  • Background: Peripheral nerve injury leads to neuropathic pain, including mechanical hyperalgesia (MH). Nerve discharges produced by an injury to the primary afferents cause the release of glutamate from both central and peripheral terminals. While the role of centrally released glutamate in MH has been well studied, relatively little is known about its peripheral role. This study was carried out to determine if the peripherally conducting nerve impulses and peripheral glutamate receptors contribute to the generation of neuropathic pain. Methods: Rats that had previously received a left L5 dorsal rhizotomy were subjected to a spinal nerve lesion (SNL) or brief electrical stimulation (ES, 4 Hz pulses for 5 min) of the left L5 spinal nerve. The paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) to von Frey filaments was measured. The effects of an intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of a glutamate receptor (GluR) antagonist or agonist on the changes in the SNL- or ES-produced PWT was investigated. Results: SNL produced MH, as evidenced by decrease in the PWT, which lasted for more than 42 days. ES also produced MH lasting for 7 days. MK-801 (NMDAR antagonist), DL-AP3 (group-I mGluR antagonist), and APDC (group-II mGluR agonist) delayed the onset of MH when an i.pl. injection was given before SNL. The same application blocked the onset of ES-induced MH. NBQX (AMPA receptor antagonist) had no effect on either the SNL- or ES-induced onset of MH. When drugs were given after SNL or ES, MK-801 reversed the MH, whereas NBQX, DL-AP3, and APDC had no effect. Conclusions: Peripherally conducting impulses play an important role in the generation of neuropathic pain, which is mediated by the peripheral glutamate receptors.

  • In this study, soy milk jellys with medicinal herbs (MH) composites showing cognitive effects were prepared and their characteristics were examined. Eight kinds of medicinal herbs were extracted with hot water and added to soy milk based on their contents. Medicinal herbs showed cognitive effects, namely promoting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition. In the preparation of soy milk jellys containing MH extracts of various contents (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%), pH of all groups significantly (p<0.05) decreased with increasing MH extracts compared to the control group. The brix of the soy milk jellys was the highest in the 5% content of MH extracts among all groups. The "a" and "b" values of soy milk jellys increased with the content of MH extracts, while the "L" value decreased adding to the content of MH extracts compared to the control. The hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of soy milk jellys were improved the most by the addition of 15~20% MH extracts, while the fracturability, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, and resilience of soy milk jelly was not significantly different (p<0.05) among all groups. Through a sensory evaluation, it was revealed that the taste, texture, overall preference, flavor, and sweetness of soy milk jellys was not significantly different (p<0.05) among all groups. Therefore, since the addition of 20% MH extracts did not significantly alter the sensory evaluation, it can usually be adjusted to make soy milk jellys with cognitive effects.

  • Plant growth was greatly affected by the spectral distribution and light intensity of artificial lighting sources. In this study, the spectral characteristics of high power sodium (HPS) lamps and metal halide (MH) lamps produced by three different manufacturers were measured. Even though the spectral distribution of HPS lamps with lamp wattage of 250 W and 400 W was very similar, but the spectral light intensity by the manufacturers was different. Difference in the spectral light intensity of MH lamps by the manufacturers was increased with the increasing lamps wattage. Light intensity at the region of blue (B), green (G), red (R) and far-red (FR) light of HPS and MH lamps was also analyzed. HPS lamps showed the light intensity in order of R, FR, B and G light. The ratio of G, B, R and FR to photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of HPS lamps with the lamp wattage of 250 W was 3.0-3.2%, 5.5-5.9%, 17.3-19.2% and 6.5-7.8%, respectively. For MH lamps, it showed the light intensity in order of R, FR, B, and G. The ratio of B, G, R, and FR to PPF of MH lamps with 250 W was 14.0-15.5%, 22.6-27.5%, 7.5-9.5% and 2.7-4.2%, respectively. HPS and MH lamps with 400 W had a relatively smaller ratio of R and FR to PPF than those with 250 W. HPS lamps showed that the ratio of light intensity of B and FR to R was 0.15-0.28 and 0.36-0.4, respectively. For MH lamps, the ratio of light intensity of B and FR to R was 1.26-2.72 and 0.27-0.56, respectively. From these results, it was concluded that the portion of blue light of MH lamps was higher than those of HPS lamps.

  • Recent seismic surveys have shown that the presence of methane hydrate (MH) in sediments has significant influence on seismic attenuation. I have used vertical seismic profile (VSP) data from a Nankai Trough exploratory well, offshore Tokai in central Japan, to estimate compressional attenuation in MH-bearing sediments at seismic frequencies of 30-110 Hz. The use of two different measurement methods (spectral ratio and centroid frequency shift methods) provides an opportunity to validate the attenuation measurements. The sensitivity of attenuation analyses to different depth intervals, borehole irregularities, and different frequency ranges was also examined to validate the stability of attenuation estimation. I found no significant compressional attenuation in MH-bearing sediments at seismic frequencies. Macroscopically, the peaks of highest attenuation in the seismic frequency range correspond to low-saturation gas zones. In contrast, high compressional attenuation zones in the sonic frequency range (10-20 kHz) are associated with the presence of methane hydrates at the same well locations. Thus, this study demonstrated the frequency-dependence of attenuation in MH-bearing sediments; MH-bearing sediments cause attenuation in the sonic frequency range rather than the seismic frequency range As a possible reason why seismic frequencies in the 30-110 Hz range were not affected in MH-bearing sediments, I point out the effect of thin layering of MH-bearing zones.

