  • In existing literature on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying communication systems, antenna selection is often implemented by maximizing the channel capacity or the output single-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient low-complexity antenna selection scheme for MIMO relaying communication systems. The proposed algorithm is based on beamforming and maximizing the Frobenius norm to jointly optimize the transmit power, number of active antennas, and antenna subsets at the source, relaying and destination. We maximize the energy efficiency between the link of source to relay and the link of relay to destination to obtain the maximum energy efficiency of the system, subject to the SNR constraint. Compared to existing antenna selection methods forMIMO relaying communication systems, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can save more power in term of energy efficiency, while having lower computational complexity.

  • In this paper, a selective multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) transmission scheme is proposed in dual-hop MIMO relaying systems, in which orthogonal space-time block code(OSTBC) transmission and transmit antenna selection(TxAS) transmission are selectively used. Assuming independent Rayleigh fading channels, the outage probability is analyzed for a decode-and-forward(DF) relaying system using the selective MIMO transmission scheme. Also, through numerical investigation, the outage performance for the DF relaying system using the selective MIMO transmission scheme is compared with that for the conventional DF relaying system using OSTBC or TxAS. Moreover, from the performance comparison, it is shown that the proposed scheme can reduce the system overhead without outage performance degradation.

  • In multi-hop communication systems, two-way relaying is one of the solutions to mitigate the spectral efficiency loss caused by a half-duplex transmission. In this paper, a simple two-way relaying scheme is proposed for two-hop two-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. In the proposed system, a base station and a relay station (RS), both equipped with two antennas, form a point-to-point MIMO channel, while the RS and two single-antenna mobile users form a point-to-multipoint multiuser (MU)-MIMO channel. Numerical examples show that the proposed system achieves a significant sum rate gain as compared to a one-way relaying system as the distance between a relay and the two users decreases. We also show that although we can expand the proposed scheme to more than two users, its performance gain as compared to that of one-way relaying decreases with an increase in the number of users.

  • For dual-hop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) decode-and-forward relaying systems, we propose a selective relaying scheme that uses orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) and transmit antenna selection with maximal-ratio combining (TAS/MRC) or vice versa at the first and second hops, respectively. The aim is to achieve an asymptotically identical performance to the dual-hop relaying system with only TAS/MRC, while requiring lower feedback overhead. In particular, we give the selection criteria based on the antenna configurations and the average channel powers for the first and second hops, assuming Rayleigh fading channels. Also, the numerical results are shown for the outage performance comparison between the dual-hop DF relaying systems with the proposed scheme, only TAS/MRC, and only OSTBC.

  • Up to now, many state-of-arts have been proposed for two-way relaying system with linear modulations. The performances of antenna selection (AS) at both transmit and relay nodes need to be investigated in some two-way relaying multiple-input multiple-output (TWRM) systems. In this paper, the goal is focused on the study of nonlinear modulations, i.e., continuous phase modulation (CPM) in TWRM systems. Firstly, the joint phase trellis are simplified by reversed Rimoldi processing so as to reduce the systems' complexity. Then the performances of joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) with CPM modulations in two-way relaying MIMO systems are analyzed. More exactly, the pair wise probability (PEP) is used to evaluate the error performance based on the CPM signal matrix, which is calculated in terms of Laurent expression. Since the channels subject to two terminal nodes share common antennas at relay node R in multiple-access scheme, we revise the JTRAS algorithm and compare it to existing algorithm via simulation. Finally, the error performances for various schemes of antenna selection are simulated and compared to the analysis in this paper.

  • The deployment of an incremental hybrid decode-amplify and forward relaying scheme is a promising and superior solution for cellular networks to meet ever-growing network traffic demands. However, the selection of a suitable relaying protocol based on the signal-to-noise ratio threshold is important in realizing an improved quality of service. In this paper, an incremental hybrid relaying protocol is proposed using polar codes. The proposed protocol achieves a better performance than existing turbo codes in terms of capacity. Simulation results show that the polar codes through an incremental hybrid decode-amplify-and-forward relay can provide a 38% gain when ${\gamma}_{th(1)}$ and ${\gamma}_{th(2)}$ are optimal. Further, the channel capacity is improved to 17.5 b/s/Hz and 23 b/s/Hz for $2{\times}2$ MIMO and $4{\times}4$ MIMO systems, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to achieve the optimal solution.

  • Selection-type relaying protocol, which is one of cooperative relaying protocols, provides low decoding complexity and improved system performance due to selection diversity. In this paper, we deal with linear precoding technique that minimize the error probability of cooperative MIMO system. Under the assumption that full channel state information is available at whole nodes, linear source and relay precoders, which minimize mean squared error of the estimated symbol vector, are proposed. Moreover, unlikely to the conventional selection-type relaying protocol using a fixed threshold signal-to-noise-ratio, new transmission link selection algorithm selects direct link or relay link as a transmission link, is introduced. Simulation results show that the proposed linear precoder with the transmission link selection algorithm outperforms the conventional precoders for two-hop relaying protocols or selection-type relaying protocols.

  • Under an imperfect channel estimation, a Device-to-Device (D2D) communication framework based on MIMO relay technology is presented. The model consists of a D2D pair equipped with M antennas and a relay equipped with N antennas as well as a cellular user equipped with M antennas. The outage probability under different relaying protocols (i.e. AF and DF protocol) with and without considering a direct link was derived. The actual and theoretical outage probability of the five links under different antenna numbers was emulated. The number of user antennas and channel estimation error was analyzed carefully to determine their impact on the outage probability of a system. The simulation verified the theory analyses and the results showed that MIMO relaying improves the D2D communication system performance.

  • In this paper, we consider a relaying system which employs a single relay in a wireless network with distributed sources and destinations. Here, all source, destination, and relay nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. For amplify-and-forward relay systems, we confirm the achievable sum rate through a joint multiple source precoders and a single relay filter design. To this end, we propose a new linear processing scheme in terms of maximizing the sum rate performance by applying a blockwise relaying method combined with geometric programming techniques. By allowing the global channel knowledge at the source nodes, we show that this joint design problem is formulated as a standard geometric program, which can guarantees a global optimal value under the modified sum rate criterion. Simulation results show that the proposed blockwise relaying scheme with the joint power allocation method provides substantial sum rate gain compared to the conventional schemes.

  • Exploiting multiple antennas at mobile devices is difficult due to limited size and power. In this paper, a distributed MIMO protocol achieving the capacity of conventinal MIMO systems is proposed and analyzed. For exploiting distributed MIMO features, Quantize-Map-and-Forward (QMF) scheme shows improved performance than Amplify-and-Forward (AF) scheme. Also, the protocol based on multiple access channel (MAC) is proposed to improve the multiplexing gain. We showed that sufficient condition of the number of slave nodes to achieve the gain of a MAC based protocol. Because the base station can support multiple clusters operating in distributed MIMO, the total cellular capacity can be extremely enhanced in proportional to the number of clusters.
