Membrane-associated Guanylate Kinase Inverted-3 Modulates Enterovirus Replication through AKT Signaling Activation (Membrane associated guanylate kinase inverted-3의 AKT signaling을 통한 enterovirus replication 조절)

  • Membrane-associated guanylate kinase inverted-3 (MAGI-3) is a member of the family of membrane-associated guanylate kinases (MAGUKs). MAGI-3 modulates the kinase activity of protein kinase B (PKB)/AKT through interactions with phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN)/MMAC. Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a common causative agent of acute myocarditis and chronic dilated cardiomyopathy. Activation of AKT and extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) is essential for CVB3 replication, but the relation between MAGI-3 signaling and CVB3 replication is not well understood. This study investigated the role of MAGI-3 in CVB3 infection and replication. MAGI-3 was overexpressed in HeLa cells by polyethylenimine (PEI) transfection. To optimize the transfection conditions, different ratios of plasmid DNA to PEI concentrations were used. MAGI-3 and empty plasmid DNA were transfected into the HeLa cells. MAGI-3 overexpression alone was not sufficient to efficiently activate AKT. However, expression of the CVB3 capsid protein VP1 dramatically increased in the HeLa cells overexpressing MAGI-3 24 h after CVB3 infection. In addition, the activities of AKT and ERK were significantly induced in the CVB3-infected MAGI-3 cells overexpressing HeLa. These results demonstrate that MAGI-3 expression upregulates CVB3 replication through AKT and ERK signaling activation. MAGI-3 may be an important target to control CVB3 replication.

Database Designs for u-Healthcare System and Magi Network Traffic Management System (u-헬스케어 시스템과 네트워크 트래픽 매니지먼트 시스템의 데이터베이스 설계 및 구현)

  • In this paper we present two databases for two different systems each having novel implementation ideas: a u-Healthcare system with a mobile gateway and MAGI network monitoring system. u-Healthcare system is capturing and monitoring vital sign data without restrictions of location and time using body sensor network and a mobile gateway. MAGI is a system which has a dynamic firewall function and solves problems of existing traffic monitoring tools. In addition to presenting the design principles behind these two systems, we describe the respective database schemas together with detailed information of the data stored within the databases. We will also show and discuss performance measurements and calculations for both systems. Based on the performance data we will discuss the systems' suitability for their intended uses.

PDZ Domain-containing Proteins at Autotypic Junctions in Myelinating Schwann Cells (수초화 슈반세포 autotypic 세포연접의 PDZ 도메인 보유 단백질)

  • A type of cell junction that is formed between different parts within the same cell is called autotypic cell junction. Autotypic junction proteins form tight junctions found between membrane lamellae of a cell, especially in myelinating glial cells. Some of them have postsynaptic density-95/disks large/zonula occludens-1 (PDZ) domains, which interact with the carboxyl (C)-terminal PDZ-binding motif of other proteins. PDZ domains are protein-protein interaction modules that play a role in protein complex assembly. The PDZ domain, which is widespread in bacteria, plants, yeast, metazoans, and Drosophila, allows the assembly of large multi-protein complexes. The multi-protein complexes act in intracellular signal transduction, protein targeting, and membrane polarization. The identified PDZ domain-containing proteins located at autotypic junctions include zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), ZO-2, pals-1-associated tight junction protein (PATJ), multi-PDZ domain proteins (MUPPs), membrane-associated guanylate kinase inverted 2 (MAGI2), and protease-activated receptor (PAR)-3. PAR-3 interacts with atypical protein kinase C and PAR-6, forming a ternary complex, which plays an important role in the regulation of cell polarity. MAGI2 interacts with ${\alpha}$-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptor at excitatory synapses. PATJ is detected in paranodal loops associated with claudin-1. On the other hand, MUPP1 is found in mesaxons and Schmidt-Lanterman incisures with claudin-5. ZO-1, ZO-2, and PAR-3 are found at all three sites. Different distributions of PDZ domain-containing proteins affect the development of autotypic junctions. In this review, we will describe PDZ domain-containing proteins at autotypic tight junctions in myelinating Schwann cells and their roles.

