The purpose of this paper was to find out the proper equation to predict the gas transfer rate for designing intravenous artificial lung assist device. The prepared hollow fiber modules were examined under various experimental conditions through experimental modeling before inserted the artificial lung assist d $\varepsilon$ vice into as venous. As a result, we can estimate the gas transfer as a function of the packing density. The gas transfer obtained from the experiment was similar to that from the equation, confirming the usefulness equation. Therefore, we can conclude the gas transfer of the intravenous artificial lung assist device as a function of the packing density, and this functions are very useful for predicting the gas transfer of the intravenous artificial lung assist device.

This paper presents the enhancement of oxygen transfer efficiency using the vibrating intravascular lung assist device (VIVLAD) in in-vitro experiments for patients having chronic respiratory problems. The test section was a cylinder duct with the inner diameter of 30 mm. The flow rate was controlled by the pump and monitored by a built-in flow meter. The vibration apparatus was composed of a piezo-vibrator, a function generator. and a power amplifier. The direction of vibration was radial to the fluid flow. Gas flow rates of up to 6 l/min through the 120-cm-Jong hollow fibers have been achieved by exciting a piezo-vibrator. The output of PVDF sensor were investigated by various frequencies in VIVLAD. The experimental results showed that VIVLAD would be enhance oxygen transfer efficiency.
In this study, we try to formularize simultaneous equations to make a prediction about pressure drop for designing intravascular artificial lung assist device. Designing parameters to predict the effect of pressure drop and designed modules under various conditions were studied through an experimental modeling before inserting the artificial lung assist device into as venous. We measured pressure drop in various number of hollow fiber membranes, when the inside diameter of shell is fixed in 3 cm, and tried to develope the prediction equations by curve fitting based on the correlation between the experimental pressure drop and the device frontal area or packing density. The results showed that pressure drop increased with 2nd order functional formula as the liquid flow rate, the frontal area, and the packing density increased. Also, we can estimate the pressure drop as a function of the frontal area or packing density. The pressure drop obtained from the experiment was similar to that from the equation, confirming the usefulness of the equation.
In this paper, the correlation of Pressure drop about the Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid was investigated experimentally for vibrating intravascular lung assist device (VIVLAD) and we determined correlation equation to make a prediction about Pressure drop for designing VIVLAD. Design conditions to predict the pressure drop of the modules were studied through an experimental modeling before inserting the artificial lung assist device into as venous. Experiments were performed by distilled water, glycerol/water mixed solution(40% glycerol) of Newtonian fluids. and the bovine blood of non-Newtonian fluids. These fluids were flowed outside and parallel of hollow fiber membranes. Also we measured pressure drop according to the number of the fiber membranes which ware inserted into the inside diameter of shell of 3 cm, and developed the prediction equations by curve fitting method based on correlation between the experimental pressure drop and the frontal area or the packing density of device. The result showed that the Pressure drop and the friction factor of the water/glycerol mixed solution were similar to that of bovine blood. It was showed that the water/glycerol mixed solution (40% glycerol) could be used for measuring the pressure drop and the friction factor instead of the bovine blood. Also, we could estimate the prediction equation of pressure drop and friction factor as the function of Packing density at the number of hollow fibers. We obtained the reliance of the prediction equations because the pressure drop and the friction factor measured from the experiments were similar to that from the prediction equation. These results may be used to further usefulness for the design of VIVLAD.

The purpose of this work was to assess and quantify the beneficial effects of gas exchange, while testingto the various frequencies of the sinusoidal wave that was excited by the PZT actuator, for patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or chronic respiratory problems. Also, this paper considered a simulator to design a hollow type artificial lung, and a mathematical model was used to predict a behavior of blood. This simulation was carried out according to the Montecarno's simulation method, anda fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the equation. The experimental design and procedure are then applied to the construction of a new device to assess the effectiveness of the membrane vibrations. As a result, the vibration method is very effective in the increase of gas transport. The gas exchange efficiency for the vibrating intravascular lung assist device can be increased by emphasizing the following design features: consistent and reproducible fiber geometry, and most importantly, an active means of enhancing convective mixing of water around the hollow fiber membranes. The experimental results showed the effective performance of the vibrating intravascular lung assist device. Also, we concluded that important design parameters were blood flow rates, fiber outer diameter and oxygen pressure drop. Based on the present results, it was believed that the optimal level of blood flow rates was 200$cm^3$/min.
From April 1989 to December 1993, total 39 patients who were unable to be weaned off CPB or expected fatal immediate postoperiatively, were treated with ventricular assist device [VAD] or extracorporeal membrane oxygenator[ECMO] at the Royal Children`s Hospital, Melbourne. Ages ranged from 3 day to 19.4 year old and body weights from 2.0Kg to 70Kg. Twenty-seven[69.2%] of 39 patients were weaned to be decannulated successfully and sixteen[41.0%] survived to hospital discharge and late survival rate was twelve[30.8%] of 39 patients. The total follow-up period was 4 to 56 months [32.92$\pm$20.77months] and most of the late survivals showed good myocardial recovery state. From the viewpoint of the assist modality, 29 patients were treated with VAD and among them, 23 were weaned from assist successfully, but among the 8 ECMO patients, only 3 could be weaned, and both modalities were performed to the 2 patients with one weaned. The total duration of assist was from 8 to 428 hours and there was a significant difference between hospital discharged group and hospital death group, which were 83.13$\pm$31.29 hours vs 147.52$\pm$112.03 hours[P=0.032]. Conclusively, at the critical postcardiotomy situation of the paediatrtic patients including various congenital complex disease and procedures, we can choose this VAD or ECMO treatment strategy as the reasonable life saving way except transplantation.
Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) is often used in cases of severe respiratory failure, especially in patients considered for lung transplantation. However, because many lung diseases can ultimately result in right heart failure, the treatment of secondary right heart failure can present a challenge when the patient is already under VV ECMO support. In such cases, an oxygenated-right ventricular assist device (OxyRVAD) can be used. OxyRVAD is designed to maintain anterograde blood flow and prevent right ventricular distension. Moreover, the pulmonary arterial cannula can be inserted percutaneously. We report a case in which percutaneous OxyRVAD was successfully implemented to manage right heart failure in a patient with respiratory failure who was on VV ECMO.
The use of the lung assist device (LAD) would be well suited for acute respiratory failure (ARF) patients, combining the simplicity of mechanical ventilation with the ability of extracoporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO) to provide temporary relief for the natural lungs. This study's specific attention was focused on the effect of membrane vibration in the LAD. Quantitative experimental measurements were performed to evaluate the performance of the device, and to identify membrane vibration dependence on blood hemolysis. We tried to decide upon excited frequency band of limit hemolysis when blood hemolysis came to through a membrane vibration action. The excited frequency of the module type 5, consisted of 675 hollow fiber membranes, showed the maximum gas transfer rate. We concluded that the maximum oxygen transfer rate seemed to be caused by the occurrence of maximum amplitude and the transfer of vibration to hollow fiber membranes. It was excited up to $25{\pm}5$ Hz at each blood flow rate of module type 5. We found that this frequency became the 2nd mode resonance riequency of the flexible in blood flow. Blood hemolysis was low at the excited frequency of $25{\pm}5$ Hz. Therefore, we decided that limit hemolysis frequency of this LAD was $25{\pm}5$ Hz.
