  • The simple and mixed ligand complexes of cadmium-oxalate-citrate systems have been studied with differential pulse polarography at 25${\circ}$C, in the solution with constant ionic strength, ${\mu}$= 1.0 ($NaNO_3$) and pH 8.0. Using the graphical methods by DeFord-Hume and Schaap-McMasters, the overall stability constants for the mixed ligand complexes, $\beta_{ij}$, were found to be: $log\beta_{11}$ = 4.91, $log\beta_{12}$ = 4.99, and log $log\beta_{21}$ = 5.18, respectively. Various equilibria involved in the mixed system have also been discussed.

  • To evaluate the protective effect of Ecklonia cava on ultra-fine dust ($PM_{2.5}$)-induced cytotoxicity, we investigated the in vitro antioxidant activity and cell viability after exposure to $PM_{2.5}$. E. cava was extracted using water and 80% ethanol, and antioxidant activity was determined using the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS)/2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. The 80% ethanol extract showed relatively higher antioxidant activity than the water extract. The cell protective effects were determined by measuring the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and viability of nasal epithelial (RPMI-2650), lung epithelial (A549), and brain neuroblastoma (MC-IXC) cells. Results showed that the 80% ethanol extract inhibited ROS production more than the water extract. In contrast, both extracts showed similar effects on cell viability in the $PM_{2.5}$-induced cell death assay. Thus, Ecklonia cava may act as an effective resource for preventing $PM_{2.5}$-induced cytotoxicity in nasal, lung, and brain cells.

  • To evaluate the protective effect of Codium fragile on fine dust (PM2.5)-induced cytotoxicity, we investigated its antioxidant activity and cell protective effect on PM2.5-exposed cells. The 40% ethanolic extract of C. fragile showed the highest total phenolic content, whereas the water extract of C. fragile showed the highest total polysaccharide content. The protective effect of the extracts on PM2.5-induced oxidative damage in nasal cavity (RPMI2650), lung (A549), brain (MC-IXC), hippocampus (HT-22), and microglia (BV-2) cells was evaluated by measuring the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and cell viability. The results showed that the 40% ethanolic extract more efficiently inhibited ROS production than the water extract. In contrast, PM2.5-exposed cells treated with the water extract showed higher viability than those treated with the 40% ethanolic extract.

  • It is the aim of this study to investigate the effects of sodium fluoride and sodium orthovanadate upon the proliferation and activity of the osteoblast (MC3T3-E1 cells). MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in $\alpha-MEM$ containing $10\%$ FBS and various concentration of sodium fluoride and sodium orthovanadate was appended to serum free media. DNA synthesis was examined through the $[^3H]$ thymidine incorporation into DNA. Collagen synthesis was examined through the $[^3H]$ proline incorporation into collagenase digestible protein and noncollagen protein. The following results were drawn; 1. Sodium fluoride stimulated the DNA synthesis of osteoblast significantly in dose-dependent manner within the concentration from $2{\mu}M$ to $10{\mu}M$ (P < 0.005). 2. Sodium orthovanadate stimulated the DNA synthesis of osteoblast significantly in dose-dependent manner within the concentration from $2{\mu}M\;to\;8{\mu}M$, however showed diminution at $10{\mu}M$ (P < 0.001). 3. Sodium fluoride and sodium orthovanadate stimulated the percent collagen synthesis of osteoblast significantly in dose-dependent manner within the concentration from $5{\mu}M$ to $10{\mu}M$ (P < 0.001). 4. Sodium fluoride and sodium orthovanadate stimulated the noncollagen synthesis of osteoblast significantly in dose-dependent manner within the concentration from $5{\mu}M\;to\;10{\mu}M$ (P < 0.001). In conclusion, sodium fluoride and sodium orthovanadate stimulate the proliferation and activity of osteoblast by stimulation of DNA synthesis and collagen and noncollagen synthesis in osteoblast.

