  • We report a method for preparing rare earth oxides ($Re_xO_y$) from the recycling process for spent Ni-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. This process first involves a leaching of spent Ni-MH powders with sulfuric acid at $90^{\circ}C$, resulting in rare earth precipitates (i.e., $NaRE(SO_4)_2{\cdot}H_2O$, RE = La, Ce, Nd), which are converted into rare earth oxides via two different approaches: i) simple heat treatment in air, and ii) metathesis reaction with NaOH at $70^{\circ}C$. Not only the morphological features but also the crystallographic structures of all products are systematically investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD); their thermal behaviors are also analyzed. In particular, XRD results show that some of the rare earth precipitates are converted into oxide form (such as $La_2O_3$, $Ce_2O_3$, and $Nd_2O_3$) with heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$; however, secondary peaks are also observed. On the other hand, rare earth oxides, RExOy can be successfully obtained after metathesis of rare earth precipitates, followed by heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air, along with a change of crystallographic structures, i.e., $NaRE(SO_4)_2{\cdot}H_2O{\rightarrow}RE(OH)_3{\rightarrow}RE_xO_y$.

  • The Network can be easily damaged in the mobile computing environment. Mobile Support Station (MSS) which supports the Mobile Host(MH) could also be unstable too. Therefore, when a critical error occurs the repairing cost can be high. For stable repair, the hand-off strategy should be considered to save the continuing message and checkpoint information, and to reduce the cost of network repair. In this paper, we propose the Switching Trickle(ST) strategy which reduces the repairing cost for the MH's mobility. ST strategy changes the way which stores the information in connection with the number of write events(r) that occur from the hands-off strategy. Accumulated cost by increased mobility has been simulated too. From the results of simulation, the proposed strategy has shown more cost effective than the conventional strategy. The proposed strategy also has shown very supportive in saving checkpoint and message log information stably.

  • By intergrating technologies for protable computers, radio communications, and computer networking, the Land Mobile Computer Network(LMCN) is supposed to overcome the time and space limitation of present computer communication network. However, because the MHs(mobile hosts) do move any time, the network connectivity is often changed causing temporarily duplicated lost, or out-of-sequenced message delivery as well as frequent communications for maintainning the network connectivity. Previous works solved the problems through message flooding, used also in multicasting, resulting in high communication cost(i.e., number of communication messages). In this paper, new protocols for efficient mobility management and multicasting are proposed. The protocols define location update, handover, and multicasting procedure of a MH over a hierarchical LMCN architecture. The protocol specification is presented, and it is shown that the communication cost of the new protocols is superior to the existing ones in terms of the communication cost.

  • An experiment was conducted using a [6, 6-$^2H$]glucose isotope dilution method to determine the effects of plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) on plasma glucose metabolism in sheep taken from a thermoneutral environment and exposed to a hot environment. The sheep were fed either mixed hay (MH) of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) at a 60:40 ratio or MH and plantain (PL) at a 9:1 ratio in a crossover design for each 23-day period. In both dietary treatments the metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein intake were designed to be isoenergetic and isoproteinous at around maintenance level. The sheep were taken from a thermoneutral environment ($20^{\circ}C$, 70% RH) and exposed to a hot environment ($28-30^{\circ}C$, 70% RH) for 5 days. The isotope dilution method using a single injection of [6, 6-$^2H$]glucose was performed on the $18^{th}$ day of the thermoneutral environment and on the $5^{th}$ day of heat exposure. Plasma glucose pool size was numerically lower (p = 0.26) during heat exposure on both dietary treatments, and numerically higher (p = 0.13) on the MH diet irrespective of environmental temperature. Plasma NEFA concentration (p = 0.01) and glucose turnover rate (p = 0.03) were decreased during heat exposure, but remained similar between diets. It could be concluded that, although no positive impact of plantain on glucose metabolism was found under the present experimental conditions (plantain constituted only 10% of basal diet), plantain herb is an alternative to MH for rearing sheep in both thermoneutral and hot environments.

  • This study was conducted to select plant growth regulators effective at ginseng berry set inhibition to help root growth in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). PGRs (ethephon, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide, coumarin) were applied to field grown 5-year-old Korean ginseng between one and two times, before and during bloom in 2009, 2010. The number of treatment was more effective in ginseng berry set inhibition when used two times compared with one time in GA 1,000 ppm, MH (5,000, 10,000 ppm), coumarin (5,000, 10,000 ppm) treatment. According to treatment period of plant growth regulator, ginseng berry set inhibition rate from 20days before flowering date to 5days after blooming was the highest in MH 5000 ppm showing 99.9% and the lowest in GA 100 ppm showing 32.8%. The spray treatments of Ethephon (50, 150 ppm) and MH (5,000, 10,000 ppm) from 20 days before the flowering bloom up to 5 days before, and coumarin (5,000, 10,000 ppm) from 20 days to 6 days and before blooming that induced the inhibitory effect more than 90% after 12 weeks. Considering ginseng berry set inhibition characteristics and treatment period ethephon and coumarin was important about applied period but, MH treatment appeared to effective ginseng berry set inhibition regardless of treatment period.

  • Ti-Mn based hydrogen storage alloy were modified by substituting alloying elements such as Zr, V and Ni in order to design a high capacity MH electrode for Ni/MH rechargeable battery. When V was substituted in Ti-Mn binary system, the crystal structure was maintained as $Cl_4$ Laves phase at a composition of $Ti_{0.2}V_{0.4}Mn_{0.4}$ and $Ti_{0.4}V_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}$ and equilibrium pressure decreased below 1 atm without decreasing hydrogen storage capacity considerably. It was found that Ni should be included in Ti-V-Mn alloy in order to hydrogenate it electrochemically in KOH electrolyte. But substitution of Ni for Mn in Ti-V-Mn system caused the increase of equilibrium pressure above 1atm and decrease of hydrogen storage capacity. Zr was able to increase the reversible hydrogen storage capacity of Ti-V-Mn-Ni alloy without considerable change of hydrogenation properties. The electrochemical discharge capacity of Ti-Zr-V-Mn-Ni system were in the range of 350 - 464mAh/g and among them $Ti_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}V_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}Ni_{1.0}$ alloy had $Cl_4$ Laves single phase and very high electrochemical discharge capacity of 464mAh/g.

  • We report that mycoplasma organisms from lung tissues of slaughter pigs were identified to genes fragments with references use of nested-PCR technique(nPCR). Seven strains of mycoplasma species were isolated from 70 lung tissues. The organisms were detected by in vitro amplification of 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes. Nucleotide sequences of the spacer between 16S and 23S in the ribosomal RNA operons of mycoplasma were identified by the analysis of products from the nested PCR. Four common PCR primers, MhF1, MhF2 MhR1 and MhR2, were designed by analysis between these sequences by first amplified with F1, R1 and second with F2, R2, respectively. Specific amplification of the spacer region for reference strains of M. hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis, M. flocculare were confirmed by first round of PCR in which the traduced fragments of 690bp, 460bp, 630bp. But amplications of second round was changed to 240bp, 210bp, 230bp, respectively. Three different strains (M. hyopneumoniae:4, M. hyorhinis:2, M. flocculare:1) were detected by the nested-PCR technique. The results suggest that the detection of swine mycoplasma by n-PCR can be analyzed the nucleotide sequences between rRNA operons and homology study.
