  • Deep V I CCD photometry of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy shows that the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) is located at I = $21.15{\pm}0.10$ mag and (V - I) = $1.58{\pm}0.03$. Using the I magnitude of the tip of the RGB (TRGB), the distance modulus of the Pegasus galaxy is estimated to be $(m\;-\;M)_o\;=\;25.13{\pm}0.11$ mag (corresponding to a distance of d = $1060{\pm}50$ kpc). This result is in a good agreement with the recent distance estimate based on the TRGB method by Aparicio [1994, ApJ, 437, L27],$ (m\;-\;M)_o$ = 24.9 (d = 950 kpc). However, our distance estimate is much smaller than that based on the Cepheid variable candidates by Hoessel et al.[1990, AJ, 100, 1151], $(m\;-\;M)_o\;=\;26.22{\pm}0.20$ (d = $1750{\pm}160$ kpc) mag. The color-magnitude diagram illustrates that the Cepheid candidates used by Hoessel et al.are not located in the Cepheid instability strip, but in the upper part of the giant branch. This result shows that the Cepheid candidates studied by Hoessel et al.are probably not Cepheids, but other types of variable stars. Taking the average of our distance estimate and Aparicio's, the distance to the Pegasus galaxy is d= $1000{\pm}80$ kpc. Considering the distance and velocity of the Pegasus galaxy with respect to the center of the Local Group, we conclude that the Pegasus galaxy is probably a member of the Local Group.

  • This paper presents design of a wide tuning range digitally controlled oscillator(DCO) for Mobile-DTV applications. DCO is the key element of the ADPLL block that generates oscillation frequencies. We proposed a binary delay chain(BDC) structure, for wide tuning range DCO, modifying conventional fixed delay chain. The proposed structure generates oscillation frequencies by delay cell combination which has a variable delay time of $2^i$ in the range of $0{\leq}i{\leq}n-1$. The BOC structure can reduce the number of delay cells because it make possible to select delay cell and resolution. We simulated the proposed DCO by Cadence's Spectre RF tool in 1.8V chartered $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The simulation results showed 77MHz~2.07GHz frequency range and 3ps resolution. The phase noise yields -101dBc/Hz@1MHz at Mobile-DTV maximum frequency 1675MHz and the power consumption is 5.87mW. The proposed DCO satisfies Mobile-DTV standards such as ATSC-M/H, DVB-H, ISDB-T, T-DMB.

  • In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on glass substrates coated with Ni/Cr by an atmospheric pressure plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(AP-PECVD) and their structural and electrical characteristics were investigated as a possible application to the field emitter of field emission display (FED) devices. The substrate temperature ($400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$) were varied and the grown CNTs were multi wall CNTs (at $500^{\circ}C$, 15 - 20 layers of graphene sheets, distance of each layer : 0.3nm, inner diameter: 10 - 15nm, outer diameter: 30 - 40nm). The ratio of defective carbon peak to graphite carbon peak of the CNTs grown at $500^{\circ}C$ (C measured by fourier transform(FT)-Raman was 0.772 $I_D / I_G$ ratio. When field emission properties were measured, the turn-on field was $2.92V/{\mu}m$ and the emission field at $1mA/cm^2$ was $5.325V /{\mu}m$.

  • Veronica persica (V. persica) is a perennial plant that is broadly distributed in Europe, Asia and so on. V. persica is used for pain about the lower abdomen and low back. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of V. persica ethanol extract in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. To evaluate the anti-oxidant activity, the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and reducing power activity were carried out. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were evaluated as 72.0% and 73.0% at the concentrations of 200 and $500{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of V. persica extracts were measured as 65.22 mg/g and 43.82 mg/g at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. The reducing power activity measurement showed 53.0% activity at 1 mg/mL. The anti-inflammatory effects of the V. persica extract were evaluated in LPS induced RAW 264.7 cells. In the evaluation of cell viability by proliferation & cytotoxicity assay kit, the cytotoxicity of the extract was not confirmed at $0{\sim}800{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. And the V. persica significantly inhibited NO production in a concentration dependent manner. The inhibition effects of NO in cell medium of V. persica was over 80% at $800{\mu}g/mL$. The V. persica also suppressed the expression of iNOS, COX-2, and phosphorylation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ and $IkB-{\alpha}$ proteins. These results indicate that the V. persica has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by modulating $NF-{\kappa}B$ signaling pathways and can be used as natural functional materials.

  • Deposition conditions of diamond thin films were optimized using hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD). Boron-doped diamond thin films with varying boron densities were then fabricated using B4C solid pellets. Current-voltage responses and field emission currents were measured to test the characteristics of field emission display (FED). With the increase of boron doping, the crystal size of diamond decreased slightly, but its quality was not changed significantly in case of small doping. The I-V characterization was performed for Al/diamond/p-Si, and the current of doped diamond film was increased $10^4\sim10^5$ times as compared with that of undoped film. In the field emission properties, the electrons were emitted with low electric field with the increase of doping, while the emission current increased. The onset-field of electron emission was 15.5 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 2 pellets, 13.6 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 3 pellets and 11.1 V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ for 4 pellets. With the incorporation of boron, the slope of Fowler-Nordheim graph was decreased, revealing that the electron emission behavior was improved with the decrease of the effective barrier energy.