  • When an EV is parked for a long period time, the battery capacity naturally decreases due to selfdischarge. Therefore, this effect must be considered for the accurate measurement of the state of charge of EV battery. Battery selfdischarge simulations using the design of experiments among computer simulation methods are compared with experimental data for Ni/MH batteries for electric vehicles. The motivation is to predict the selfdischarge rate of the battery for electric vehicle at all temperature conditions and standing time when electric vehicle could be operated. We developed a general equation representing the seudischarge rate of the electric vehicle battery using design of experiments, and the equation is determined by temperature and standing time of the battery. We selected Ni/MH battery, 12 V-95 Ah, for pure electric vehicle for this study. ID develop the equation using design of experiments we selected temperature range of $-20^{\circ}~30^{\circ}C$ and standing time of 1 day$\~15$ days. We conducted several selfdischarge tests of Ni/MH battery to verify the integrity of the equation. The results showed that the computation values were in good agreement with experimental data.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental lighting of low light intensities on growth and yield of rose 'Vital' in a forcing culture. Metal halide lamp (MH), High pressure sodium lamp (HSP), and MH+HSP were used as the light sources, and they were set up at a $310\;cm{\times}450\;cm$ interval and at 120cm above the culture beds. Light intensity at 1m point distance from supplemental lighting sources was $32{\sim}34\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Days to the 1st and 2nd harvests decreased by $5{\sim}8$ and $3{\sim}5$days, respectively in supplemental lighting treatment as compared to the control. Days to harvesting was the shortest in MH+HPS treatment, followed by BPS and MH, although there was no significant difference between HPS and MH treatments. The growth was better and incidence of blind shooting decreased by $5{\sim}7%$ in supplemental lighting treatments than the control, increasing marketable cut flowers. The incidence of blind shoot was the lowest in MH+BPS treatment, and there were no significant difference between MH and BPS treatments. In conclusion, supplemental lighting of low light intensities was effective in reducing days to flowering and reduced occurrence of blind shoots.

  • Zero Energy Multi-House(ZeMH) signifies a residential building which can be self sufficient with just new and renewable energy resources without the aid of any existing fossil fuel. For success of ZeMH, various innovative energy technologies Including passive and active systems should be well integrated with a systematic design approach. The first step for ZeMH is definitely to minimize the conventional heating and cooling loads over 50% with major energy conservation measure and passive solar features which are mainly related to building design components such as super-insulation, super window, including infiltration and ventilation issues. The purpose of this study is to analyze the thermal effect of various building design components in the early design of ZeMH. The process of the study is presented in the following. 1) selection reference model for simulation 2) verification of reference model with computer simulation program(ESP-r 9.0). 3) analysis of effect according to insulation-thickness, kinds of windows, rate of infiltration. and The simulation results indicate that almost 50% savings of conventional heating load in multi-house can be achieved with the optimum design of building components such as super insulation, super window, infiltration, ventilation.

  • Forty-two outbred female Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 145 g were used to study the effects of a beta-agonist, cimaterol, on growth, body composition and urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine (MH) at 3, 6 and 18 d. Cimaterol (CIM) was administered in the feed at 10 mg/kg. The growth promoting effect of CIM was most evident during the initial part of the feeding period, followed by a gradual decrease in the magnitude of the response with no significant effect at 18 d. The action of CIM was confined to skeletal and cardiac muscles with no stimulating effect on other organs. The amount of urine excretion and urinary MH excretion was reduced (p<.01) at 3 d in the CIM group. No difference was found at 6 d, followed by an increased urine excretion (p<.05) and MH excretion (p<.01) at 18 d. An inverse relationship between growth rate and urinary MH excretion suggested that the increased growth rate of CIM-fed rats during the initial part of the feeding period is primarily attributed to the decreased protein degradation rate. It was further suggested that both fractional synthesis rate and fractional degradation rate increased during the later part of the feeding period.

  • HID(high intensity discharge)lamps include high pressure mercury lamp, high pressure sodium lamp and metal halide lamp. Metal halide lamps have been considered to be one of the most erective light sources. These lamps have good efficiency, good color rendering and good focusing capability. The objective of this research is to alum on the metal halide lamp(MH70W) by the developed electronic ballast with free voltage input(AC 100∼277V). The developed electronic ballast consists of a free voltage input converter, a flyback converter & half-bridge inverter, ignitor & protector and control1er. Experimental results show that developed electronic ballast turns on the metal halide lamp(MH70W) with free voltage input(AC 100∼277V) very well.
