  • The polymethylene-bridged dinuclear half-titanocenes [(CH$_2$)$_{n}$(C$_{5}$ H$_4$)$_2$][TiCl$_3$]$_2$ (n=5(10), 7(11), 9(12)) have been synthesized by treating the distannylated derivatives of the ligands with two equivalents of TiCl$_4$ in toluene. All complexes are characterized by IR, $^1$H NMR, $^{13}$ C NMR and mass spectrometry. In order to examine the catalytic properties of the dinuclear complexes styrene polymerization has been conducted in the presence of MMAO. From the polymerization experiments it was found that ( i ) all the prepared complexes 10-12 produced syndiotactic polystyrenes, ( ii ) the complex 12 holding the longest bridging ligand exhibited the highest activity but produced a polymer having the smallest molecular weight among the polymethylene-bridged dinuclear half-titanocenes. This behavior was attributed to the influence of electron-donating caused by the polymethylene bridge between two active centers as well as the effect of steric congestion around metal center caused by the proximal distance between two active sites.s.

  • A series of dinuclear half-sandwich titanium complexes with aryloxy substituent at titanium$[(\eta^5-cyclopentadienyl)(aryloxy)TiCl_2]_2[(CH_2)_n]$ (n=3, n=6, n=9) have been successfully synthesized and their styrene polymerization properties have been investigated. All complexes are characterized by $^1H\;NMR,\;^{13}C\;NMR$, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. In order to examine the catalytic properties of the dinuclear complexes styrene polymerization has beer conducted in the presence of MMAO. It was found that (i) all the prepared complexes were very effective catalyst for the production of SPS (syndiotactic polystyrene), (ii) the complex with the longest bridge between the two active sites exhibited greatest catalytic activity among the three catalysts, but produced SPS with the smallest molecular weight, (iii) the activities of dinuclear half-titanocens with aryloxy substitution at titanium metal were greater than those of the chloride substituted compounds. These results indicate that not only the nature of the bridge between the two active sites but also the property of substituents at the metal exert a significant influence on the polymerization behaviors of the dinuclear half-titanocene.

  • The new trisiloxane-bridged heterometallic dinuclear metallocenes, hexamethyltrisiloxanediyl(cyclopentadienyltitanium trichloride) (cyclopentadienylindenyl zirconium dichloride) , $C_3ITi-Cp(CH_3)_2Si-O-Si(CH_3)_2-O-Si(CH_3)_2-Cp-ZrIndCI_2$ (1) and hexamethyltrisiloxanediyl (cyclopentadienylindenylhafnium dichloride) (cyclopentadienylindenyl zirconium dichloride), $C_2IndHf-Cp(CH_3)_2Si-O-Si(CH_3)_2-Cp-ZrIndCl_2$ 2) connecting two dissimilar metallocenes were synthesized and used for ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) cocatalyst. The catalytic activity of heterometallic dinuclear metallocenes, 1 and 2 was lower than that of corresponding mononuclear metal-locene as well as two physically mixed catalysts, $CpTiCl_2/Cp_2ZrCl_2 and Cp_2HfCl_2/Cp_2ZrCl_2$. On the tither hand, MWD of PE obtained with 1 and 2 was remarkably broader ($M_w/M_n$) became up to 9.4) than those of PEs prepared with the corresponding mononuclear metallocenes and mixed catalysts. With analysis by GPC and CFC, it was found that PE produced by the heterometallic dinuclear metallocenes exhibited the definite bimodal GPC curves that should cause the broadening of MWD.

  • We have prepared the polymethylene-bridged, dinuciear, half-sandwich constrained geometry catalysts (CGC)[Zr(η$\^$5/:η$^1$-C$\_$9/H$\_$5/SiMe$_2$NCMe$_3$)]$_2$[(CH$_2$)$\_$n/][n=6(9), n=12(10)]by treating 2 equivalents of ZrCl$_4$with the corresponding tetralithium salts of the ligands in toluene. $^1$H and $\^$13/C NMR spectra of the synthesized complexes provide firm evidence for the anticipated dinuciear structure. In $^1$H NMR spectra, two singlets representing the methyl group protons bonded at the Si atom of the CGC are present at 0.88 and 0.64 ppm, which are considerably downfield positions relative to the shifts of 0.02 and 0.05 ppm of the corresponding ligands. To investigate the catalytic behavior of the prepared dinuciear catalysts, we conducted copolymerizations of ethylene and styrene in the presence of MMAO. The prime observation is that the two dinuclear CGCs 9 and 10 are not efficient for copo-lymerization, which definitely distinguishes them from the corresponding titanium-based dinuclear CGC. These species are active catalysts, however, for ethylene homopolymerization; the activity of catalyst 10, which contains a 12-methylene bridge, is larger than that of 9 (6-methylene bridge), which indicates that the presence of the longer bridge between the two active sites contributes more effectively to facilitate the polymerization activity of the dinuciear CGC. The activities increase as the polymerization temperature increases from 40 to 70$^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the molecular weights of the polyethylenes are reduced when the polymerization temperature is increased. We observe that dinuciear metallocenes having different-length bridges give different polymerization results, which reconfirms the significant role that the nature of the bridging ligand has in controlling the polymerization properties of dinuclear catalysts.

  • The polysiloxane-bridged dinuclear metallocenes $[(SiMe_2O)_n-SiMe_2(C_5H_4)_2][(C_9H_7)ZrCl_2]_2$ (n=1 (7), 2 (8), 3 (9)) have been generated as a model complex for the immobilized metallocene at silica surface by treating the respective disodium salts of the ligands with 2 equivalents of $(C_9H_7)ZrCl_3$ in THF. All three complexes are characterized by $^1H$ NMR and measurement of metal content through ICP-MS. It turned out that the values of ${\Delta}{\delta}=[{\delta}_d-{\delta}_p]$, the chemical shift difference between the distal $({\delta}_d)$ and proximal $({\delta}_p)$ protons, for the produced dinuclear compounds (0.47 for 7, 0.49 for 8, and 0.5 for 9) were larger than the Δδ value of the known ansa-type complex holding the same ligand as a chelating one, that is just the opposite to the normal trend. In order to compare polymerization behavior of the dinuclear metallocene with the corresponding mononuclear metallocene, (Cp)$(C_9H_7)ZrCl_2$ was separately prepared. To investigate the catalytic properties of the dinuclear complexes and mononuclear metallocenes ethylene polymerization has been conducted in the presence of MMAO. The polymerization results display the typical activity dependence on polymerization temperature for all complexes. The most important feature is that the polymers from the dinuclear metallocenes represent enormously improved molecular weight compared with the polymer from the corresponding mononuclear metallocene. In addition, the influence of the nature of the bridging ligand upon the reactivities of the dinuclear metallocenes has also been observed.

  • The copolymerization characteristics of a newly-synthesized catalyst, $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$, and its analogue, $rac-Me_2Si(Ind)_2ZrCl_2$, were examined in the ethylene/1-octene copolymerization while varying the concentration of 1-octene in the reaction mixture. The activity of $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was decreased with increase of comonomer concentration, which is different from the usual comonomer effect of the metallocene catalysts with a bridge structure. The contents of 1-octene in the copolymer from the catalyst with 2-p-tolyl substituent were higher than those from the catalyst without that substituent. The melting point, crystallinity, and molecular weight decreased with comonomer content which was more apparent for $rac-Me_2Si(2-p-tolylindenyl)_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst.

  • Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.
