Preparation of W-V functionally gradient material by spark plasma sintering

  • Functionally gradient material (FGM) is promisingly effective in mitigating the thermal stress between plasma facing materials (PFM) and structural materials. However, the corresponding research with respect to W/V FGM has not been reported yet. In this work, we firstly report the successful fabrication of W/V FGM by a combined technology of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microhardness and microstructure of the consolidated sample were both investigated. W/V stacks show significantly enhanced microhardness (>100%) compared with pure W plate, which is beneficial to the integral strength of the hybrid structure. Furthermore, we clarify that the different ductility of W and V should be carefully considered, otherwise W/V powder might aggregate and lead to the formation of compositional segregation, and simultaneously unmask the impact of V proportion on the distribution of second phase in W-V binary alloy system. This work provides an innovative approach for obtaining W-V connections with much better performance.

레디믹스트 숏크리트 개발 I : 기초 연구 (Development of Ready-mixed Shotcrete I : Basic Study)

  • 레디믹스트(Ready-mixed) 숏크리트는 전문공장에서 원재료를 건조배합 형태로 생산하여 시공현장으로 운반 및 타설되는 재료로서, 확실한 골재 품질관리가 가능하며 규격화된 재료 사용으로 시공 품질 개선이 가능하다. 특히, 현장 배치플랜트의 축소 혹은 생략이 가능하기 때문에, 설치비용 절감 및 부지확보로 인한 민원과 환경문제를 해결할 수 있는 추가적인 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 숏크리트 성능 향상을 위한 방법으로 혼화재 및 급결제에만 국한되어 있던 기존 연구방향을 벗어나, 골재 자체의 품질 개선을 통해 숏크리트 성능을 향상시키고자 하였다. 기초 연구에서는 국내 숏크리트 시공실태 및 공급골재의 품질파악을 실시하였고, 현장실험을 통해 레디믹스트 숏크리트의 굵은 골재 최대치수를 8mm로 결정하였다. 또한, Pilot Plant Test를 실시하여 공장생산 공정의 재료분리 현상을 최소화 하고자 하였고, 현장실험을 통해 강섬유와 동일 수준의 휨인성을 발휘할 수 있는 합성섬유의 최적 혼입량과 고로슬래그 미분말의 최적 치환율을 도출하였다.

Electronic properties of MgO films

  • MgO는 암염구조를 가진 전형적인 이온 결합성 화합물로서 7.8eV의 띠틈을 갖고 흡습성이 강하다. 면 방전 구조 PDP에서 MgO 보호막은 면 방전으로 인한 유전층의 식각을 보호하고 2차 전자 방출을 통해 방전 전압을 낮추는 역할을 한다. 하지만 MgO 보호막은 증착시 흡수된 수분이 제거되어야 하고, 방전 특성 개선 및 방전 효율 향상을 위해 가공 처리에 관한 연구가 진행 되어야 한다. 본 연구는 MgO 보호막의 전자적 특성의 변화를 알아보기 위해 $O_2$ 분위기에서 전자빔 증착법을 이용해 MgO Powder를 사용하여 시료를 제작하였다. 표면에 흡착된 수분제거로 인한 특성 변화를 알아보기 위해 진공 챔버내에서 시료를 $500^{\circ}C{\sim}550^{\circ}C$의 열처리를 실시한 후 XPS(X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), REELS(Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy), UPS(Ultraviolet photoelectron Spectroscopy)를 이용하여 전자적 특성을 연구하였다. XPS 측정결과 시료의 열처리를 통해 C1s spectrum의 O-C=O(289eV) binding energy가 없어져 박막에 흡착된 불순물이 제거 되었으며 O1s spectrum에서 Hydroxides가 감소하고 530.0eV의 MgO 결합에너지쪽으로 커짐으로써 박막의 구조를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 $O^2$ 분위기에서 성장시킨 MgO 박막 기판을 열처리 후 REELS를 이용해 띠틈을 얻어보면 Ep=500eV에서 띠틈이 6.77eV, Ep=1500eV에서 띠틈이 7.33eV로 각각 측정되었다. Ep=500eV의 REELS 스펙트럼으로부터 산소 결함에 의한 표면 F Center는 4.22eV로 확인되었다.

