  • This paper performs a numerical computation of ship maneuvering performance in waves. For this purpose, modular-type model (MMG (Mathematical Modeling Group) model) is adopted for maneuvering simulation and wave drift force is included in the equation of maneuvering motion. In order to compute wave drift force, two different seakeeping programs are used: AdFLOW based on Wave Green function method and SWAN based on Rankine panel method. When wave drift force is calculated using SWAN program, not only ship forward speed but also ship lateral speed are considered. By doing this, effects of lateral speed on wave drift force and maneuvering performance in waves are confirmed. The developed method is validated by comparing turning test results in regular waves with existing experimental data. Sensitivities of wave drift force on maneuvering performance are, also, checked.

  • The variation in the course keeping ability in relation to rudder type is investigated using simulations with 3 different types of rudders (a normal rudder, normal rudder with a plate, and Schilling rudder) under wave conditions. The simulation is developed based on an MMG model with Kijima's regression model, along with the data from Son's experiments and Kose's experiments. A 3-D source distribution method is applied to calculate the source of the external wave forces for the simulation. The coefficients of an autopilot controller that may affect the course keeping ability are also estimated from the simulations with the different rudders. The course keeping ability is evaluated by comparing the forward distances while the ships are simulated with the rudders and autopilot controller.

  • In this paper, the automatic depth control system and the collision avoidance system of the Manta UUV have been established in vertical and horizontal plane. The PID control theory and the Fuzzy theory are adopted in this system. The 6-DOF MMG model had been established by theoretical calculations and captive model test results. The depth control simulation results have been fully presented. The collision risks of the UUV had calculated by the fuzzy theory with the virtual sonar system. Finally, the automatic depth control system and the collision avoidance simulation system of Manta UUV have been fully developed and simulated.

  • Since the introduction of the mandatory energy efficiency design index (EEDI), several studies have been conducted on the maneuverability of waves owing to the decrease in engine power. However, most studies have used the mean wave force during a single cycle to evaluate maneuverability and investigated the turning performance. In this study, we calculated the external force in accordance with the angle of incidence of the wave width and wavelengths encountered by KVLCC2 (KRISO very large crude-oil carrier) operating at low speeds in regular waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We compare the model test results with those published in other papers. Based on the external force calculated using CFD, an external force that varies according to the phase of the wave that meets the hull was derived, and based on the derived external force and MMG control simulation, a maneuvering simulation model was constructed. Using this method, a weather vaning simulation was performed in regular waves to evaluate the course-keeping ability of KVLCC2 in waves. The results confirmed that there was a difference in the operating trajectory according to the wavelength and phase of the waves encountered.

  • Mathematical model of maneuvering motion for a Mobile Harbor is established and versatile applications to the special situations of maneuvering are attempted. The Mobile Harbor in this research has twin Azipod thruster and twin bow thruster. In order to predict the maneuverability of Mobile Harbor, a mathematical model was developed on the basis of MMG model, and some model test results were adopted for the simulation of Mobile Harbor. As a result, the turning motions of the Mobile Harbor were successfully calculated. and the optimal berthing system was completed.

  • The Mathematical Model, which can describe the maneuvering motion of a ship in low speed, is highly required these days because it is directly related to the safety of ship in confused harbour. Kose has presented a new model for the low speed maneuvering motion, but the usefulness of it is not confirmed widely. Lets of difficulties are revealed in the case of low speed maneuver, The first is the fact that a ship moves the stirred water region for the longer time than in the case of high speed. So, the hydrodynamic forces, exerted on the hull need to be treated strictly, not by the ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients. Another difficulty is arised from the fact the lateral motion is relatively large comparing to the longitudinal motion in low speed. And, by the result the effect of cross-flow drag or vortex sheding effects are dominant. Besides, the captive model tests of low speed motion has lots of problems. For example, the hydrodynamic forces do not converge to a certain values for the long time. And the absolute values of measured forces are very small, so we must expend lots of efforts to raise up the S/N ratio of the experiments. In this paper, a new mathematical model for the maneuvering motion in low speed, is built up, and the usefulness is discussed, comparing with other models, for example, Kose's model or M.M.G. model or Cross-Flow model, The CMT data for a PCC model of 3.00 M length, released from the RR-742 of Japan, are used for the validation of each models.

  • FPSO and shuttle tanker are connected to each other by a mooring hawser and a loading hose through which cargo oil is off-loaded. Even in mild sea-state. environmental loads can cause unstable large drift motions between two vessels in tandem off-loading operations, which may result in collision incidents. Accordingly. the analysis on the relative motion between two vessels due to the environmental loads should be investigated in initial design stage. In this study, the low speed maneuvering equation is employed to simulate nonlinear motions of FPSO and shuttle tanker. Low frequency wave drift forces including hydrodynamic interactions between two vessels are evaluated by near field approaches. Current loads are determined by mathematical model of MMG and wind loads are calculated by employing the wind spectrum according to the guidelines of API-RP2A. Mooring forces produced by turret mooring lines and a flexible hawser are modeled quasi-statically by catenary equations. The effect of environmental loads that affect nonlinear motion is investigated through variation in their magnitudes and the nonlinear motions between FPSO and shuttle tanker are simulated under wave, current and wind in time domain.

  • Most of the ShipHandling Simulators of full-mission-bridge system need vast area to install and even PC-based maneuvering simulators are often equipped with Steering Wheel or Engine Telegraphe etc. of data input interface, which necessarily makes the user face with excessive financial burden. These have been one of the obstacles for the officers, captains, pilots and students in access to maneuvering simulation whenever they want to try it in advance prior to actual ship maneuvering. Subsequently, all the officers and captains come to have little chances to train themselves until they arualified as a pilot after a long period of time of realship maneuvering practice on board, which means they have to control they have to control their own ship at sea without clear understanding on her maneuverability when they are forced to do it on the way. And these lack of capability for maneuvering have used so often to result in marine casualties of collision with other ships or pier facilities while maneuvering in harbor. To prevent those accidents by means of enhancing their maneuvering ability, PC-based DeskTop Simulator that allows anyong to access readily at anytime is needed and in conformation to such demand this simulator has been developed. The Software this simulator written in Turbo Pascal Ver. 5.0 has adopted MMG mathmatical model theoretically in part and also it was designed to make it possible that all numeric data inputs and outputs with graphic presentation for maneuvering operation be carried out just only with keyboard and monitor console. With the Simulation software, all the officers, captains, pilots and even students who has a proper computer at hand are expected to be able to make an attempt to simulate the maneuvering of their ownship or any other types of them at any port in which they want to do it.
