  • In this study, the numerical code for the 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis of an SLWR (Steel Lazy Wave Riser) was developed using the lumped mass line model in a FORTRAN environment. Because the lumped mass line model is an explicit method, there is no matrix operation. Thus, the numerical algorithm is simple and fast. In the lumped mass line model, the equations of motion for the riser were derived by applying the various forces acting on each node of the line. The applied forces at the node of the riser consisted of the tension, shear force due to the bending moment, gravitational force, buoyancy force, riser/ground contact force, and hydrodynamic force based on the Morison equation. Time integration was carried out using a Runge-Kutta fourth-order method, which is known to be stable and accurate. To validate the accuracy of the developed numerical code, simulations using the commercial software OrcaFlex were carried out simultaneously and compared with the results of the developed numerical code. To understand the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of an SLWR, dynamic simulations of SLWRs excited at the hang-off point and of SLWRs in regular waves were carried out. From the results of these dynamic simulations, the displacements at the maximum bending moments at important points of the design, like the hang-off point, sagging point, hogging points, and touch-down point, were observed and analyzed.

  • The ball screw preloaded for high nigidity and accuracy increases frictional resistance, therefore, its temperature and positioning error rise. In this paper, 2 diamensional temperature distributions of a ball screw with preload are analyzed according to the rotational speeds and stop times by a finite element method. The theremal behaviors of a ball screw are measured to examine the analyzed datum. The examined results show that the trends of temperature rising and axial distributions in steady state are nearly extimate but the temperature low. The differences of temperature ate seems to be caused by not exact heat transfer coefficients. More than an hour is consumed for calculation by FEM. So the modified lumped method for the real-time estimation of the thermal distribution is proposed. The estimated temperature of a ball serw by the modified lumped method is more exactly estimated than by FEM, nd that method takes less than several millisec. Moreover it can be used to estimate heat transfer coefficients.

  • This paper deals with the electromagnetic and thermal analysis of high speed induction motor. The induction motor is analyzed by time-varying magnetic finite element method and its thermal analysis is carried out by using analytical lumped-circuit method. Analysis results are compared with the experiment of 29kW high speed motor prototype at 12,000rpm.

  • In this paper, we discuss the modeling of flexible manipulators. In the modeling of flexible manipulators, there are two approaches: one is based on the distributed-parameter modeling and the other on the lumped-parameter modeling. The former has been applied to control and analysis of simple manipulator requiring precision, while the latter has been applied to multi-link spatial manipulator, because of the model's simplicity. We have already proposed the lumped-parameter modeling method for simple manipulator, and investigate that model of how much degree of precision we can get. The experiments and simulations are performed, comparing these results, the approximate performance of our modeling method is discussed.

  • Abroad-band design method of a lumped-element 3 dB quadrature hybrid without magnetic coupling is proposed and discussed, where techniques of cascading fundamental hybrids via second-order delay equializers and adding matching sections are adopted. It is shown that the designed broad-band lumped-element 3 dB quadrature hybrid can be easily constructed and its bandwidth reaches up to 54%. Furthermore, the experiments have been carried out, the results of which agree with the theoretical ones, and hence, the validity of the broad-band design method proposed here was confirmed.

  • A new method to miniaturize ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line of power divider is proposed. The method utilizes simple combination of the shorted coupled-line pair instead of the transmission line with very high impedance and shunt lumped capacitors. The length of ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line of power divider is about 16% over the conventional power divider at 1 GHz.

  • In general, the battery module of an electric vehicle (EV) consists of lithium-ion cells. A lithium-ion battery is a secondary rechargeable battery, and it consists of numerous stacked plates that serve as electrodes and separators. Owing to these microstructural features, its numerical analysis is very expensive. Therefore, this study aims to present a simplified thermal analysis model using equivalent thermal properties, and we compare the experimental results with numerical results for 185.3Ah and 20Ah cells. Furthermore, we show the thermal behavior of cells without the finite element method (FEM) or finite volume method (FVM) by adopting the lumped capacitance method (LCM).

  • High speed engines with high power are increasingly on demands and almost engines employ crankshafts Such problems as bending and torsional vibrations become the point at issue in crankshaft analysis and design. In this study to overcome the diffiiculty with the large amount of computation in finite element vibration analysis of a crankshaft, a reduction method based on influence coefficient and lumped parameter is presented. which reduces the computation amount effectively and can be used in vibrational analysis and design of any types of crankshafts Crank journal and pinparts are meodelled as elements with 6degrees of freedom per node. Crank web part is modelled using equivalent mass and stiffness matices . based up on lumped parameter and influence coefficient respectively to reduce total degrees of freedom considerablely. To confirm the scheme of the study the results are compared with the known data and they are coincident. Also a simple crankshaft is designed and manufactured for experiments. • Electromagnetic valve (EMV) actuation system is a new technology for improving fuel efficiency and at the same time reducing omissions in internal combustion engines. It can provide more flexibility in valve event control compared with conventional variable valve actuation devices. The electromagnetic valve actuator must be designed by taking the operating conditions and engine geometry limits of the internal combustion engine into account. To help develop a simple design method, this paper presents a procedure for determine the basic design parameters and dimensions of the actuator from the relations of the valve dynamics, electromagnetic circuit and thermal loading condition based on the lumped method. To verify the accuracy of the lumped method analysis, experimental study is also carried out on a prototype actuator. It is found that there is a relatively good agreement between the experimental data and the results of the proposed design procedure. Through the whole speed range, the actuator maintains proper performances in valve timing and event control.

  • In this paper, the lumped element model parameter estimation method and its implemented estimation software for fabricated floating mass transducers of IMEHDs have been presented so that the estimated parameter values could be compared with the designed ones and applied to predict the output performance when the transducers were implanted into human ears. The presented method is based on the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) for estimating parameters in the transducer's lumped model and has been implemented by the use of LabVIEW graphical language. Using the implemented estimation software, the accuracy of parameter estimation has been verified and our implemented estimation method has been evaluated by the comparison of the estimated transducer parameter values with the designed ones for a practically fabricated floating mass transducer for IMEHDs.