나노구조 Fe-Co 연자성 합금의 제조를 위한 PECS 공정 연구 (PECS Process for Fabrication of Nanostructured Fe-Co Softmagnetic Alloy)

  • 본 연구에서는 기계적 합금화 공정을 통하여 평균 10nm의 크기를 가지는 결정립으로 이루어지는 나노구조 Fe-Co 합금분말을 제조하였으며 제조된 합금분말을 PECS 공정으로 소결하여 벌크의 나노구조 Fe-Co 연자성 합금을 제조하고자 하였다. PECS 공정은 소결온도를 700, 800, 900과 100$0^{\circ}C$로 변화시키고 유지시간을 0에서 16분가지 변화시켜주며 수행하였다. PECS 공정의 나노구조 소결체 제조에 관한 효율성을 평가하였으며 소결온도와 유지시간의 변화에 따른 소결밀도와 미세구조의 변화를 관찰하여 최적의 소결조건을 찾고자하였다. 또한 각 소결조건에서 제조된 소결체들의 보자력과 포화자화값을 측정하여 자성특성을 평가하였다.

치관 보철용 CaO-MgO-$SiO_2-P_2O_5-TiO_2$계 글라스 세라믹의 합성과 경도 (Synthesis and Hardness of Glass Ceramics for Dental Crown Prosthetic Application in the system CaO-MgO-SiO2-P2O5-TiO2)

  • Glass ceramics for dental crown prosthesis were prepared by crystallization of CaO-MgO-SiO2-$P_2O_5-TiO_2$ glasses. Their crystallization behaviors have been investigated as a function of heattreatment temperature, holding time and chemical composition in relation to mechinical properties. Crystallization peak temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis(DTA). Crystalline phases and mircostructures of heat-treated sample were determined by the means of powder X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The final crystalline phase assemblages and the microstructures of the samples were found to be dependent on glass compositions, heattreatment temperature, and holding time. 1st crystallization peak temperature(TP), affected strongly by apatite, was found to be increased or decreased. From the experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The crystallization peak temperature($T_P$) formed by apatite increased until adding up to 9wt% $TiO_2$ to base glass composition, then decreased above that. 2. Apatite($Ca_{10}P_6O_{25}$), whitlockite(${\beta}-3CaO-P_2O_5$), $\beta$-wollastonite($CaSiO_3$), magnesium tianate($MaTiO_3$) and diopside(CaO-MgO-$2SiO_2$) crystal phase were precipitated in MgO-CaO-$SiO_2-TiO_2-P_2O_5$ glass system containing 9wt% and 11wt% of $TiO_2$ 3. Vickers hardness of samples increased with increasing heat-treatment temperature and Vickers hardness of S415T9 samples heat-treated at 1075 was approxi-mately 813Kg $mm^{-2}$ as maximum value. 4. Vickers hardness of samples increased due to precipitation of apatite, whitlockite, $\beta$-wollastonite, magnesium titanate, and diopside crystal phases within glass matrix.

A Concise Design for the Irradiation of U-10Zr Metallic Fuel at a Very Low Burnup

  • In order to investigate the swelling behavior and fuel-cladding interaction mechanism of U-10Zr alloy metallic fuel at very low burnup, an irradiation experiment was concisely designed and conducted on the China Mianyang Research Reactor. Two types of irradiation samples were designed for studying free swelling without restraint and the fuel-cladding interaction mechanism. A new bonding material, namely, pure aluminum powder, was used to fill the gap between the fuel slug and sample shell for reducing thermal resistance and allowing the expansion of the fuel slug. In this paper, the concise irradiation rig design is introduced, and the neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analyses, which were carried out mainly using MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle) and FLUENT codes, are presented. Out-of-pile tests were conducted prior to irradiation to verify the manufacturing quality and hydraulic performance of the rig. Nondestructive postirradiation examinations using cold neutron radiography technology were conducted to check fuel cladding integrity and swelling behavior. The results of the preliminary examinations confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the design.

전자선 가교에 의한 HDPE/α-Al2O3 복합재료의 기계적 특성 평가 (Effects of Electron Beam Irradiation on Mechanical Properties of HDPE/α-Al2O3 Composites)

  • In this study, we fabricated the HDPE and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites with PE-g-MA as a function of the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ nanopowder weight ratios. The electron beam irradiations on HDPE/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites were carried out over a range of absorbed doses from 20 to 200 kGy to make three-dimensional network structures. The mechanical properties were characterized using UTM for confirming the changes of the flexural strength and tensile strength. It was observed that the mechanical properties of HDPE were enhanced by the addition of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. However, the strength of the 5 wt% ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ added composites decreased due to the nano-powder aggregation. The mechanical properties of composites were increased as increasing the electron beam irradiation up to 150 kGy. We believed that the electron beam irradiated HDPE/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites can be a good candidate for a variety of industrial applications.

