acids are the first limiting amino acid in PSP. The major fatty acids in PSP and LYSP analyzed by GC were palmitic acid, linoleic acid. The content of the saturated fatty acid was less than that of the unsaturated fatty acid. Carbohydrate contents were $75.43{\sim}79.10%$ and neutral sugars contents were $67.22{\sim}64.85%$(dry wt). Two sweet potato CV. contained the most glucose of all neutral sugars. PSP contained 11.88% for uronic acid, 59.42% for starch. Free sugars of PSP(0.82%) was much less than that of LYSP(2.53%). The contents of thiamin, riboflavin and niacin were similar, and the ascorbic acid contents in PSP and LYSP were 63.4mg% and 48.7mg%(dry wt), respectively. Comparing the mineral content in PSP, K was the greatest element in concentration followed by mg, Ca, Na. The total dietary fiber(TDF) value was 13.43% in PSP, 9.79% in LYSP respectively. The ratio of soluble dietary fiber(SDF) content and insoluble dietary fiber(IDF) content to TDF content for PSP were 57.6%, 42.4%, respectively.

Chemical Composition of Several Herb Plants (서양 허브식물의 화학성분)

  • Chemical compositions of several herbs (rosemary, mint, thyme, sage, and lavender) cultivated in Korea were analyzed. Approximate compositions were as follows: moisture $69.92{\sim}82.10%$, crude ash $2.48{\sim}6.15%$, crude fat $0.40{\sim}2.46%$, crude protein $0.84{\sim}1.57%$, and crude fiber $2.48{\sim}6.15%$. Total contents of phenolics determined by Folin-Dennis's method were in the range of $73.24{\sim}197.79mg%$. Contents of minerals, Na, Ca, Mn, P, Mg, Zn, and Fe determined by ICP-AES were $43.0{\sim}112.5,\;177.5{\sim}304.0,\;0.5{\sim}1.5,\;74.0{\sim}218.5,\;57.0{\sim}116.0,\;1.0{\sim}2.0$ and $3.0{\sim}5.0mg%$, respectively. Free sugar contents determined by HPLC were: sucrose $0{\sim}7.61$, glucose $0.94{\sim}15.92$, and rhamnose $0.64{\sim}7.99mg%$. Fatty acids including palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic acids were identified by GC. Linoleic and linolenic acid contents were higher than those of palmitic and stearic acids. Aroma components identified by GC-MS were 1,8-cineole, ${\alpha}-phellandrene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;{\beta}-pinene,\;{\beta}-thujone$, borneol, butan-1-ol, cis-sabinene hydrate, ${\delta}-carene,\;{\gamma}-terpinene$, and verbenone.

Studies on Saccharification and Citric Acid Fermentation of Alcoholic Distillery Waste(I) (주정증류 폐기물의 당화 및 구연산 발효에 관한 연구(I))

  • Alcoholic distillery waste was utilized as dual purposes to produce citric acid and to reduce the amount of waste to be treated. Enzyme and acid hydrolysis of this waste were studied to suggest effective way of present purpose. Enzymatic hydrolysis of this naked barley alcoholic distillery waste by $\alpha$-and $\beta$-amylase gave glucose as 8g/l concentration at $55^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, which produced 1g/l citric acid and 5.33g/l mycelial. This waste material hydrolyzed with 25% HCl at $120^{\circ}C$ showed 21.5g/l glucose and produced 1.75g/l citric acid with 4.9g/1 mycelial. The glucose concentration was decreased to 3.44g/l by further 2nd acid hydrolysis because the monosugars were decomposed at prolonged hydrolysis conditions. The addition of 3g/l $NH_4NO_3$ increased the mycelial growth but reduced the amount of citric acid formed. The formation of citric acid was increased at low concentration of manganese ion.
