  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust interference mitigation technique based on a nullsteering multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) spatial division multiple access (SDMA) scheme for frequency sharing between IMT-advanced and fixed satellite service (FSS) in the 3400-4200 and 4500-4800 MHz bands. In the proposed scheme, the pre-existing precoding matrix for SDMA unitary precoded (UPC) MIMO proposed by the authors is modified to construct nulls in the spatial spectrum corresponding to the direction angles of the victim FSS earth station (ES). Furthermore, a numerical formula to calculate the power of the interference signal received at the FSS ES when IMT-Advanced base stations (BS) are operated with the interference mitigation technique is presented. This formula can be derived in closed form and is simply implemented with the help of simulation, resulting in significantly reduced time to obtain the solution. Finally, the frequency sharing results are analyzed in the co-channel and adjacent channel with respect to minimum separation distance and direction of FSS earth station (DOE). Simulation results indicate that the proposed mitigation scheme is highly efficient in terms of reducing the separation distance as well as robust against DOE estimation errors.

  • In this paper, we consider multiuser multi-input/multi-output antenna systems with zero-forcing receivers in downlink. In this case, to exploit multiuser diversity, spatial-division multiple access (SDMA) system allows to assign different users to a part of transmit antennas at the base station whereas spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) system assigns all antennas to single user's data stream. In this paper, we present analytical frameworks to evaluate performance of these systems. We first analyze the performance of these two systems by deriving closed-form expressions of achievable throughput. Numerical results show that the derived expressions are very tight. In addition, we approximate the capacity expression of SDM and SDMA systems and compare the SDM with the optimal case.

  • In this paper, coordinated space division multiple access(SDMA) technology is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference by using partial channel state information in cooperative wireless communications system with limited feedback. Each AT selects an optimal cluster transmission mode and sends it back to a cluster scheduler, and at the cluster scheduler, ATs are scheduled within a AT group with the identical cluster transmission mode, and the optimal transmission mode and the corresponding scheduled ATs are determined to maximize scheduling priority. Also, in order to enhance multiuser diversity gain, an extended transmission feedback method is proposed to feed back multiple preferred cluster transmission modes at each AT. It is shown that the proposed coordinated SDMA scheme outperforms existing non-coordinated SDMA schemes in terms of the average system throughput.

  • In recent years, one of the most remarkable 5G technologies is massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system which increases spectral efficiency by deploying a large number of transmit-antennas (eg. tens or hundreds transmit-antennas) at base station (BS). However, conventional massive MIMO system using single-polarized (SP) transmit-antennas increases the size of the transmit-array proportionally as the number of transmit-antennas increases. Hence, size reduction of large-scale transmit-array is one of the major concerns of massive MIMO system. To reduce the size of the transmit-array at BS, dual-polarized (DP) transmit-antenna can be the solution to halve the size of the transmit-array since one collocated DP transmit-antenna deploys vertical and horizontal transmit-antennas compared to SP transmit-antennas. Moreover, proposed DP massive MIMO system increases the spectral efficiency by not only in the space domain but also in the polarization domain whereas the conventional SP massive MIMO system increases the spectral efficiency by space domain only. In this paper, the comparative performance of DP and SP massive MIMO systems is analyzed by space division multiple access (SDMA) and space-polarization division multiple access (SPDMA) respectively. To analyze the performance of DP and SP massive MIMO systems, DP and SP spatial channel models (SCMs) are proposed which consider depolarized propagation channels between transmitter and receiver. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed 32 transmitter (Tx) DP massive MIMO system improves the spectral efficiency by about 91% for a large number of user equipments (UEs) compare to 32Tx SP massive MIMO system for identical size of the transmit-array.

  • In this paper, we propose an simplified successive minimum mean square error ($S^{2}MMSE$) algorithm that can simplify the computational complexity for precoding matrix generation in the successive minimum mean square error (SMMSE) precoding method, which is adopted as a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) precoding technique in the IST (information society technologies)-WINNER (wireless world initiative new radio) project. The original algorithm generates the precoding matrix by calculating all individual precoding vectors with each requiring its own MMSE nulling matrix, over all receive antennas for all users. In contrast, this proposed algorithm first calculates the MMSE nulling matrix for each user, and then calculates all precoding vectors for respective receive antennas of the corresponding user by using the identical MMSE nulling matrix, in which only a simple matrix-vector multiplication is required for each vector. Consequently, it can simplify significantly the computational complexity to generate a precoding matrix for SMMSE precoding.

  • In this paper, a coding algorithm is proposed for multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) systems to improve the reception performance in fading conditions without reducing the bandwidth efficiency. The space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme that is one of the commonly used for MU-MIMO systems is vulnerable to the fading. The space time block code (STBC) scheme that is used to overcome the fading has a disadvantage of reduced throughput. The proposed MU-MIMO system first encodes transmitted symbols by linear dispersion code (LDC) which is less vulnerable to the fading and increases the throughput in proportional to the number of transmit antennas. Then, the LDC coded symbols are pre-coded by the result of singular value decomposition (SVD) of the estimated channel gain. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme compared with the conventional algorithms by computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we introduce the concept of a subcarrier-based virtual multiple antennas (SV-MIMO) for OFDM cellular systems, where the multiple antenna techniques are performed on a set of subcarriers, not on the actual multiple antennas. The virtual multiple antenna system can support multiple users simultaneously as well as reduce inter-cell interference (ICI) form adjacent cells with a single antenna. Also, this technique is easily extended to multiple antenna environments. The virtual multiple antenna techniques can be divided into a virtual smart antenna technique and a virtual MIMO technique. Especially, this method effectively reduces ICI at cell boundary with frequency reuse factor equal to 1, and can support flexible resource allocation depending on the amount of interference. It is shown by simulation that the proposed method is superior to conventional method under the same condition of data transmission.

  • In this paper, we investigate the user scheduling, transmit beamforming, and receive beamforming of uplink space division multiple access (SDMA) systems where multiple users are allowed to transmit their signal to a base station (BS) using the same frequency band simultaneously. The BS performs a receive beamforming using the predetermined pseudo-random pattern and select users with a specific criterion. Especially, in this paper, we propose the threshold-based transmit power control, in which a user decrease its transmit power according if its generating interference to other users's signal is larger than a predetermined threshold. Assuming that the TDD system is used, the channel state information (CSI) can be obtained at each user from pilot signals from the BS. Simulation results show that the proposed technique significantly outperforms the existing user scheduling algorithms.

  • In this paper, we focus on the total transmission power minimization problem for downlink beamforming multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems while ensuring each user's QoS requirement. Although the linear integer programming (LIP) solution we formulate provides the performance upper bound of the margin adaptive (MA) optimization problem, it is hard to be implemented in practice due to its high computational complexity. By regarding each user's equivalent channel gain as approximate independent values and using iterative descent method, we present a heuristic MA resource allocation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm efficiently converges to the local optimum, which is very close to the performance of the optimal LIP solution. Compared with existing space division multiple access (SDMA) OFDM systems with or without adaptive resource allocation, the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvement by exploiting the frequency diversity and multi-user diversity in downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM systems.
