  • This paper describes the electric properties of mica reinforced silicone composites with the parameter of curing condition of silicone resin, application amount of silane coupling agent to the mica paper and the mica wt% to the composite. Heat-resistant silicone resin and mica paper made of mica flakes are used to prepared the mica/silicone composite as matrix and filler, respectively. To improve the dielectric properties and interfacial adhesion between matrix and filler, silane coupling agent is applied on the mica paper. As for matrix, tan$\delta$ value of 30$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treated silicone resin is the lowest under 1%. The optimal wt% of coupling agent is 0.3% to the weight of mica paper. 80 wt% of mica as filler to the mica/silicone composite shows the best electric properties. And the mica reinforced silicone composite shows good high-frequency and mechanical tensile stress properties.

  • In this study, the mica used as a thermal-insulation material was modified with a silane coupling agent, octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), to improve its hydrophobicity. The modified mica was characterized using FT-IR spectrometer, water wettability test, and water contact angle measurement. The analysis exhibits that OTES for the modified mica sample was well bonded chemically and drastically enhanced the hydrophobicity. The reflectance observed as 73.9% (mica) and 86.4% (OTES/mica), respectively, for OTES/mica was improved about 12.5% before any modifications. Also the modified mica sample showed $7.2^{\circ}C$ decrease in the thermal-insulation performance of cool paints compared to that of using unmodified mica, indicating that the modification of mica with silane coupling agents could be effective in enhancing the thermal-insulation performance of the cool paint.

  • Background: A large number of diseases occur in association with specific HLA-B or-C alleles. Recently a new gene, termed maj or histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene A (MICA), has been identified in close proximity to HLA-B. The function of this gene is still unknown. However, it is structurally similar to HLA class I genes. MICA gene is polymorphic and is potentially associated with several diseases. Methods: To evaluate the association of MICA gene in Korean patients with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infections, Polymerase chain reaction-Sequence specific primer (PCR-SSP) was done for MICA alleles in the extracellular exons, and a microsatellite analysis for GCT repeat polymorphisms in the TM exon was also completed. Results: In 199 Korean healthy controls, 7 alleles were observed and the frequencies for each allele were MICA008 (44.7%), MICA0 10 (34.2%), MICA002 (31.7%), MICA004 (23.6%), MICA0 12 (2 1.6%), MICA009 (19.6%), and MICA007 (6.5%). When 65 HIV seropositive patients were analyzed, MICA007 allele frequency was significantly higher than in controls (15.4% vs 6.5 %, RR=2.6, p<0.04). In contrast, the frequencies of other MICA alleles and microsatellite alleles in the transmembrane region of MICA gene were not significantly different between HIV seropositive patients and controls. The tight linkage between MICA alleles in the extracellular exons and GCT repeat polymorphisms in the TM exon was observed as follows; MICA002/A9, MICA004/A6, MICA007/A4, MICA008/A5.1, MICA0 10/A5, and MICA0 12/A4 in both groups. No significant difference between patients and controls was observed in the haplotype frequencies of MICA alleles in the extracellular exons and GCT repeat polymorphisms in the TM exon. Conclusion: The data suggest that immune functions related with MICA gene may affect a HIV infections.

  • Alumina/mica and spinel/mica composites were fabricated by sintering of compacts containing 20 mass% fluoromica ($KMg_3AlSi_3O-{10}F_2$) glass and alumina or spinel. In both composites, mica precipitated as plate-like crystals at temperatures lower than $1300^{\circ}C$ and melted at $1300^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$. In alumina/mica composites, alumina and glass reacted to produce spinel, and the densification progressed by the solution-precipitation of alumina. Consequently, the glass composition changed and the mica did not precipitate at temperatures higher than $1400^{\circ}C$. However, mica precipitated after a reheating process. In spinel/mica composites, the glass composition did not change. After the mica phase melted, it recrystallized during slow cooling. The relative density reached the maximum at $1500^{\circ}C$ for alumina/mica and at $1300^{\circ}C$ spinel/mica composites, and decreased at further high temperatures.

  • This paper reported a study on the thermal, mechanical and electrical insulation properties of epoxy/mica composites. To investigate the effect of mica content, glass transition temperature, mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strength, and insulation breakdown properties for epoxy composites with various contents of mica. The effect of insulation thickness on insulation breakdown property was also studied. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased with increasing mica content, while elastic modulus increased as the mica content increased. AC insulation breakdown strength for all epoxy/mica composites was higher than that of neat epoxy and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was 14.4% improved. As was expected, insulation breakdown strength at $30^{\circ}C$ was far higher than that at $130^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that insulation breakdown strength was inversely proportion to insulation thickness.

