  • The force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K is measured and analyzed numerically. Both values are compared, and the difference between them is discussed. The forces, acting on a superconducting disk (thickness:1[mm], diameter:12[mm]) in an axially-symmetric magnetic field produced by a solenoid or a permanent magnet ring, are measured at 77K. The disk is an YBCO high Tc superconductor. The discrete surface current method(DSCM) is formalized for an axially-symmetric magnetic field. The forces of the superconducting disk in the magnetic field are analyzed using the DSCM, assuming that the disk is a perfect diamagnetic body. When the bottom side of the disk is separated 8[mm] from the top side of the solenoid, and the magnetic field applied on the center of the bottom side of the disk is 96[G], the measured value and the calculated value of the force are 96 and 496[mgf], respectively. The difference between them is caused by a non-perfect diamagnetism of the high Tc superconductor at 77K. It is proposed that a real force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K can be estimated on the basis of a measured magnetic susceptibility of the high Tc superconductor at 77K and a calculated force of a perfect diamagnetic body.

  • Ochratoxin A (OA) is a potent mycotoxin causing considerable health hazard and economic loss- e,i. OA is of concern as it is hepato-nephrotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic to a great variety of animals. LDso of crude OA was 8.5 mgf kg.b.w., i.p. The clinical symptoms, mortalities and necropsy were recorded in rats injected with OA (LD5o, i.p.) during 10 days of daily treatment. Ginseng treatments (20 mg 1 kg. b.w., i.p.) : before, mixed with, or after OA dose, completely prevented the mortality in rats. OA-treated animals showed microcytic normochromic anaemia, lucocytosis, hypoproteinaemia and elevation of serum ALT, AST, AP, urea, and creatinine values. These findings were declined near the normal levels when ginseng injected with OA. OA (115 LDso) induced chromosomal aberrations (65.66%) compared to the control. When ginseng given 10 min before OA injection, chromosomal aberrations were reduced to be 31.66% compared to OA-treated animals. In conclusion: ginseng has a protective effect against ochratoxicosis, it has anti-genotoxic activity and it can repair the chromosomal damage induced by ochratoxin A. • This paper is concerned with the development of a micro tensile testing machine for optically functional materials such as single or poly crystalline silicon and nickel film. This micro tensile tester has been developed for testing various types of materials and dimensions. PZT type actuation is utilized for precise displacement control. The specifications of the PZT actuated micro tensile testers developed are as follows: the volumetric size of the tester is desktop type of 710mm' 200mm' 270mm; the maximum load capacity and the load resolution in this system are IKgf and 0.0152mgf respectively and; the full stroke and the stoke resolution of the PZT actuator are $1000{\mu}m$ and 10nm respectively. Special automatic specimen installing and setting equipment is applied in order to prevent unexpected deformation and misalignment of specimens during handling of specimens for testing. Nonlinearity of the PZT actuator is compensated to linear control input by an inverse compensation method that is proposed in this paper. The strain data is obtained by ISDG method that uses the laser interference phenomenon. To test the reliance of this micro tensile testing machine, a $200{\mu}m$ thickness nickel thin film and SCS (Single Crystalline Silicon) material that is made with the MEMS fabrication process are used.

  • Objectives : This study estimated antioxidant effects of the moxi with ginger tar (MGT) ; chemical combustion products produced by moxibustion with ginger during combustion. Methods : To do this aim, we investigated total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, SOD (superoxide dismutase) scavenging activity, ABTS (2.2-azino-bis-3-erthylbenzo-thiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) & DPPH(2,2-Dipheny1-1 -picryl-hydrazyl) radical's scavenging ability of MGT. Results : Total polyphenol contents of MGT was $7.8{\pm}0.09$ mg/g in 10 mg/ml, SOD activity was $42.51{\pm}3.39%$ in 200 ug/ml, DPPH radical scavenging effect of MGT was $83.24{\pm}0.01%$ in 200 ug/ml and ABTS radical scavenging effect was $41.88{\pm}0.16%$ in 200 ug/ml. Conclusions : In this study, the effects of moxi with ginger could be induced by not only heating stimulus on acupoints but also chemical stimulus produced during combustion of moxibustion, MGF. The advanced study about biological mechanism through meridian system, skin aging, and inflammation on MGT will be required.

  • Singeing has always been equated with meat color alteration through lipid oxidation and microbial population. Singeing method has always been employed far removing duck feathers, however, the effect of singeing on storage characteristic of duck meat has not been investigated extensively. The study was therefore, designed to Investigate the effect of singeing on duck meat during storage extensively. For the purpose, study was categorized into three groups namely A, B, and C, representing 0, 50 and 70 seconds of singeing time. Singeing was performed on 100 birds in each group, however, only 20 singed birds from each treatment groups were further selected to analyse them subsequently during storage. Analysis revealed that with 70 seconds singeing time drip loss was significantly (p<0.05) higher at $6mgf/cm^2$ compared to 50 seconds of singeing. With 70 seconds treatment breast meat apparently appeared black, where as with 50 seconds treatment no change was observed. Breast showed low redness with more duration of treatment compared to less treatment duration. Yellowness increased, springiness declined and no change was observed in cohesiveness and chewiness with high treatment time. There was increase in the TBARS and VBN, freshness did not change for first 5 days, however, K values started to increase later on indicated decline in freshness. Conclusively, it was inferred from the study that 50 seconds singeing does not make much alternation in the quantitative traits and at the same time maintains the microbial level under permissible limit.

  • This study was performed to investigate the antiulcer effects of Opuntia dillenii Haw. on the stomach ulcer induced by restraint and water-immersion stress in rats. For this experiment, 48 male Sprague-Dawley strain were used. The experimental groups were divided into four: a control (C) and 3 Opuntia dillenii Haw. treatment groups (E-1, E-2, E-3). Each dose of Opuntia dillenii Haw. was 30 mg/kg bw (E-1), 60 mgfKg bw (E-2) and 120 mg/kg bw (E-3). The rats were allocated to each group by 12 and observed for 4 weeks. The results were as following: 1. The stomach surface pH in each group showed no significant difference, but the values of Opuntia dillenii Haw. treatment groups were higher than the value of the control group. 2. The gastric wall mucus was increased in all Opuntia dillenii Haw. treatment groups compared with the control group. Especially in E-1 difference was higher (p<0.05) and in E-2 difference was significantly higher (p<0.01). 3. At shear rate 11.25, 45.0, 90.0, $225\;sec^{-1}$, whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity were measured. Most of the values of Opuntia dillenii Haw. treatment groups were low compared with that of the control group. At shear rate 90.0, $225\;sec^{-1}$ the values of whole blood viscosity in E-1 were significantly low (p<0.05) and at shear rate 11.25, $45.0\;sec^{-1}$, more significant (p<0.01). At shear rate 11.25, 45.0, 90.0, $225\;sec^{-1}$ the values of whole blood viscosity in E-2 were significantly low (p<0.01). At shear rate $90.0\;sec^{-1}$ the value of plasma viscosity in E-1 was significantly low (p<0.05) and at shear rate 90.0, $225\;sec^{-1}$ the values of plasma viscosity in E-2 we resignificantly low (p<0.01). 4. Less severe ulcers were obsered in Opuntia dillenii Haw. treatment groups than in the control group. Especially E-1 groups tissues had only slight ulcers and necrosis of tissue was not observed in this group. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the oral administratio-n of Opuntia dillenii Haw. results in protection of stomach ulcer by stimulating the secretion of gastric mucus and improving the gastric mucosal microcirculation.