  • The leaves of Acanthopanax species have traditionally been used as a tonic and a sedative as well as in the treatment of rheumatism and diabetes. Chiisanoside is the major active lupane triterpenoid of Acanthopanax leaves. To investigate the bioactivities of chiisanoside, which act on bone metabolism, the effects of chiisanoside on the function of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells were studied. Chiisanoside $(0.02{\sim}20\;{\mu}M)$ significantly increased the growth of MC3T3-E1 cells and caused a significant elevation of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, collagen content, and nodules mineralization in the cells (P < 0.05). The effect of chiisanoside (2 ${\mu}M$) in increasing ALP activity was completely prevented by the presence of tamoxifen, suggesting that the effect of chiisanoside might be partly estrogen receptor mediated. Moreover, cotreatment of p38 inhibitor SB203580 or JNK inhibitor SP600125 inhibited chiisanoside-mediated ALP upregulation, suggesting that the induction of differentiation by chiisanoside is associated with increased activation of p38 and JNK mitogen-activated protein kinases. Our data indicate that the enhancement of osteoblast function by chiisanoside may result in the prevention for osteoporosis.

  • Purpose : To characterize the effects of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and quercetin (QCT) on gene expression of osteonectin (ON) and osteopontin (OP) in irradiated MC3T3-El cells. Materials and Methods : When MC3T3-El osteoblastic cells had reached 70-80% confluence, cultures were transferred to a differentiating medium supplemented with 5 mM 2-DG or 10 ${\mu}M$ QCT and then irradiated with 2, 4, 6, and 8 Gy. At various times after irradiation, the cells were analyzed for the expression of bone mineralization genes such as ON and OP. Results : The mRNA expression of both ON and OP was increased according to the culture time in the differentiation medium, and the increase of the genes peaked at 14 days after the differentiation induction. In the case of OP, the increase of mRNA expression was maintained to 28 days after the differentiation, while the mRNA level of ON was reduced to the basal level at the same time. Irradiation adding 2-DG showed a significant peak value in the expression pattern of ON at 4 Gy 7 days after irradiation. Irradiation adding QCT increased the mRNA expression of ON and OP in a dose-dependant manner, but irradiation adding 2-DG did not show any differences between the control and experiments 14 days after irradiation. Irradiation adding QCT increased significantly the expression patterns of ON 21 days after irradiation. Conclusion : The results showed that QCT acted as a radiosensitizer in the gene expression of ON and OP during differentiation of the late stage of irradiated MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells in vitro. • Objectives: Localization of the mandibular canal (MC) and measurement of the height and width of the available alveolar bone at the proposed implant site in the posterior segment of the mandible using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with a single missing tooth. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed where CBCT scans of the patients with a single missing tooth in the posterior segment of the mandible-premolar, I (1st) molar, and II (2nd) molar were used. The scans were assessed using OnDemand3D software (version 1.0; CyberMed Inc., Seoul, Korea) for localization of the MC asnd remaining alveolar bone both vertically (from the superior position of the MC to the crest of the alveolar ridge) and horizontally (buccolingual, 3 mm below the crest of the alveolar ridge). The findings were statistically analyzed using independent t-test. Results: A total of 120 mandibular sites (40 sites for each of the three missing premolar, I molar, and II molar) from 91 CBCT scans were analyzed. The average heights (from the alveolar crest to the superior margin of the MC) at the premolar, I molar, and II molar areas were $15.19{\pm}2.12mm$, $14.53{\pm}2.34mm$, and $14.21{\pm}2.23mm$, respectively. The average widths, measured 3 mm below the crest of the alveolar ridge, at the premolar, I molar, and II molar areas were $6.22{\pm}1.96mm$, $6.51{\pm}1.75mm$, and $7.60{\pm}2.08mm$, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between males and females regarding the vertical and horizontal measurements of the alveolar ridges. Conclusion: In the study, the measurements were averaged separately for each of the single missing teeth (premolar, I molar, or II molar), giving more accurate information for dental implant placement.