  • 삼중접합 태양전지에 상부전지로 이용되는 a-SiO:H 태양전지는 PECVD(Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition)을 이용하여 증착하였다. i a-SiO:H는 $CO_2/SiH_4$ 비율을 변화하여 밴드갭을 조절하였다.

  • The 1H NMR signals of the heme methyl, propionate and related chemical groups of cytochrome C3 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki F (D.v. MF) were assigned by means of 1D NOE, 2D DQFCOSY and 2D TOCSY spectra. They were consistent with the assignments of the hemes with the highest and second-lowest redox potentials reported by Gayda et al. [Reference: 15]. The heme assignments were also supported by NOE between the methyl groups of these hemes and the side chain of Val-18, All the results contradicted the heme assignments for D.v. MF cytochrome C3 made on the basis of NMR [Reference: 11]. Based on these assignments, the interaction of cytochrome C3 with ferredoxin I was investigated by NMR. The major interaction site of cytochrome C3 was identified as the heme with the highest redox potential, which is surrounded by the highest density of positive charges. The stoichiometry and association constant were two cytochrome C3 molecules per monomer of ferredoxin I and 108 M-2 (at 53 mM ionic strength and $25^{\circ}C$), respectively.

  • Background: The opitmal ventilator setting during partial liquid ventilation(PLV) is controversial. This study investigated the effects of various gas exchange parameters during PLV in normal rabbit lungs in order to aid in the development of an optimal ventilator setting during PLV. Methods: Seven New-Zealand white rabbits were ventilated in pressure-controlled mode with the following settings; tidal volume($V_T$) 8 mL/kg, positive end-expiratory pressure(PEEP) 4 $cmH_2O$, inspiratory-to-expiratory ratio(I:E ratio) 1:2, fraction of inspired oxygen($F_TO_2$) 1.0. The respiration rate(RR) was adjusted to keep $PaCO_2$ between 35~45 mmHg. The ventilator settings were changed every 30 min in the following sequence : (1) Baseline, as the basal ventilator setting, (2) Inverse ratio, I:E ratio 2:1, (3) high PEEP, adjust PEEP to achieve the same mean inspiratory pressure (MIP) as in the inverse ratio, (4) High $V_T$, $V_T$ 15 mL/kg, (5) high RR, the same minute ventilation (MV) as in the High $V_T$. Subsequently, the same protocol was repeated after instilling 18 mL/kg of perfluorodecalin for PLV. The parameters of gas exchange, lung mechanics, and hemodynamics were examined. Results: (1) The gas ventilation(GV) group showed no significant changes in the $PaO_2$ at all phases. The $PaCO_2$ was lower and the pH was higher at the high $V_T$ and high RR phases(p<0.05). No significant changes in the lung mechanics and hemodynamics parameters were observed. (2) The baseline $PaO_2$ for the PLV was $312{\pm}$ mmHg. This was significantly lower when decreased compared to the baseline $PaO_2$ for GV which was $504{\pm}81$ mmHg(p=0.001). During PLV, the $PaO_2$, was significantly higher at the high PEEP($452{\pm}38$ mmHg) and high $V_T$ ($461{\pm}53$ mmHg) phases compared with the baseline phase. However, it did not change significantly during the inverse I:E ratio or the high RR phases. (3) The $PaCO_2$ was significantly lower at high $V_T$ and RR phases for both the GV and PLV. During the PLV, $PaCO_2$ were significantly higher compared to the GV (p<0.05). (4) There were no important or significant changes in of baseline and high RR phases lung mechanics and hemodynamics parameters during the PLV. Conclusion: During PLV in the normal lung, adequate $V_T$ and PEEP are important for optimal oxygenation.

  • We fabricated a schottky barrier metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor(SB-MOSFET) by applying indium-tin-oxide(ITO) to the source/drain on a highly resistive GaN layer grown on a silicon substrate. The MOSFET, with 10 ${\mu}M$ gate length and 100 ${\mu}M$ gate width, exhibits a threshold gate voltage of 2.7 V, and has a sub-threshold slope of 240 mV/dec taken from the $I_{DS}-V_{GS}$ characteristics at a low drain voltage of 0.05 V. The maximum drain current is 18 mA/mm and the maximum transconductance is 6 mS/mm at $V_{DS}$=3 V. We observed that the spectral photo-response characterization exhibits that the cutoff wavelength was 365 nm, and the UV/visible rejection ratio was about 130 at $V_{DS}$ = 5 V. The MOSFET-type UV detector using ITO, has a high UV photo-responsivity and so is highly applicable to the UV image sensors.
