  • Two new cyclic depsipeptides wewakamide A (1) and guineamide G (2) have been isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya semiplena and Lyngbya majuscula, respectively, collected from Papua New Guinea. The amino and hydroxy acid partial structures of wewakamide A and guineamide G were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic techniques, including HR-FABMS, 1D $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR, as well as 2D COSY, HSQC, HSQC-TOCSY, and HMBC spectra. The sequence of the residues of wewakamide A was determined through a combination of ESI-MS/MS, HMBC, and ROESY. Wewakamide A possesses a ${\beta}$-amino acid, 3-amino-2-methylbutanoic acid (Maba) residue, which has only been previously identified in two natural products, guineamide B (3) and dolastatin D (4). Although both new compounds (1,2) showed potent brine shrimp toxicity, only guineamide G displayed significant cytotoxicity to a mouse neuroblastoma cell line with $LC_{50}$ values of 2.7 ${\mu}M$.

  • Subtidal algal communities of lnchon Dock, an enclosed artificial dock in the western coast of Korea, were investigated qualitatively and quntitatively. Assessments of species composition, biomass rlominant species, and vertical distribution were conducted from January to December, 1990. Duf"16 the study, benthic marine algal community was disturbed completely by water blooming in June, and was recolonized from July. Forty-five species of marine algae, 18 blue green. 13 green. 6 brown, and 8 red algae, were identified as results. Mean biomass was in ranges of $53.50-118.00\;g-dry\;wt/m^2$ in community before disturbance and $0.57-2.62\;g-dry\;wt/m^2$ after it. Dominant species determined by biomass and frequency were Polysiphonia m0\ulcorner7owii and Ceramium fastigiramosum before disturbance, while Lyngbya semiplena, Lyngbya lutea and Lyngbya rivulariarum after disturbance as pioneer colonizers.nizers.

  • The Blue-green algae collected from whole coasts of Korea were investigated morphotaxonomically in order to list up Korean marine Cyanophyta and clarify their taxnomic position. As a result, 36 species, 20 genus, 6 families belonging to 3 orders were identified. Among these, 14 species were recorded for the first time in Korea. They are Chroococcus minutus (K$\"{u}$tzing) N$\"{a}$geli, Merismopedia punctata Meyen, Microcystis ichtyoblabe K$\"{u}$zing, Dermocarpa leibleiniae (Reinsch) Born. et Thur., Hydrocoleum confluens (Setchell et Gardner) Drouet, Lyngbya sordida (Zanard.) Gomont, Phormidium forveolarum (Mont.) Gomont, Phormidium hansgieri Schmidle, Skujaella hildebrandtii (Gomont.) de Toni, Sphaeronema lithophila (Ercegovic) Umezaki, Spirulina tenerrima K$\"{u}$tzing, Hormothamnion enteromorphoides Grunow, Michrochaete aeruginea Batters, Michrochaete grisea Thuret ex Born. et flah.. Using the phase contrast microscope and the Nomarski interference micrope, we made photomicrographs of minute blue green algae. The cellular inclusions especially PHB(poly-$\SS$-hydroxy-butyrate) granules of the blue-green algae identified were investigated. The species clearly characteriged to have PHB granule were Lyngbya confervoides, L. semiplena, Phormidium corium, Sirocoleum kurzii, Hormothamnion enteromorphoides and Calothrix crustacea. These result would be fundamental data for estabilishing phylogenetic system of blue-green algae based on physio-biochemical characteristics in future.
