  • In product or process parameter design, the case of multiple performance characteristics appears more commonly than that of a single characteristic. Numerous methods have been developed to deal with such multi-characteristic parameter design (MCPD) problems. Among these, this paper considers three representative methods, which are respectively based on the desirability function (DF), grey relational analysis (GRA), and principal component analysis (PCA). These three methods are then used to solve the MCPD problems in ten case studies reported in the literature. The performance of each method is evaluated for various combinations of its algorithmic parameters and alternatives. Relative performances of the three methods are then compared in terms of the significance of a design parameter and the overall performance value corresponding to the compromise optimal design condition identified by each method. Although no method is significantly inferior to others for the data sets considered, the GRA-based and PCA-based methods perform slightly better than the DF-based method. Besides, for the PCA-based method, the compromise optimal design condition depends much on which alternative is adopted while, for the GRA-based method, it is almost independent of the algorithmic parameter, and therefore, the difficulty involved in selecting an appropriate algorithmic parameter value can be alleviated.

  • The study on the improvement of manufacturing process of RJ-4 liquid fuel that have high flash point, was carried out. In preparing of RJ-4 using commercially available MCPD, 1st, 2nd hydrogenation and isomerization reaction were enabled 1 step continuous process by combined use of heteropoly phosphoroustungstic cesium salt catalyst and 2nd stage-heat-controllable reactor. Also when heteropolyacid cesium salt was used as a isomerization catalyst instead of aluminum chloride, formation rate of exe-THDMCPD was higher, the catalyst could be easily separable from product and there was no production of waste acid, so this new reaction condition was confirmed as the environment friendly process.

  • The study on the hydrogenation and isomerization of unsaturated bicyclic hydrcarbon compounds using methylcyclopentadiene dimer (MCPD) was carried out. Exo compound was prepared through isomerization reaction after two hydrogenation reaction steps. In the first hydrogenation reaction which needs one mole of hydrogen, the formation rate of monomer was increased as dimer was decomposed at reaction temperature above $100^{\circ}C$. At first hydrogenation, DHDMCPD [dihydrodi(methylcyclopentadiene)] was formed and second hydrogenation was proceeded to produce THDMCPD [tetrahydrodi(methylcyclopentadiene)], the ratio of exo to endo THDMCPD was varied by the control of 2nd hydrogenation temperature. To improve the process, continuous 1st and 2nd hydrogenation conditions were established by using the 2nd stage heat controllable reactor. Also, catalytic activities were compared by the use of halogenized aluminum, metal halides and solid acids catalysts on the isomerization reaction from endo to exo THDMCPD.

  • 1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol(1,3-DCP), together with 3-monochloro-propane -1,2-diol(3-MCPD), is a well-known contaminant of acid-hydrolysed vegetable protein. 1,3-DCP has also been found to occur in a range of other foods and ingredients, most notable in soy sauce. The objective of the study was to determine the toxicity of the 1,3-DCP in the rat following oral administration for 13 weeks. (omitted)

  • This study was designed to evaluate the mutagenicity and the primary mutagenic mechanism of chloropropanols by using various genotypes of E. coli WP2, E. coli TK and E. coli GW series strains. Chloropropanols showed the low mutagenic activities in E. coli WP2s and WP2 establishing the following order; 2,3-DCP> 3-MCPD>1,3-DCP. As compared with E. coli WP2s, the decrease of mutagenic activity and the increase of survival rate in E. coli WP2 $(WP2s\;uvrA^+)$ suggest that DNA lesions produced by chloropropanols could be easily removed by excision-repair system. From the diminution of mutagenic activity and survival rate in E. coli CM611 (WP2s lexA), it was confirmed that the mutagenesis by chloropropanols was dependent on the SOS-repair system. This fact could be also confirmed from the result that both the mutagenic activity and survival rate in E. coli TK610 (umuC) were much lower than those in E. coli TK603 $(umuC^+)$. In the experiment to examine the possibility that chloropropanols might have effects on the LexA of SOS response negative regulator, there was no variation in ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activities of E. coli GW1105 $[lexA3\;(Ind^-)]$ and GW1107 [lexA51 (Def)] by addition of the compounds, indicating that chloropropanols do not have any effects on the LexA, itself.

  • Hazardous substances are formed during food manufacturing, processing, or cooking, and may pose a threat to food safety. Here, we present a dietary exposure assessment of Korean consumer's intake of hazardous materials through a Total Diet Study (TDS) which was conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The levels of exposure to materials such as acrylamide, furan, biogenic amines, etc., were estimated and risk assessments were then performed. Acrylamide and furan were selected as hazards with high priority of reduction control due to their having a margin of exposure (MOE) lower than 10,000. Risk assessment of exposure to ethyl carbamate, benzene and 3-MCPD showed MOEs higher than 100,000, indicating "safe". Dietary exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzopyrene was also found to be safe MOE levels >10,000. In addition, the results indicated safe MOEs (>1,000,000) for heterocyclic amines, nitrosamines, and biogenic amines. Most of the potential food contaminants were being kept at safe levels, however, it is necessary to continue to monitor and control exposure levels in accordance with the 'as low as reasonably achievable' (ALARA) principle.
