  • In February 2019, a damping-off disease occurred at the seedling stage of paprika in a commercial nursery located in Cheorwon, Korea. A species of Fusarium was isolated from the diseased plant and it was identified as Fusarium oxysporum based on morphological characteristics and nucleotide sequence data of translation elongation factor $1-{\alpha}$ and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase. The isolate obtained was revealed to be pathogenic to the host plant through pathogenicity tests, and the reisolation of the pathogen confirmed Koch's postulates. This is the first report of damping-off caused by Fusarium oxysporum on paprika in Korea.

  • The growth and health of the fetus and neonate are directly influenced by the nutritional and physiological status of sows. Sows are often under catabolic conditions due to restrict feeding program during pregnancy and low voluntary feed intake during lactation. The current restrict feeding program, which aims at controlling energy intake during gestation, results in an inadequate supply of dietary protein for fetal and mammary gland growth. Low voluntary feed intake during lactation also causes massive maternal tissue mobilization. Provision of amino acids and fatty acids with specific functions may enhance the performance of pregnant and lactating sows by modulating key metabolic pathways. These nutrients include arginine, branched-chain amino acids, glutamine, tryptophan, proline, conjugated linoleic acids, docosahexaenoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid, which can enhance conception rates, embryogenesis, blood flow, antioxidant activity, appetite, translation initiation for protein synthesis, immune cell proliferation, and intestinal development. The outcome is to improve sow reproductive performance as well as fetal and neonatal growth and health. Dietary supplementation with functional amino acids and fatty acids holds great promise in optimizing nutrition, health, and production performance of sows and piglets. • Symbol is one of the most profound ways to express the essence of human beings, as well as the most representative non-verbal communication medium. In this study, the descriptions of the clothing and ornaments of the main characters of the novel Little Women were excerpted from the Korean translation version. Based on the hidden symbols from the descriptions, after analyzing the characteristics of the main characters of the novel through their clothing and ornaments, the connection between the clothing and the symbols reflecting the internal workings of the mind was analyzed based on the previous theories on symbols. As proven in this study, since the clothing and ornaments directly symbolize the characteristics of the person, without any explicit statements about his/her characteristics, the clothing itself speaks volumes about them. Clothing is the most accurate visual symbol that speaks of the person's social, economic, and psychological aspects. The use of special clothing and ornaments or the highlight on certain parts reveals the characteristics of the character and his/her situations more effectively. In conclusion, literary, including novels well describes not only external factors, such as the social and cultural status of society and the character's economic situation, but also an individual's psychology such as his/her emotions and personalities. Therefore, the clothing that the character wears in a literary work symbolically reflects these factors.

  • The performance of the precision micro-positioning 4-dof stage is presented. The compact design utilizes the monolithic mechanism to achieve the translation in the Z axis and rotation in the $\theta$ z, $\theta$ x and $\theta$ y axes with high stiffness and high damping. Hysteresis, nonlinearity, and drift of the piezoelectric effects are improved by incorporating the sensors in a feedback control. Experiments demonstrate that the micro-positioning stage is capable of 2nm resolution over the travel range of 25$\mu\textrm$ m in the Z axis, 0.0l7 $\mu\textrm$ rad resolution over the 170$\mu\textrm$ rad in the $\theta$ z and 0.011 $\mu\textrm$ rad resolution over the $\mu\textrm$ rad in the $\theta$ x and $\theta$ y axes. The cross-axis interferences among the axes are at a noise range. This stage is available for positioning error compensation of the XY stage with large stroke.

  • We have designed nucleotide sequences of hEGF structural gene to eliminate the N-terminal methionine residue incorporated during the translation initiation step, and constructed recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) secretion plasmids pYHB101, and pYHB2 in which pelB signal sequence-hEGF gene was expressed under the control of the T7, and tac promoter, respectively. We also constructed pYHB1 vector which contains rhEGF gene controlled by T7 promoter. The transformant with pYHB101 showed relatively slow growth pattern compared to the transformant with pYHB1. However, we observed that the transformant with pYHB101 secreted rhEGF of 13 mg/l significantly after 5 hr induction with 1 mM IPTG and that the T7 promoter was more effective than tac promoter when connected to pelB signal sequence. The amount of rhEGF was 14 mg/l under the sub-optimized condition.

