  • Organochlorine pesticide residues continue to remain as a major environmental threat worldwide. Lindane is an organochlorine pesticide widely used as an acaricide in medicine and agriculture. In the present study, a new lindane-degrading yeast strain, Pseudozyma VITJzN01, was identified as a copious producer of glycolipid biosurfactant. The glycolipid structure and type were elucidated by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy, and GC-MS analysis. The surface activity and stability of the glycolipid was analyzed. The glycolipids, characterized as mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs), exhibited excellent surface active properties and the surface tension of water was reduced to 29 mN/m. The glycolipid was stable over a wide range of pH, temperature, and salinity, showing a very low CMC of 25 mg/l. Bio-microemulsion of olive oil-in-water (O/W) was prepared using the purified biosurfactant without addition of any synthetic cosurfactants, for lindane solubilization and enhanced degradation assay in liquid and soil slurry. The O/W bio-microemulsions enhanced the solubility of lindane up to 40-folds. Degradation of lindane (700 mg/l) by VITJzN01 in liquid medium amended with bio-microemulsions was found to be enhanced by 36% in 2 days, compared with degradation in 12 days in the absence of bio-microemulsions. Lindane-spiked soil slurry incubated with bio-microemulsions also showed 20-40% enhanced degradation compared with the treatment with glycolipids or yeast alone. This is the first report on lindane degradation by Pseudozyma sp., and application of bio-microemulsions for enhanced lindane degradation. MEL-stabilized bio-microemulsions can serve as a potential tool for enhanced remediation of diverse lindane-contaminated environments.

  • Gyeongoggo is first described in the Collected Prescription by Hong Family in the Song Dynasty in China. It is composed of Radix Rehmnniae, Panax ginseng, Poria cocos, and Mel. Its main efficacy is to treat weakness of primordial essence of body and dry cough, and to invigorate qi and replenish yin principle. It is one of the most important prescriptions that people have been using for a long time. We studied the documents recorded in the medical classics and comprehended the following results. Gyeongoggo has efficacy to keep a person healthy and live long age, to treat amnesia and dizziness from brain weakness, to strengthen muscle and bone by improving function of stomach and colon, to improve a person's memory and judgement, to invigorate brain weakness, and, to treat tuberculosis and lung cancer. The longer a person take it, the better it is for one's health and meditation. When it is made, it is important to mix four components up, to boil it with an oak tree for three days and nights, and then to add water from a well to reduce heat for a full day, and to boil up again for a full day to mature fully. As gyeongoggo is acquired not only by the full heart of a manufacturer but also the sympathy of nature, it is important to choose a clean place to make and keep. When it is taken, it is proper to take it with warm water or liquors. And when it is made, we came to know that it is possible to make gyeongoggo with special efficacy by adding one to three more components.

  • We propose the computation reduction method of real root method that is mainly used in the CELP (Code Excited Linear Prediction) vocoder. The real root method is that if polynomial equations have the real roots, we are able to find those and transform them into LSP. However, this method takes much time to compute, because the root searching is processed sequentially in frequency region. In this paper, to reduce the computation time of real root, we compare the real root method with two methods. In first method, we use the mal scale of searching frequency region that is linear below 1 kHz and logarithmic above. In second method, The searching frequency region and searching interval are ordered by each coefficient's distribution. In order to compare real root method with proposed methods, we measured the following two. First, we compared the position of transformed LSP (Line Spectrum Pairs) parameters in the proposed methods with these of real root method. Second, we measured how long computation time is reduced. The experimental results of both methods that the searching time was reduced by about 47% in average without the change of LSP parameters.

  • This paper proposes a frame reliability weighting method to compensate for a time-selective noise that occurs at random positions of speech signal contaminating certain parts of the speech signal. Speech frames have different degrees of reliability and the reliability is proportional to SNR (signal-to noise ratio). While it is feasible to estimate frame Sl? by using the noise information from non-speech interval under a stationary noisy situation, it is difficult to obtain noise spectrum for a time-selective noise. Therefore, we used statistical models of clean speech for the estimation of the frame reliability. The proposed MFR (model-based frame reliability) approximates frame SNR values using filterbank energy vectors that are obtained by the inverse transformation of input MFCC (mal-frequency cepstral coefficient) vectors and mean vectors of a reference model. Experiments on various burnt noises revealed that the proposed method could represent the frame reliability effectively. We could improve the recognition performance by using MFR values as weighting factors at the likelihood calculation step.