A Study on Byul-Gam Uniforms in Yi-Dynasty (별감복 소고)

  • Byul-Gam is a low-ranking official who takes charge of sundry services in Yi-Dynasty court, and escorts his king when he make a honored going. Uniforms of Byul-Gam are noted for their gaiety. This study aims at inquiring into uniforms of Byul-Gam through historical records. The resultant findings are as follows: 1) Uniforms of Byul-Gam are divided into full dress and ordinary clothes. 2) The full dress has two kinds of style. One is Dan-Ryung, a kind of robe, clad together with Gun as a headdress. This robe is blue, Gun for king's Byul-Gam violet, and Gun for the Crown Prince's Byul-Gam blue. The other is a combination of yellow Cho-Rip and red Chup-Ri. This is a military uniform. 3) Ordinary dresses for Byul-Gam are orange Cho-Rip and red Jik-Ryung. Underwear in this case is Hyup-Joo-Um and Chup-Ri. Hyup-Joo-Um is a kind of robe. Inside it Korean style of jacket and slacks are usually clad. 4) As time passed, the uniform of Byul-Gam had been changed from Cheong-Dan-Ryung to Hong-Dan-Ryung, and Jik-Ryung had been shifted to a full dress. 5) Only five remains of Jik-Ryung for Byul-Gam have been handed down to us. The analysis of those indicate that they gradually became similar to Duru-Magi, a kind of Korean robe. This fact is common in the other transfiguring process of dresses of robe kind.

The Notion of Death and Caring Behaviors in one Community (일 지역주민의 죽음관과 돌봄행위)

  • This study was to find out the perceptions of toward death and caring behavior of lay persons in one community : One Island in Puan County, Chonbuk. The methodology of this study was ethnography. For this study, the fieldwork was conducted from October 1997 to July 1998. Data collected by in-depth interview and participant observations. The participants consisted fo were 17 persons of both sexes. The key informants were four specific people. The result of this study is as follows ; The people perceived two different kinds of death. Normal death, which means death from old age. The person was respected as an ancestor God and was believed to exist forever with their offspring. Abnormal death was regarded as negative, many had fears toward this kind of death. The causes of abnormal death were supernatural phenomena and had absolute holy meanings. Whether death was good or bad, the death was not personal, but collective events as family or community affairs and was interpreted as death and birth for their offsprings. Funeral rites were family-centered and/or com munity-centered. They did normal procedures for normal deaths for abnormal deaths, there were many protective ceremonies(BuJungMagi : the prevention of the taboo of uncleanliness) for the remaining people. These ceremonies combined confucism and shamanism. Caring behavior for dying persons was ruled as community-centered, reciprocal and reality-centered principles.

Biological Control of Lycariella magi(Diptera: Sciaridae), a Pest of Oyster Mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus Using Entomopathogenic Nematodes (곤충병원성 선충을 이용한 느타리버섯해충, 긴수염버섯파리 (Lycoriella mali)의 생물적방제)

  • The potential of two entomopathogenic nematodes, Sreinernema carpocapsae Pocheon strain and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Hamyang strain as biological control agents was evaluated against mushroom ny, Lycoriella mali in laboratory and field. Mortality of L. mali was significantly different according to nematode species, concentration, temperature, and developmental stage of fly S. carpocapsae was more effective than H. bacteriophora. Mortality of L. mali was higher at $25^{\circ}C$ than at $20^{\circ}C$. In addition, the 3rd instal and the 4th instar of L. mali were more susceptible than the 2nd instar. The lowest $LC^{50}$ value was represented by S. carpocapsae, 20.0 infective juveniles (Ijs) in the 3rd instar, 27.5 Ijs in the 4th instar at $25^{\circ}C$. S. carpocapsae infected all the developmental stages of L. mali except egg stage and the 1st instar of larva. The highest mortality was shown in adult female representing 74.0% at$20^{\circ}C$ and 80.0% at $25^{\circ}C$.L. mali female adult was influenced by S. carpocapsae in oviposition. The number of eggs by L. mali female infected by nematodes was much lower than uninfected females. S. carpocapsae was dispersed by infected L. mali adult with higher numbers by females than males. When S. carpocapsae was applied at the rate of $2.25{\times}10^{5}\;and\;4.5{\times}10^{5}\;Ijs/1.5\;\textrm{m}^2$ in the mushroom house, mortalities were 42.2% and 81.6%, respectively. The infective juveniles of nematodes survived for 14 days in the mushroom medium. However, nematodes did not affect mushroom growth.
