  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interdental distances of anterior, premolar, and molar teeth at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and 2 mm below the CEJ in healthy natural dentition with cone-beam computerized tomography (cone-beam CT) in order to provide valuable data for ideal implant positioning relative to mesiodistal bone dimensions. Materials and Methods: Two hundred patients who visited Dental Hospital, Wonkwang University, who had natural dentition with healthy interdental papillae, and who underwent cone-beam CT were selected. The cone-beam CT images were converted to digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) files and reconstructed in three-dimensional images. To standardize the cone-beam CT images, head reorientation was performed. All of the measurements were determined on the reconstructed panoramic images by three professionally trained dentists. Results: At the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 1.84 mm (anterior teeth), 2.07 mm (premolar), and 2.08 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.55 mm (anterior teeth), 2.20 mm (premolar), and 2.36 mm (molar). At 2mm below the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 2.19 mm (anterior teeth), 2.51 mm (premolar), and 2.60 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.86 mm (anterior teeth), 2.53 mm (premolar), and 3.01 mm (molar). Conclusion: The interdental distances in the natural dentition were larger at the posterior teeth than at the anterior teeth and also at 2 mm below the CEJ level compared with at the CEJ level. The distances between mandibular incisors were the narrowest and the distances between mandibular molars were the widest in the entire dentition.

  • OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to find out static two-point discrimination (TPD) in fingertips. METHODS: This was a cross-section, measure study of static two-point discrimination involving healthy young adults. Measure was completed by 48 college students in Andong Science College from June 1 to 12, 2004. The minimal distance at which two-points could be discriminated was measured from thumb to little finger. RESULTS: For dermatomal regions of the fingertip, mean values ranged from 3.3mm to 4.9mm (thumb 3.6mm, index finger 3.3mm, middle finger 3.8mm, ring finger 4.2mm, and little finger 4.7mm in the left hand; thumb 3.7mm, index 3.5mm, middle 4.0mm, ring 4.3mm, and little 4.9mm in the right hand). A significant difference in discrimination ability was found between men and women, 3.5mm for women showed a greater sensitivity than 4.1mm for men in the left middle fingertip(p=0.0109), also 3.9mm for women showed a greater accuracy than 4.5mm for men in the left ring fingertip(p=0.0388). In the right index fingertip, women (3.1mm) have a narrow distance than men (3.6mm)(p=0.0329). The minimal distance of TPD was found a significant difference between 20 and 30 years in age. 4mm for 30 years showed a greater distance than 3.5mm for 20 years in the left thumb fingertip(p=0.0354), also, 3.8mm for 30 years showed a greater distance than 3.2mm for 20 years in the left index fingertip(p=0.0174), and 4.3mm for 30 years showed a greater distance than 3.7mm for 20 years in the left middle fingertip(p=0.0444). In the right index fingertip, 20 years (3.2mm) had also a narrow distance than 30 years (4.1mm)(p=0.0020), 20 years (3.9mm) showed a narrow distance than 30 years (4.6mm) in the right middle fingertip(p=0.0124), and 20 years (4.1mm) showed a greater sensitivity than 30 years (5.0mm) in the right ring fingertip(p=0.0070). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that distance of TPD in the both index fingertips for 20 years women was significantly narrowed.

  • The study investigated the buckling behavior of sandwich composite columns with different hole sizes and hole positions when they were applied to a compressive load. The columns consisted of 1.7mm thick faces of glass fabric/epoxy and 23mm, 37mm, 48mm, and 61mm thick cores of urethane-foam. Different hole sizes with the diameter of 25mm and 38mm were considered in this experiment. To evaluate the effect of hole position on the buckling behavior, we considered three types of hole position: 25mm diameter hole located at the center, 25mm diameter hole at 1/4 position from the center to the end of the column, and 25mm diameter hole at 1/2 position from the center to the end of the column. According to the results, buckling and maximum loads of the column having 25mm diameter hole were lower by 10% compared to those of the column without hole, whereas the loads for the column having 38mm diameter hole were 30% less than those of the column without hole. Hole position appeared to have no effect on buckling and maximum loads. Major failure modes were observed as follows: the core shear failure for the thin columns having 23mm and 37mm thick cores, and the face-core debonding for the thick columns having 48mm and 61mm thick cores.

  • The output of Stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, 6 kinds of steel wires, 4 kinds of combined steel wires, 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes were used. The results are summarized as follows; Among 6 kinds of steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm,\;{\phi}\;1.6\;mm,\;{\phi}2.0\;mm,\;{\phi}2.7\;mm),$ the two steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm)$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 4 kinds of combined steel wires $({\phi}l.6-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}l.6\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}l.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm),\;the\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm$ showed the highest in effectiveness.

  • The under-registration of water meters of 20mm to 50mm in diameter, installed in Seoul city, was estimated by random sample method. The sample sites and sampled meters were selected for the measurements of flow rates and accuracy tests, respectively. The measurement of flow rates was conducted for 20mm to 50mm meters for about 20 days per site using flow meters and data loggers. The under-registration of 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, and 50mm meters was observed as 3.96%, 1.10%, 2.47%, 4.04%, and 1.04%, respectively. The under-registration might be increased more or less as malfunction and failure of the sampled meters was not considered. In this study the under-registration of 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, and 50mm meters was accurately estimated on the basis of the investigation data. The estimation of under-registration of water meters, one of the basic figures in water industry, contributed to accurate calculation of leakage, water supply and consumption, and strategic planning to reduce the unaccounted-for water.

  • Prupose : We analyzed setup errors induced by using air-vacuum cushion as immobilization device in patients with rectal cancer. Materials and methods : We had treated the twenty patients with rectal cancer by 6 MV, 10 MV X-ray from Aug. 1998 to Aug. 1999 at Chungnam National University Hospital. All patients were treated at prone position. They were separated to two groups, control group, 10 patients using styrofoam, and test group, 10 patients using styrofoam and air-vacuum cushion. We measured errors of posterior field for x, y axis and lateral field for z, y axis with simulation film and EPID image using a matching technique. Results : In control group, the mean displacement values of pelvic bone landmark for x axis and y axis were 0.02 mm. 0.78 mm, respectively and the standard deviations of systematic error were 2.13 mm, 2.40 mm, respectively and the standard deviation of random error were 1.46 mm. 1.51 mm, respectively. In test group, the mean displacement values of x axis and y axis were -0.33 mm. 0.81 mm, respectively and the standard deviations of systematic error were 1.71 mm, 3.08 mm, respectively and the standard deviations of random errors were 1.40 mm. 1.88 mm, respectively. The mean displacement values of z axis and y axis were 2.98 mm. 0.74 mm, respectively and the standard deviations of systematic error were 4.75 mm, 2.65 mm, respectively and standard deviations of random error were 2.69 mm. 1.86 mm, respectively. The statistical difference of field size by using air vacuum cushion between two groups in posterior direction and lateral direction was not shown. Conclusion : We think that use of air-vacuum cushion may not be an advantage for improving setup accuracy in rectal cancer patients.
