  • In this paper, the extended FDTD is used for the analysis of microwave circuits including active elements. Lumped elements such as R, L, C which are inserted into a microstrip line are analyzed with the FDTD lumped element modeling. Parasitic capacitance and inductance could be obtained using network modeling and so it is sure that FDTD lumped element modeling makes it possible to get more accurate data which include parasite components. Moreover, a balanced mixer using two diodes that are modeled by an extended FDTD is designed and the more exact characteristic of the mixer is acquired than in current circuit simulator.

  • Vibration analysis of a thin-walled structure can be performed with a consistent mass matrix determined by the shape functions of all degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) used for construction of conventional stiffness matrix, or with a lumped mass matrix. In similar way stability of a structure can be analysed with consistent geometric stiffness matrix or geometric stiffness matrix with lumped buckling load, related only to the rotational d.o.f. Recently, the simplified mass matrix is constructed employing shape functions of in-plane displacements for plate deflection. In this paper the same approach is used for construction of simplified geometric stiffness matrix. Beam element, and triangular and rectangular plate element are considered. Application of the new geometric stiffness is illustrated in the case of simply supported beam and square plate. The same problems are solved with consistent and lumped geometric stiffness matrix, and the obtained results are compared with the analytical solution. Also, a combination of simplified and lumped geometric stiffness matrix is analysed in order to increase accuracy of stability analysis.

  • The present study numerically analyzed the dynamic behavior of 3D framed structures subject to impulsive slamming forces by violent breaking waves. The structures were modeled using multiple lumped masses for the vertical projections of each member, and the slamming forces from the breaking waves were concentrated on these lumped masses. A numerical algorithm was developed to properly incorporate the slamming forces into a dynamic analysis to numerically determine the structural responses. Then, the validity of the numerical analysis was verified using the results of an existing hydraulic experiment. The numerical and experimental results for various model structures were generally in good agreement. The uncertainties concerning the properties of the breaking waves used in the verification are also discussed here.

  • When a cantilever beam with a lumped mass at its free end undergoes free transverse vibration, internal axial forces are produced in the beam. Such internal axial forces have an effect on free transverse vibration of the beam. This effect is studied in this paper. The equations of motion for the beam in terms of the generalized coordinates including the effect are derived. The method for determining free transverse vibration of the beam including the effect is presented. In numerical simulations, the results of free transverse vibration of the free end of the beam including and not including the effect are obtained. Based on comparison between the results obtained, the conclusions concerning the effect are given.

  • To investigate the affection of lumped mass and spring on the vibration power flow of cross-stiffened plate experiencing bending vibration, structural intensity analysis is done using the modal analysis based on assumed mode method. The numerical analysis is carried out varying the mass and spring constant and their attached positions. The results show that both the spring and the mass may cause to large variation of not only vibratory displacement but also vibratory power flow patterns in case of little change of natural frequencies, and the attachments near to excitation location can effectively reduce the magnitude of maximum structural intensity.

  • In this paper, a modal analysis is applied for a hung Euler-Bernoulli beam with a lumped mass. We first derive the equations of motion using the Hamilton's principle. Then regarding the tension of beam as constant, we characterize the eigenfrequencies and the feature of eigenfunctions. The approximation employed here is corresponding that the lumped mass is sufficiently large than that of beam. Finally we compare the eigenfrequencies derived here with those obtained based on the Southwell's method.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and having two attached masses. Some valves or other mechanical components in pipe systems can be regarded as attached lumped masses. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of attached masses on the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are investigated for various locations and magnitudes of the attached lumped masses.

  • In this paper, a computational analysis using a lumped system model is performed to investigate the hemodynamics of coronary circulation under the operation of T-PLS relevant to the cardiac arrest cases. The coronary circulation system is assumed to be comprised of three compartments: coronary arteries, coronary capillaries, and coronary veins. The effect of myocardial muscle contraction or relaxation is represented by temporal variations in the bias pressure. To verify the present method, we analyzed the coronary circulation for normal case and then compared the results with the existing data. Numerical results on the cardiac arrest model showed that T-PLS can increase LAD flow significantly.

  • In UHF, VHF new design method of samll-sized 3-dB 0$^{\circ}$/180$^{\circ}$ ring hybrid terminated arbitrary impedance using both lumped elements and distributed elements is presented. At the center frequency of 900 MHz, 3-dB 0$^{\circ}$/180$^{\circ}$ ring hybrid terminated arbitrary impedance is designed, analyzed and tested. Good agreements are obtained between measured and theoretical modeling results, and at the same time, the circuit area of hybrid fabricated with two dimensional parallel coupled line, distributed elements and lumped elements is reduced by more than 70% compared with only distribyted-type circuits.