  • This paper proposes an audio event detection method using Deep Neural Networks (DNN). The proposed method applies Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) to generate output probabilities of twenty audio events for each frame. Mel scale filter bank (FBANK) features are extracted from each frame, and its five consecutive frames are combined as one vector which is the input feature of the FFNN. The output layer of FFNN produces audio event probabilities for each input feature vector. More than five consecutive frames of which event probability exceeds threshold are detected as an audio event. An audio event continues until the event is detected within one second. The proposed method achieves as 71.8% accuracy for 20 classes of the UrbanSound8K and the BBC Sound FX dataset.

  • A bioassay-guided fractionation of the stem bark extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver (Eucommiaceae) led to the isolation of three iridoid constituents, genipin (1), geniposide (3), geniposidic acid (4) as well as $({\pm})-guaiacylglycerol$ (2) and fatty acid mixtures as active ingredients of the extract responsible for the antitumoral property. The EtOAc soluble part and BuOH soluble part of the extract demonstrated a potent inhibition on the proliferation of cultured human tumor cells such as A549 (non small cell lung), SK-OV-3 (ovary), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nerve system) and HCT-15 (colon) in vitro, whereas the remaining water soluble part exhibited a poor inhibition. The intensive investigation of the EtOAc soluble part and BuOH soluble part of the extract yielded genipin, guaiacylglycerol, geniposide, geniposidic acid and large amounts of fatty acid mixtures as active components.

  • There have been many studies on speaker normalization which aims to minimize the effects of speaker's vocal tract length on the recognition performance of the speaker independent speech recognition system. In this paper, we propose a simple vector quantizer based linear warping speaker normalization method based on the observation that the vector quantizer can be successfully used for speaker verification. For this purpose, we firstly generate an optimal codebook which will be used as the basis of the speaker normalization, and then the warping factor of the unknown speaker will be extracted by comparing the feature vectors and the codebook. Finally, the extracted warping factor is used to linearly warp the Mel scale filter bank adopted in the course of MFCC calculation. To test the performance of the proposed method, a series of recognition experiments are conducted on discrete HMM with thirteen mono-syllabic Korean number utterances. The results showed that about 29% of word error rate can be reduced, and that the proposed warping factor extraction method is useful due to its simplicity compared to other line search warping methods.

  • In order to purify 2-methylnaphthalene as main impurity included in naphthalene, SLE (solid-liquid equilibria) on two components system including naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene were measured and a layered melt crystallization has been studied. SLE in the present system is shown a simple eutectic mixture and the experimental results using DSC method is similar to the static method. Purity and yield of naphthalene in crystal depended mainly on the cooling rate: Increasing cooling rate, the purity of naphthalene in crystal increase, whereas the yield of that decrease. The effective distribution coefficient (Keff) as the degree of impurity removal was observed to decrease with decreasing of cooling rate. Therefore, the purity of naphthalene by melt crystallization can be enhanced to 5~7 %.

  • Several Prosapogenins and sapogenins obtained by acid hydrolysis or alkaline cleavage of Korean red ginseng saponins were separated and identified by spectral and physical methods. Some of these degradation products showed the cytotoxic activities against various cancer cell lines, that is, A549, SK - OV - 3, L121O, P388 and K562. The significant difference of activity between stereoisooers was not approved and the activity was inversely proportional to the number of sugars binding to sapogenins. It was clear that diol type prosapogenins and sapogenins were more cytotoxic than triol type ones.

  • Speech database built of phonemes is significant in the studies of speech recognition, speech synthesis and analysis, Phoneme, consist of voiced sounds and unvoiced ones, Though there are many feature differences in voiced and unvoiced sounds, the traditional algorithms for detecting the boundary between phonemes do not reflect on them and determine the boundary between phonemes by comparing parameters of current frame with those of previous frame in time domain, In this paper, we propose the assort algorithm, which is based on a block and reflecting upon the feature differences between voiced and unvoiced sounds for phoneme segmentation, The assort algorithm uses the distance measure based upon MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient) as a comparing spectrum measure, and uses the energy, zero crossing rate, spectral energy ratio, the formant frequency to separate voiced sounds from unvoiced sounds, N, the result of out experiment, the proposed system showed about 79 percents precision subject to the 3 or 4 syllables isolated words, and improved about 8 percents in the precision over the existing phonemes segmentation system.
