  • Emerging of wireless sensor networks results in several modeling and design issues on the network simulations. In previous works, most researchers have used three evaluation approaches such as analysis method, computer simulation and real test-bed measurement in order to verify the performance of wireless sensor networks. Among these approaches, analysis method is widely used since the other approaches have significant drawbacks such as limitation of network power, computational problem of distribute processing and complication of debugging process. However, the analysis method also shows poor performance when it deals with complex operations in huge wireless sensor networks. Thus, in this paper, we design and develop SMAC and AODV protocols by using Ptolemy tool in order to improve the simulation performance. The developed Ptolemy actor can be easily adapted to compare and evaluate the various protocols for wireless sensor networks.

  • Development of high-speed Internet services and the increased supply of mobile devices have become the key factor for the acceleration of ubiquitous technology. WiBro system, formed with lP backbone network, is a MBWA technology which provides high-speed multimedia service in a possibly broader coverage than Wireless LAN can offer. Wireless telecommunication environment needs not only mobility support in Layer 2 but also mobility management protocol in Layer 3 and has to minimize handover latency to provide seamless mobile services. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on signal strength prediction in WiBro environment. The signal strength is measured at regular intervals and future value of the strength is predicted by Exponential Smoothing Method. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency is reduced. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme predicts that future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency.

  • In this paper, we introduce an low complexity and low power IR-UWB (impulse radio ultra wideband) baseband transceiver for wireless sensor network. The proposed baseband, implemented by TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology, has a simple structure in which a simplified packet structure and a digital synchronizer with 1-bit sampler to detect incoming pulses are used. Besides, clock gating method using gated clock cell as well as customized clock domain division can reduce the total power consumption drastically. As a result, the proposed baseband has about 23K digital gates with an internal memory of 2Kbytes and achieves about 1.8mW@1Mbps power consumption.

  • Currently, IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) is rising as the most popular means for the broadband wireless access network. In this thesis, we propose a QoS(Quality of Service)-Oriented mechanism using handshaking method of scanning phase in IEEE 802.11 handoff. In conventional process for handoff, the major criterion to select the best AP(Access Point) among candidates is normally based on the RSS(Received Signal Strength), which does not always make the selected network guarantee the maximum achievable performance. Even though the link quality with a neighboring AP is excellent, the AP may not be a good candidate to handoff to simply because MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol of IEEE 802.11 standard is contention-based such as CSMA/CA. Therefore, if we apply network level information to AP selection criteria, we can achieve better handoff efficiency rather than before. The analysis and simulation results applied to our new mechanism show clearly better performance than AP selection based on traditional handoff method.

  • With the recent growth in demand for high-data rate multimedia services in the wireless environments, the Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) technologies, such as WiBro (Wireless Broadband internet) system, are gradually coming into the spotlight. Unlike the conventional mobile communication networks based on cellular system, the WiBro system basically consists of IP based backbone networks that will be ultimately deployed by Ipv6 (IP version six) based backbone networks according to the All-IP trend for the network evolution. In such wireless mobile environments, it is needed to support the mobility management protocol on network layer as well as physical layer and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer in WiBro system. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a fast handover scheme for improving the handover performance in IPv6 based WiBro system and show that the proposed scheme achieves loss-free and low handover latency during inter-subnet movement of the mobile stations through the simulation.

  • Several VHF bands for the use in analog communications has been changed to those for the use in new maritime digital communications by WRC-12. ITU-R M. 1842-1 has been also standardized, recommending the characteristics of maritime digital communication systems. In addition, a Shipborne Ad-hoc Network (SANET) has been introduced by IMO in order to provide ships, which cannot be connected to a shore directly, with maritime digital data exchange services with the help of ad-hoc communication. In this paper, several functionalities of the SANET, including channel access, route determination to a shore, and data exchange, are verified via sea trials. It is expected that the SANET can be applicable to collecting and analyzing maritime information, facilitating the entry and departure of vessels, and the communication infrastructure of e-navigation.

  • Opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) has been proposed for multi-cell random access networks (RAN), which minimizes the generating interference to neighboring RANs and yields better performance compared with the conventional techniques. The OIA for RANs considers both physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. In this paper, we introduce a protocol of which each user maximizes the transmit signal regardless of the generating interference to neighboring RANs, contrary to the OIA technique. In addition, we compare the performance of the signal-maximization technique with the OIA technique.

  • Secure operating system is a special operating system that integrates some security functions(i.e. access control, user authentication, audit-trail and etc.) with normal operating system in order to protect system from various attacks. But it doesn't consider my security of network traffic. To guarantee the security of the whole system, network traffic must be protected by a certain way and IPsec is a representative technology for network security. However, it requires administrator's carefulness in managing security policies and the key management mechanism is very heavy as well as complicated. Moreover, it doesn't have a suitable framework for delivery of security information for access control mechanism. So we propose a simple trusted channel mechanism for secure communication between secure operating systems. It provides confidentiality md authentication for network traffic and ability to deliver security information. It is implemented at the kernellevel of IP layer and the simplicity of the mechanism can minimize the overhead of trusted channel processing.

  • IEEE 802.15.6 standard technology is proposed for low-power wireless communication in, on and around body, where vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, ECG, and EEG signals are transmitted as a type of data packet. Especially, these vital signs should be delivered in real time, so that the latency from slave node to hub node can be one of the pivotal performance requirements. However, in the case of IEEE 802.15.6 technology data retransmission caused by transmission failure can be done in the next superframe. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose an adaptive polling algorithm for IEEE 802.15.6 technology. The proposing algorithm makes the hub to look for an appropriate time period in order to make data retransmission within the superframe. Through the performance evaluation, the proposing algorithm achieves a 61% and a 73% latency reduction compared to those of IEEE 802.15.6 technology in the environment of 70% traffic offered load with 10ms and 100ms superframe period. In addition, the proposing algorithm prevents bursty traffic transmission condition caused by mixing retransmission traffic with the traffic reserved for transmission. Through the proposing adaptive polling algorithm, it will be possible to transmit time-sensitive vital signs without severe traffic delay.

  • Using sensor devices applied to various objects will be needed wireless network that it is easy to install in them. Tiny devices configured to processor that bas comparatively low computing ability are inappropriate to use devices that are wireless LAN, etc. In result, network devices needed to not only have simple communication protocol, but have Plug and Play function that it works as soon as it connects without installing any device driver. it also will industrially have both low power and low cost because of mobility of it. From IEEE 802.11 standard, WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network) included in LAN is being developed by WPAN WG(Working Group) on area with low power consumption and low complexity. In addition to, it is standardizing MAC and PRY of the standard that is expected to wirelessly communicate within 10m. WPAN will be used generally in the more near future because of both low power and low cost of Zigbee. In this paper we designed zigbee based user authentication module for a automotive smart-key system.
