  • A Schottky type GaN ultraviolet photodetector with a mesa structure was fabricated by depositing an Al ohmic contact on an $n^+$-GaN layer and a Pt Schottky contact on a GaN layer. The undoped GaN(0.5um)/$n^-$-GaN(0.1 um)/$n^+$-GaN(1.5 um) multi-layer structure was grown on a sapphire substrate using MOCVD. The Schottky contact properties were characterized for different passivation conditions. The leakage current of the fabricated Schottky diode was 2 nA at a reverse voltage of 5V. Plus the photocurrent was 120uA using a hydrargyrum lamp with an optical power of 1mW at a wavelength of 365 nm. The diode exhibited an ultraviolet-visible rejection ratio of $10^2$.

  • 6H-SiC UV photodiodes with $p^+$/n/n mesa structure were fabricated. The photocurrents of the photodiodes were measured in the wavelength range of 200~600 nm. The photocurrents were sensitive to ultraviolet radiation of 200~500 nm, and come to the maximum value at 260 nm. The quantum efficiency was calculated by using the diffusion model of minority carriers, and compared with the distribution of the photocurrent measured as a function of wavelength each other. The photocurrents of the 6H-SiC photodiode were explained by the diffusion model of the minority carriers which contained the optical absorption of the depletion region as well as the other layers.

  • We have measured the transport properties of $Bi_2$$Sr_2$$CaCu_2$$O_{8+d}$ (BSCCO) intrinsic Josephson junction mesa. Transport measurements with current flow along the c-axis, perpendicular to the layer of mesa showed multi-branch structures on the current-voltage characteristics. For single intrinsic junctions, the microwave radiation appears in the form of three different modes of oscillations, which include Josephson emission, nonequilibrium broad emission and sharp coherent microwave emission. Mutual phase interactions between two-mesas structures of BSCCO intrinsic Josephson junctions were studied. The results were explained within the framework of the Josephson plasma excitation model due to quasiparticle injection.n.

  • We have measured I-V characteristics of Bi$_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+{\delta}}$ mesa containing a small number of intrinsic stacked Josephson junctions in a magnetic field. We fabricated mesa with an area of 40${\times}$40 ${\mu}$m$^2$ containing 3${\sim}$20 intrinsic junctions. We applied magnetic field perpendicular to He CuO$_2$ planes up to 5T. We observed flux-flow branches and flux-flow steps in the I-V characteristics which might be due to collective motion of Josephson vortices in the long junction limit. In a parallel field, critical current I$_c$ varies as I$_c$(B) ${\sim}$ exp(-B/B$_0$), where B$_0$ is about 2T, which is consistent with the theoretical model. DC and AC intrinsic Josephson effects are also discussed.

  • This research investigated the motivation and interests of a sample of predominately-underrepresented populations to better understand whether informal STEM learning experiences offer support for developing STEM identities. A valid and reliable three-section self-reporting survey was administered to 169 secondary students as the primary data source. Identity was used as a theoretical lens along with descriptive statistics to reveal students' perceived benefits of the informal STEM learning experience, a Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program in the western U.S., for improving their understanding of science, mathematics, and engineering concepts, increasing their interest in science, mathematics, and engineering careers, and increasing their belief of the importance of these STEM disciplines. In summary, the findings emerging, considered alongside current identity research, suggest that informal STEM learning experiences offer students from underrepresented STEM populations the space needed for successful STEM identity bids, either for future career pursuits or participation in a STEM literate populace as a non-STEM professional societal member.

  • Using the Lagrangian explicit time-integration finite element code NET3D which can treat three-dimensional high-velocity impact problems, oblique penetration processes of long rod projectile with yaw against thin plate are simulated. Through the comparison of simulation result with experimental result and other code's computational result, the adaptability and accuracy of NET3D is evaluated under the complex situation in which yaw angle and oblique angle exist simultaneously. Main research contents to be handled in this paper include the followings. First, the accuracy and efficiency estimation of NET3D code result obtained from the oblique penetration simulations of long rod projectile with yaw against thin plate. Second, the effect of increasing impact velocity. Third, the effect of initial yaw for the spaced-plate target. Residual velocities, residual lengths, angular velocities, and final deformed configurations obtained from the NET3D computations are compared with the experimental results and other code's computational results such as Eulerian code MESA and Lagrangian code EPIC. As a result of comparisons, it has been found that NET3D code is superior to EPIC code and MESA code in the prediction capability of residual velocity and residual length of penetrator. The key features obtained from the experiment can be successfully reproduced through NET3D simulations. Throughout the study, the applicability and accuracy of NET3D as a metallic armor system design tool is verified.

  • We investigate the evolutionary properties of red supergiant stars (RSGs), using stellar evolution model of Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). In this study, we calculate models with mass range of 9-39M_sun and several different convection parameters (e.g. mixing length, overshooting, and semiconvection) at SMC, LMC, Milky Way, and M31 metallicities. We compare the calculated evolutionary tracks with observed RSGs in SMC, LMC, Milky Way and M31, and discuss appropriate input physical parameters in model calculation. We find that a larger mixing length parameter is necessary for M31 metallicity to fit the positions of RSGs in H-R diagram, compared to lower metallicity environments. Theoretically predicted numbers of yellow supergiant stars (YSGs) are also compared with the observed population. We find that Ledoux models with semiconvection can better explain the number of YSGs. Finally, we investigate the final radius, final star mass, and final hydrogen envelope mass of RSGs and discussed the their properties as type II-P supernova progenitors.

  • Recently, the multimedia and high speed telecommunication systems needs a high frequency and high stability oscillator. The VCXO(voltage controlled -crystal oscillator) have continually downsized to gratify a thin and small size of the telecommunication systems. In his paper, we have developed the small ceramic PECL(positive emitter-coupled logic) VCXO of the 5×7 mm size for gratifying the requested specifications from user, and then use the multilayer ceramic SMD(surface mounted device) package technology. The ceramic SMD PECL VCXO is operating at the 3.3 Voltage and have the frequency range of 120MHz~180MHz. The Q factor is over 5K and it has the low jitter characteristics of 3.5 ps and low phase noise.

  • Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of given design variables and chance them to get a bettor design. Even though commercial simulation codes are used, the computational time and cost remains non-trivial. Therefore, malty researchers have used a mesa model made by sampling data through simulation. In this paper, four mesa-models for each index group such as ride comfort, derailment Quotient, unloading radio and stability index, are constructed by use of neural network. After these meta models are constructed, multi-objective optimization are achieved by using the differential evolution. This paper shows that the optimization of design variables using the neural network model is very efficient to solve the complex optimization Problem.
