  • Pattern classification extracts various types of pattern information expressing objects in the real world and decides their class. The top priority of pattern classification technologies is to improve the performance of classification and, for this, many researches have tried various approaches for the last 40 years. Classification methods used in pattern classification include base classifier based on the probabilistic inference of patterns, decision tree, method based on distance function, neural network and clustering but they are not efficient in analyzing a large amount of multi-dimensional data. Thus, there are active researches on multiple classifier systems, which improve the performance of classification by combining problems using a number of mutually compensatory classifiers. The present study identifies problems in previous researches on multiple SVM classifiers, and proposes BORSE, a model that, based on 1:M policy in order to expand SVM to a multiple class classifier, regards each SVM output as a signal with non-linear pattern, trains the neural network for the pattern and combine the final results of classification performance.

  • The potential of neural networks for the recognition of the printed Korean characters is examined. In spite of good classification capability of neural networks, it is difficult to train a neural network to recognize Korean characters. The difficulty is due to a large number of Korean characters, the similarities among the characters, and the large number of data from the character images. To reduce the input image data, DC components are extracted from each input images. These preprocessed data are used as input to the neural network. The output nodes are composed to represent the characteristics of Korean characters. A MLP (multilayer perceptron) with one hidden layer was trained with a modified BEP algorithm, This method gives good recognition rate for the standard positioned characters of more than 2,300. The result shows that neural networks are well suited for the recognition of printed Korean characters.

  • Three quality factors of bread during baking process were measured to develop neural network models for bread baking process. Firstly, volume and browning changes during bread baking process were measured using image processing technique and temperature changes inside the bread during process were measured by K-type thermocouples. Relationships among them showed nonlinearity. Secondly, multilayer perception structure with error back propagation learning was used to construct neural network models. Three neural network models for volume, browning, and bread temperature were developed respectively. Developed models showed good performance with predictive error of 4.62% for volume and browning changes after 30 seconds, 7.38% for volume and browning changes after 2 minutes, and 1.09% for temperature change inside the bread respectively.

  • Two opioid peptides, YPLDL and YPLDLF, were isolated from enzymatic digests of spinach ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) and named rubiscolin-5 and -6, respectively. These peptides were selective for delta-receptor and the latter was about 3 times more potent than the former. After oral administration in mice at the dose of 100 mg/kg, rubiscolin-6 showed analgesic activity in tail pinch test. It also stimutated learning performance at the same dose in passive avoidance experiment using step-through apparatus. An immunostimulating peptide, MITLAIPVNKPGR, was isolated from a trypsin digest of soybean protein and named soymetide. Immunostimulating activy of soymetide was mediated by fMLP receptor. Interestingly, after oral administration in rats at a dose of 300 mg/kg (po.), soymetide-4 (MITL) protected alopecia (hair-loss) induced by etoposide, a cancer chemotherapy agent. Stimulation of IL-1 release by the peptide was involved in the mechanism. Ovokinin(2-7), RADHPF, is a vasorelaxing peptide released from ovalbumin by the action of chymotrypsin. It lowered blood pressure of spontaneously hypersensive rats (SHR) after oral administration at a dose of 10 mg/kg. RPLKPW, which was designed by replacing 4 amino acid residues in ovokinin(2-7), exhibited hypotensive activity at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg (po.). This peptides was introduced into 3 homologous sites in soybean beta-conglycinin alpha' subunit by site-directed mutagenesis of the cDNA and expressed in E. coli. The minimum effective dose for hypotensive activity of the genetically modified beta-conglycinin alpha' subunit was 10 mg/kg (po.), which is about 1/200 that of ovalbumin.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new topology of Self-Organizing Polynomial Neural Networks (SOPNN) based on genetically optimized Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization. Let us recall that the design of the 'conventional' SOPNN uses the extended Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique to exploit polynomials as well as to consider a fixed number of input nodes at polynomial neurons (or nodes) located in each layer. However, this design process does not guarantee that the conventional SOPNN generated through learning results in optimal network architecture. The design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of the SOPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or PNs) with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomials, and input variables) and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. An aggregate performance index with a weighting factor is proposed in order to achieve a sound balance between the approximation and generalization (predictive) abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based SOPNN, the model is experimented using pH neutralization process data as well as sewage treatment process data. A comparative analysis indicates that the proposed SOPNN is the model having higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.reviously.