  • This paper describes electrical resistivity, dielectric strength, thermal conductivity, thermal stability and tensile strength of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin or silicone rubber resin containing alumina powder. The mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin had higher electrical resistivity, dielectric strength and tensile strength than those of virgin mica sheet. Electrical resistivity of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin containing alumina increased with increasing the amount of alumina. However, dielectric strength and tensile strength of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin containing alumina decreased with increasing the amount of alumina. The mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin had lower thermal conductivity than that of virgin mica sheet. However, thermal conductivity of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin conatining alumina increased with increasing the amount of alumina. In the case of thermal stability, thermal degradation of virgin mica sheet and impregnated mica sheet with silicone rubber resin did not occur up to $1100^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Objective: Our aim was to investigation the roles of MHC class I chain-related gene A(MICA) and natural killer cell group 2D(NKG2D) in human renal cancer cells. Materials and Methods: The expression of membrane MICA (mMICA) on renal cells and NKG2D on NK cells were detected by flow cytometry (FCM); the content of sMICA were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the distribution of mMICA on renal tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry; the interaction between MICA and NKG2D was observed by antibody closed method. Results: Our results showed that the expression of mMICA in renal cancer tissues was significantly higher than in controls, where the soluble MICA was not expressed. Cytotoxic activity of NK cells was significantly reduced after exposure to NKG2D and MICA antibodies (P<0.05), and serum containing sMICA can obviously lower the function of NKG2D (P<0.05). Conclusions: The interaction of mMICA and NKG2D play important roles in mediation of cytotoxicity of NK cells in RCC. On the other hand, sMICA may mediate tumor immune escape through down- regulated NKG2D expression.

  • Objective: Major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related A (MICA) is a stress-inducible glycoprotein that can be shed as a soluble protein. This study was conducted to determine the expression of MICA in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and examine the clinical relevance of soluble MICA (sMICA) in this disease. Methods: Immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR analyses were performed to assess the expression of MICA in 48 pairs of RCC and adjacent normal renal tissues. Serum levels of sMICA were measured in 48 RCC patients, 12 patients with benign renal tumors, and 20 healthy individuals. The correlations between sMICA levels and clinicopathological parameters were analyzed and the diagnostic performance of sMICA in RCC was evaluated. Results: RCCs exhibited elevated expression of MICA compared to adjacent normal tissues. Serum concentrations of sMICA were significantly greater in RCC patients ($348.5{\pm}32.5pg/ml$) than those with benign disease ($289.3{\pm}30.4pg/ml$) and healthy controls ($168.4{\pm}43.2pg/ml$) and significantly correlated with advanced tumor stage, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, vascular invasion, and higher histological grade. Using a cut-off point of 250 pg/ml, sMICA demonstrated a specificity and sensitivity of 63.2% and 75.6%, respectively, in distinguishing between RCC and benign renal tumors. Conclusion: MICA expression is upregulated in RCC and increased serum sMICA levels predict aggressive tumor behavior. However, the applicability of sMICA alone is limited in distinguishing RCC from benign renal tumors.

  • This study is to establish the coating technique for synthetic mica and to prepare synthetic mica with the non-aqueous property. The surface coating of synthetic mica is prepared with stearic acid using the high speed stirrer. The characterizations for mica powders coated the stearic acid are carried out by the deposition test, XRD and SEM. The results of research could be coated the stearic acid on the mica by 1600 rpm/min at $70^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. From the observation of SEM was found that the non-aqueous property mica could obtained by mixture ratios for stearic acid and mica, the inner temperature and rotation speed of the stirrer but treated time be unrelated.

  • The experimental results using the X -ray technique, the position and structure of mica crystal are not observed the phase change of aging and sound specimen respectively. However, We could observe the intensity difference of crystal element in both atmospheres. The analysis of mica-epoxy materials by optical microscope are shown that the each surface of sound and aging specimens are different in both atmospheres Also, the experimental results have shown that the potassium ions of mica cristal are substituted by hydrogen ions at boundary area of mica-epoxy and/or mica-mica. On components made of mica, a potassium ion of big atomic radius, is replaced by hydrogen ion of small atomic radius. The voids are created by the difference of radius progressed by combined stresses. Through these phenomena, it has been proposed that the conductive layers made of potassium enable the voids to form and the cracks to create by high electric field.
