  • A study was carried out to investigate the action of central L-pheylalanine (Phe) and L-tyrosine (Tyr) on food intake of the chicken. In the first trial, Phe ($200{\mu}g/10{\mu}l$) or saline was acutely administered into the right lateral ventricle (i.c.v.) of chickens (5 birds per each group). Birds (4 birds per each group) were administered with the i.c.v. Tyr ($200{\mu}g/10{\mu}l$) or saline in the second trial. The brains of the birds were removed for catecholamine assy 30 min postadministration. Catecholamine concentrations were measured at specific sites of the brain (LH: lateral hypothalamus, PVN: paraventricular nucleus, and VMH: ventromedial hypothalamus). No significant effect of amino acids on the concentration of norepinephrine of brain sites investigated was detected. Food intake and rectal body temperature were also monitored for 6 h after central administrations of Phe, Tyr or saline (5 birds per each group). Both Phe and Tyr, up to $1mg/10{\mu}l$, failed to modulate food intake or rectal body temperature.

  • We have investigated the Josephson vortex dynamics in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O{8+\delta}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions subjected to a magnetic field parallel to $CuO_2$ planes. We investigated mesas with $40\times40{\mu}m^2$ in size and containing 6 and 20. intrinsic junctions. The zero field I-V characteristics exhibited a typical hysteretic, multi-branched nature of the intrinsic Josephson effect. At high magnetic fields (H>1.5 T), I-V characteristics showed flux flow steps. The Swihart velocity obtained from this observation was about $4.2\times10^5$ m/s, which was the lowest mode electromagnetic wave velocity of N coupled stack. The experimental I-V curves fitted well into the simple model of Cherenkov radiation including Ohmic and non-linear dissipation terms. This suggests that the dissipation mechanism of Josephson vortex be due to both Cherenkov radiation and quasiparticle tunneling current.

  • Static characteristics of SiC (silicon carbide) lateral p-i-n diodes implemented on semi-insulating substrate without an epitaxial layer are inVestigated. On-axis SiC HPSI (high purity semi-insulating) and VDSI (Vanadium doped semi-insulating) substrates are used to fabricate the lateral p-i-n diode. The space between anode and cathode ($L_{AC}$) is Varied from 5 to $20{\mu}m$ to inVestigate the effect of intrinsic-region length on static characteristics. Maximum breakdown Voltages of HPSI and VDSI are 1117 and 841 V at $L_{AC}=20{\mu}m$, respectiVely. Due to the doped Vanadium ions in VDSI substrate, diffusion length of carriers in the VDSI substrate is less than that of the HPSI substrate. A forward Voltage drop of the diode implemented on VDSI substrate is 12 V at the forward current of $1{\mu}A$, which is higher than 2.5 V of the diode implemented on HPSI substrate.

  • Using milled barley of four varieties Olbori, Youngsan-bori, Sacheon 6, and Suwon 228, the barley proteins were fractionated by the Osborne method and the modified Osborne method. Two fractionation methods were compared. There was a steady increase in the amount of nitrogen extracted as NaCl concentration increased, reaching a maximum at 0.5M NaCl and the extraction of nitrogen by 0.5M NaCl reached a maximum at $22^{\circ}C$. Alcohol-soluble fraction was least extracted by 70% (v/v) ethanol at $4^{\circ}C$ and most by sequential extraction with 50% (v/v) propan-1-ol alone followed by 50% (v/v) propan-1-ol plus 3% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol. Nitrogen was least extracted between pH 4 and 6 and most extracted at higher pH than 10. The modified Osborne fractionation of the protein complex in the four barleys showed that the salt-soluble nitrogen accounted for 21,4% to 24.1%, hordein-I varied from 30.4% to 43.4%, hordein-II varied widely from 9.3% to 19.5% and borate buffer-soluble glutelin content ranged from 17.1% to 23.7%.

  • Light diffraction on optically anisotropic substrates with the surface microrelief has been calculated by using the OAGSM method. Varying of the microrelief depth and material birefringence allows to realize different polarization state of the light beam transmitted or reflected by the substrate. The approach can be used to optimize the LCD backlight.

  • This paper presents the electrical performances of novel AlGaSb/InGaAs heterojunction-based vertical-tunneling field-effect transistor (VTFET). The device performance was investigated in views of the on-state current ($I_{on}$), drain-induced barrier thinning (DIBT), and subthreshold swing (SS) as the gate length ($L_G$) was scaled down. The proposed TFET with a $L_G$ of 5 nm operated with an $I_{on}$ of $1.3mA/{\mu}m$, a DIBT of 40 mV/V, and an SS of 23 mV/dec at a drain voltage ($V_{DS}$) of 0.23 V. The proposed TFET provided approximately 25 times lower DIBT and 12 times smaller SS compared with the conventional $L_G$ of 5 nm TFET. The AlGaSb/InGaAs VTFET showed extremely high scalability and strong immunity against short-channel effects.

  • In the companion paper (I-Problem Statements of the Current Seismic Design Code), the current Korean seismic design code is required to be modified considering site characteristics in Korea for the reliable estimation of site amplification. In this paper, three site classification methods based on the mean shear wave velocity of the top 30m $V_{S30}$, fundamental site periods $(T_G)$ and bedrock depth were investigated and compared with each other to determine the best classification system. Not enough of a difference in the standard deviation of site coefficients $(F_a\;and\;F_v)$ to determine the best system, and neither is the difference between the average spectral accelerations and the design response spectrum of each system. However, the amplification range of RRS values based on $T_G$ were definitely concentrated on a narrow band than other classification system. It means that sites which have a similar behavior during earthquake will be classified as the same site category at the site classification system based on $T_G$. The regression curves between site coefficients and $T_G$ described the effect of soil non linearity well as the rock shaking intensity increases than the current method based on $V_{S30}$. Furthermore, it is unambiguous to determine sue category based on $T_G$ when the site investigation is performed to shallower depth less than 30m, whereas the current $V_{S30}$ is usually calculated fallaciously by extrapolating the $V_s$ of bedrock to 30m. From the results of this study, new site classification system based on $T_G$ was recommended for legions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea.
