  • In modern society, damage caused by strong winds such as typhoons is expected to increase due to urbanization and global warming. In order to test the reinforcement performance of the newly developed window protection device, two-point force test and uniformly distributed load test were carried out on non-reinforced plate glass. It reinforcement performance of the window protection device was evaluated based on the flexural performance improvement. The analytical performance of the window protection device was evaluated by analysis using differential equations of elastic loading method and deflection curve and Midas-Gen. First, the analytical window protection device was evaluated by formulae derived using differential equations of elastic loading and deflection curve. The validity of the derived formulae investigated by comparing the maximum deflection of the central part of the plate with the experimental value and the theoretical value at maximum load. Then the results were compared with those by finite element FE method using Midas-Gen. Under the experimental conditions, with the window protection device, stress reduction effect up to 40% and deflection reduction up to 71.4% under the same load were obtained. It was also found that it is advantageous to perform the FE analysis using the plate element when the performance is evaluated because the error of FE analysis result using plate elements is far less than that using beam elements.

  • For the goal of the proposal for optimum position of offset outrigger system, a structural schematic design of 70 stories building was carried out, using the general structure analysis program of MIDAS-Gen. In this research, the primary factors of this analysis research were the shear wall stiffness, the frame stiffness, the outrigger stiffness, the stiffness of column linked in outrigger system, etc. To achieve the aim of this study, we analyzed and studied the lateral displacement in top level, the force distribution of outrigger, the existing model of optimal outrigger location, and so on. This paper proposed the optimal position of offset outrigger system. Furthermore it is considered that the study results can be useful in getting the structure engineering data for seeking the optimal position of offset outrigger in the tall building.

  • This study intended to analyze an influence of the structure elements on the optimal location for one-outrigger system in tall building by using MIDAS-Gen. In this investigation, the analysis parameters were the outrigger position and the stiffness of main structure elements such as shear walls, outrigger systems, exterior columns connected in outrigger system and frames not to be connected in outrigger system. For the objective of finding out the optimal location for one-outrigger system in high-rise building, we studied the lateral displacement in top level of 80 stories building. The results of this study indicated that the outrigger location and the stiffness of main structure elements such as shear walls, outrigger systems, exterior columns connected in outrigger system and frames not to be connected in outrigger system had an influence on the optimal location of one-outrigger system. In addition, it is showed that the research results can be very useful in obtaining the structure design data for looking for the optimal location of one-outrigger system in high-rise building.

  • A refined method of analysis which is called the Advanced Analysis has been introduced This method is to consider the intial member imperfection residual stress and second-order effects so as to estimate the overall behavior of steel frame accurately Based on the refined plastic hinge method that is more suitable and practical in design practice. the program RPH-2DF is coded using the log model which represents the moment-rotation relationship of connection. The validity of this program is examined by frame test data. Finally to investigate the difference between behaviors of rigid and semi-rigid frame. the 10-story frame analysis results designed by MIDAS-GEN v4.2.2 are compared with the results by RPH-2DF.

  • Based on the continuum approach, an investigation is made to get the forces and displacements of laterally loaded outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores, and to show the effect of stiffening outriggers on the behavior of the structure. From the condition that the rotation of the core at the outrigger level is matched with the rotation of the corresponding outrigger, the outrigger restraining moment is derived analytically. From this, the core moment diagram, the column axial forces, and the horizontal displacements of the structure may be determined. Comparisons with the results by the program MIDAS-GEN for the structural models, have shown that this analysis can give reasonably accurate results for outrigger-braced structures with a pair of coupled cores. And a lateral displacement at the top of the structure is influenced by the outrigger location than the core location. Although the formulae are accurate only for idealized outrigger braced structures, they have a useful practical purpose in providing a guide to the behavior, and for making approximate estimates of the forces and displacements, in practical outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores.

  • This research purposed to study a structural effect on curtailment of upper shear wall in frame-shear wall structures, using MIDAS-Gen. In this study, the analysis variables were the story number of curtailment of upper shear wall, change of column section in every 2 stories and change of shear wall thickness in every 2 stories. In order to analyse a structural effect on curtailment of upper shear wall in frame-shear wall structures, we studied the distribution of shear force and overturning moment according to curtailment of shear wall, the inflection point of shear wall from shear force/overturning moment and the lateral stiffness. The results of study proposed the quantitative influence that the curtailment of upper shear wall in frame-shear wall structures had on the structural performance such as lateral stiffness. Furthermore, it is verified that the results of study can be very helpful in catching the materials on the structure design for a reasonable frame-shear wall system.

  • This paper presents a matrix analysis to get the torsional behavior of core structures with torsional reinforcements. Based on simplified assumptions, formulae for the forces and displacements of cote structures subjected to three typical load cases, i.e. uniformly distributed torque, triangularly distributed torque and a concentrated torque at the top of the structure, are derived analytically. The behavior of the cote according to the variation of reinforcement locations is investigated to estimate the optimum locations of reinforcements to minimize the core rotations and bimoments. The results by the program MIDAS-GEN have shown that this analysis can give quite satisfactory results for structural models with torsional reinforcements. Although three dimensional analysis by computer has come within reach as a normal structural design procedure, its use as an optimization tool may not be desirable in view of the expense and time required. Formulae that we presented here can be used to estimate the torsional rotations and forces of practical cote structures at the preliminary design stages.

  • This paper presents dynamic behavior of double-layer barrelvault systems subjected to earthquake loadings. In order to investigate different seismic behaviors according to Time History Analysis (THA), six open angles were employed and different fundamental frequencies corresponding to each open angle were considered. A total of 24 double-layer structures were developed by using Midas Gen., which is a computer analysis program and then THA with three different earthquakes with 5% damping ratio was performed. This study investigated the characteristics of the dynamic response for X-, Y- and Z- directions, both subjected to the horizontal earthquake (H) and applied to the vertical earthquake (V) with respect to the each variable, which assumed to be important aspects for spatial structure. In order to examine the dynamic characteristics, the ratio of acceleration in specific nodes of barrelvaults was evaluated at the time with maximum response. The main purpose of this study is to obtain equations of the equivalent earthquake loading with respect to the barrelvault systems.