  • Recently, many researchers have been involved in finding deterministic equations which can accurately predict future event, based on chaotic theory, or fractal theory. The theory says that some events which seem very random but internally deterministic can be accurately predicted by fractal equations. In contrast to the conventional methods, such as AR model, MA, model, or ARIMA model, the fractal equation attempts to discover a deterministic order inherent in time series data set. In discovering deterministic order, researchers have found that neural networks are much more effective than the conventional statistical models. Even though prediction accuracy of the network can be different depending on the topological structure and modification of the algorithms, many researchers asserted that the neural network systems outperforms other systems, because of non-linear behaviour of the network models, mechanisms of massive parallel processing, generalization capability based on adaptive learning. However, recent survey shows that prediction accuracy of the forecasting models can be determined by the model structure and data structures. In the experiments based on actual economic data sets, it was found that the prediction accuracy of the neural network model is similar to the performance level of the conventional forecasting model. Especially, for the data set which is deterministically chaotic, the AR model, a conventional statistical model, was not significantly different from the MLP model, a neural network model. This result shows that the forecasting model. This result shows that the forecasting model a, pp.opriate to a prediction task should be selected based on characteristics of the time series data set. Analysis of the characteristics of the data set was performed by fractal analysis, measurement of Hurst index, and measurement of Lyapunov exponents. As a conclusion, a significant difference was not found in forecasting future events for the time series data which is deterministically chaotic, between a conventional forecasting model and a typical neural network model.

  • Although multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) present several advantages against other pattern recognition methods, MLP-based speaker verification systems suffer from slow enrollment speed caused by many background speakers to achieve a low verification error. To solve this problem, the quantitative discriminative cohort speakers (QnDCS) method, by introducing the cohort speakers method into the systems, reduced the number of background speakers required to enroll speakers. Although the QnDCS achieved the goal to some extent, the improvement rate for the enrolling speed was still unsatisfactory. To improve the enrolling speed, this paper proposes the qualitative DCS (QlDCS) by introducing a qualitative criterion to select less background speakers. An experiment for both methods is conducted to use the speaker verification system based on MLPs and continuants, and speech database. The results of the experiment show that the proposed QlDCS method enrolls speakers in two times shorter time than the QnDCS does over the online error backpropagation(EBP) method.

  • This research proposes a system for speaker independent Korean continuous speech recognition with 247 DDD area names using keyword spotting technique. The applied recognition algorithm is the Dynamic Programming Neural Network(DPNN) based on the integration of DP and multi-layer perceptron as model that solves time axis distortion and spectral pattern variation in the speech. To improve performance, we classify word model into keyword model and non-keyword model. We make an experiment on postprocessing procedure for the evaluation of system performance. Experiment results are as follows. The recognition rate of the isolated word is 93.45% in speaker dependent case. The recognition rate of the isolated word is 84.05% in speaker independent case. The recognition rate of simple dialogic sentence in keyword spotting experiment is 77.34% as speaker dependent, and 70.63% as speaker independent.

  • In this paper, we propose efficient total recognition system of handwritten and printed numerals for reducing the classification time. The proposed system consists of two-step neuroclassifier : Printed numerals classifier and handwritten numerals classifier. In the proposed scheme, the printed numerals classifier classifies the printed numerals rapidly with single MLP neural network by low-order feature vector and rejects handwritten numerals. The handwritten numerals classifier classifies the handwritten numerals which is rejected in printed numerals classifier with modularized cluster neural network by complex feature vector. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, handwritten numerals database of NIST and printed numerals database which include various fonts are used in the experiments. In case of using the proposed classifier, the overall classification time was reduced by 49.1% - 65.5% in comparison of the existent handwritten classifier.

  • Detecting faces in images with complex backgrounds is a difficult task. Our approach, which obtains state of the art results, is based on a generative neural network model: the Constrained Generative Model (CGM). To detect side view faces and to decrease the number of false alarms, a conditional mixture of networks is used. To decrease the computational time cost, a fast search algorithm is proposed. The level of performance reached, in terms of detection accuracy and processing time, allows to apply this detector to a real word application: the indexation of face images on the Web.