Preparative separation of minor saponins from Panax notoginseng leaves using biotransformation, macroporous resins, and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography

  • Background: Ginsenosides with less sugar moieties may exhibit the better adsorptive capacity and more pharmacological activities. Methods: An efficient method for the separation of four minor saponins, including gypenoside XVII, notoginsenoside Fe, ginsenoside Rd2, and notoginsenoside Fd, from Panax notoginseng leaves (PNL) was established using biotransformation, macroporous resins, and subsequent preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: The dried PNL powder was immersed in the distilled water at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 min for converting the major saponins, ginsenosides Rb1, Rc, Rb2, and Rb3, to minor saponins, gypenoside XVII, notoginsenoside Fe, ginsenoside Rd2, and notoginsenoside Fd, respectively, by the enzymes present in PNL. The adsorption characteristics of these minor saponins on five types of macroporous resins, D-101, DA-201, DM-301, X-5, and S-8, were evaluated and compared. Among them, D-101 was selected due to the best adsorption and desorption properties. Under the optimized conditions, the fraction containing the four target saponins was separated by D-101 resin. Subsequently, the target minor saponins were individually separated and purified by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography with a reversed-phase column. Conclusion: Our study provides a simple and efficient method for the preparation of these four minor saponins from PNL, which will be potential for industrial applications.

Effect of mechanical alloying on the microstructural evolution of a ferritic ODS steel with (Y-Ti-Al-Zr) addition processed by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS)

  • The high-energy milling is one of the most extended techniques to produce Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) powder steels for nuclear applications. The consequences of the high energy mill process on the final powders can be measured by means of deformation level, size, morphology and alloying degree. In this work, an ODS ferritic steel, Fe-14Cr-5Al-3W-0.4Ti-0.25Y2O3-0.6Zr, was fabricated using two different mechanical alloying (MA) conditions (Mstd and Mact) and subsequently consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Milling conditions were set to evidence the effectivity of milling by changing the revolutions per minute (rpm) and dwell milling time. Differences on the particle size distribution as well as on the stored plastic deformation were observed, determining the consolidation ability of the material and the achieved microstructure. Since recrystallization depends on the plastic deformation degree, the composition of each particle and the promoted oxide dispersion, a dual grain size distribution was attained after SPS consolidation. Mact showed the highest areas of ultrafine regions when the material is consolidated at 1100 ℃. Microhardness and small punch tests were used to evaluate the material under room temperature and up to 500 ℃. The produced materials have attained remarkable mechanical properties under high temperature conditions.

The tunnel model tests of material development in different surrounding rock grades and the force laws in whole excavation-support processes

  • Currently, composite lining mountain tunnels in China are generally classified based on the [BQ] method for the surrounding rock grade. Increasingly, tunnel field construction is replicated indoors for scale down model tests. However, the development of analogous materials for model tests of composite lining tunnels with different surrounding rock grades is still unclear. In this study, typical Class III and V surrounding rock analogous materials and corresponding composite lining support materials were developed. The whole processes of excavation-support dynamics of the mountain tunnels were simulated. Data on the variation of deformations, contact pressures and strains on the surrounding rock were obtained. Finally, a comparative analysis between model tests and numerical simulations was performed to verify the rationality of analogous material development. The following useful conclusions were obtained by analyzing the data from the tests. The main analogous materials of Class III surrounding rock are barite powder, high-strength gypsum and quartz sand with fly ash, quartz sand, anhydrous ethanol and rosin for Class V surrounding rock. Analogous materials for rockbolts, steel arches are replaced by aluminum bar and iron bar respectively with both shotcrete and secondary lining corresponding to gypsum and water. In addition, load release rate of Class V surrounding rock should be less than Class III surrounding rock. The fenestration level had large influence on the load sharing ratio of the secondary lining, with a difference of more than 30%, while the influence of the support time was smaller. The Sharing ratios of secondary lining in Class III surrounding rock do not exceed 12%, while those of Class V surrounding rock exceed 40%. The overall difference between the results of model tests and numerical simulations is small, which verifies the feasibility of similar material development in this study.