  • Although action modes of equol and genistein have been extensively studied, their precise roles in tumor cells remain elusive. To address possible effects of these compounds on protein expression in mammary tumor cells, proteins modulated in MCF-7 mammary tumor cells when incubated in absence and presence of 10 uM equol or genistein were identified through 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis, MALDI-TOF MS/MS, and NCBInr database search using Mascot software. Most proteins differentially expressed in MCF-7 cells after treatment with 10 uM genistein or equol were identified as being the same. Exposure to both compounds caused decreased cellular expression of RNA-binding protein regulatory subunit and oncogene DJ1 tubulin beta-1 chain, and increased expression of heterogeneous ribonucleoproteins F and L, KH-type splicing regulatory protein, and translation elongation factor EF-Tu precursor. Genistein and equol at dose used in this study showed common action mechanism.

  • tRNA (m¹ G37) methyltransferase (TrmD) catalyze s the trans for of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) to G/sup 37/ within a subset of bacterial tRNA species, which have a residue G at 36th position. The modified guanosine is adjacent to and 3' of the anticodon and is essential for the maintenance of the correct reading frame during translation. We have determined the first crystal structure of TrmD from Haemophilus influenzae, as a binary complex with either AdoMet or S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine (AdoHcy), as a ternary complex with AdoHcy/phosphate, and as an apo form. The structure indicates that TrmD functions as a dimer (Figure 1). It also suggests the binding mode of G/sup 36/G/sup 37/ in the active site of TrmD and catalytic mechanism. The N-terminal domain has a trefoil knot, in which AdoMet or AdoHcy is bound in a novel, bent conformation. The C-terminal domain shows a structural similarity to DNA binding domain of trp or tot repressor. We propose a plausible model for the TrmD₂-tRNA₂ complex, which provides insights into recognition of the general tRNA structure by TrmD (Figure 2).

  • Calcineurin governs stress survival, sexual differentiation, and virulence of the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Herein, we identified and characterized calcineurin substrates in C. neoformans by employing phosphoproteomic $TiO_2$ enrichment and quantitative mass spectrometry. The identified targets include the zinc finger transcription factor Crz1 and proteins whose functions are linked to P-bodies/stress granules (PBs/SGs) and mRNA translation and decay, such as Pbp1 and Puf4. We show that Crz1 is a bona fide calcineurin substrate, and localization and transcriptional activity of Crz1 are controlled by calcineurin. Several of the calcineurin targets localized to PBs/SGs, including Puf4 and Pbp1, and are required for survival at high temperature and for virulence. Genetic epistasis analysis revealed that Crz1 and the novel targets Lhp1, Puf4, and Pbp1 function in a branched calcineurin pathway that orchestrates stress survival and virulence. These findings propose that calcineurin controls thermal stress and virulence at the transcriptional level via Crz1 and post-transcriptionally by regulating target factors involved in mRNA metabolism.

  • SPARQL(SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language)은 지식 베이스를 위한 표준 시맨틱 질의 언어이다.

  • This paper deals with the flow caused by a two-dimensional pulsating source, which moves with a constant horizontal speed beneath the free surface. The analysis is based on lincar potential theory including surface tension effects. In the case of subcritical reduced frequencies $\tau<1/4(\tau=U_{\omega}/g$, U=constant speed, $\omega$=circular frequency, g=gravitational acceleration), six wave components arc found. Two of them are largely affected by surface tension, which propagate ahead of the source in the direction of and opposite to the steady translation, respectively. The rest are almost identical with those found by Haskind(1954), i.e. for which the surface tension effect is negligible. For low oscillation frequencies, the resonant frequency still exists at $\tau$ only slightly greater than 1/4. For oscillation frequencies greater than $\nu(={\omega}^2/g)>20$, the surface tension effect is so significant that it disperses generated waves and consequently the singular phenomenon is removed. However, in addition to the gravity breaking, capillary breakings occur when the translation speed coincides with the minimum capillary celerity.
