  • We present the temperature and excitation power density dependence of the photoluminescence from carbon-doped GaAs epilayers grown on GaAs (311)A substrate by atmospheric pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The measured temperature dependence of the PL peak energy is well expressed by an empirical formula proposed by Varshni. The thermal quenching mechanism of the intensity of 16 K luminescence peak at 1.480 eV is described with the dominant activation energy of 27$\pm$2 meV. The activation energy shows an evidence that the emission band involves the carbon acceptor in the recombination process.

  • Green light emitting $Zn_2SiO_4$Mn and Al co-doped $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor were synthesized by a sol-gel method combined with a furnace firing. The luminescent properties of the sample have been investigated. We have found that the phosphor powder with uniform shape show the maximum luminescent intensity when it is prepared with sol-gel method and fired at relatively high temperature ($1100{\sim}1300^{\circ}C$).

Study of Anisotropic Photoluminescence and Energy Transfer in Oriented Dye-incorporating Zeolite-L Monolayer

  • Development of the methods to organize zeolite microcrystals into closely packed and uniformly aligned monolayers on various substrates have been pursued viewing microparticles as a novel class of building blocks. We now report that the vertically aligned zeolite monolayer can be applied as novel supramolecularly organized systems for anisotropic photoluminescence in high dichroic ratio, to study energy transfer dynamics between the internal and external fluorophores, and to develop zeolite-based advanced materials. Study of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and angle-dependent intensity change with dye molecules in different surroundings further provides insight into molecular interactions that can be used for the future design of optoelectronic device in nanometer size. In addition, this report shows that isolating of organic dye through surface treatment is crucial for preventing the egress of the incorporated dye molecules from the channels of zeolite to the solution and to enhance the anisotropic luminescence.

Preparation and Luminescence Properties of $LaPO_4:Eu/:LaPO_4$ Core/Shell Nanoparticle

  • Due to an efficient red emission, $Eu^{+3}$ ions have doped in various host materials. Eu-doped $LaPO_4/LaPO_4$ core/shell nanophosphor which emits red light in visible range, was synthesized by using a solution system. The mean size of the nanoparticle observed by TEM was about 7-8 nm. In this core/shell system, the thickness of $LaPO_4$ shell was optimized on the basis of relative PL emission intensity. In addition, the luminescent properties of $LaPO_4:Eu/LaPO_4$ core/shell particle have been compared with Eu-doped $LaPO_4$ bulk particle and nanoparticle.

Aging Characteristics of the Green Phosphors for PDP Application

  • The picture quality of a plasma display panel is very sensitive to the phosphor characteristics such as decay time, surface state, and even longevity of phosphor material in itself. In this work, material characteristics of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$, $Y_2O_3-coated$ $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$, and $YBO_3:Tb$, which are dominant in commercial application, were examined for investigating the aging characteristics of green PDP phosphors. It was found that $Y_2O_3-coated$ $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ are easily degraded at high temperature. However, all the samples were very weak after vacuum annealing. The luminescence intensity was decreased by order of one magnitude.

  • A search for a new phosphor composition of excellent performance in systematic ways requires lots of research efforts, and often turns out to be very timeconsuming and difficult. Thus, usually practical ways are taken to improve the performance of phosphors. A few examples of practical surface treatments on phosphors such as $In_2O_3$ coating on $ZnGa_2O_4:Mn$, phosphoric acid treatment on ZnS:Ag,Cl, and base KOH treatment with ultrasonication on ZnS:Ag,Cl are presented. The reasons for the improvement of luminescence intensity or degradation properties after these treatments are discussed based upon careful analyses on the surface of the phosphors and a proposed model on charge carriers generated by electron beam excitation.

  • The $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphors were prepared using polymer matrix technique in order to improve the performance of green emitting phosphors for plasma display panel(PDP). $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor exhibits a strong green emission around 520-530 nm. The emission intensity and particle size of powders were controlled by sintering temperature and raw material composition. The zinc silicate $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ single phase were obtained at lower temperature than prepared by solid-state reaction method. PL luminance of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ phosphor was similar to the commercial material.

  • ZnS:Mn yellow phosphors doped with Cu for white light emitting diodes were synthesized by solid state reaction method. Photoluminescence excitation spectra originated from $Mn^{2+}$ were ranged from 450 nm to 500 nm. The yellow emission at around 580 nm was associated with $^4T_1{\rightarrow}^6A_1$ transition of $Mn^{2+}$ ions in ZnS:Mn,Cu phosphors. The highest photoluminescence intensity of the phosphors under 405 nm excitation was obtained at Cu concentration of 0.02 mol%.

  • A novel ceramic synthesis technique, combustion synthesis, is explored to produce an orange-emitting $SnO_2:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors. This technique involves a reaction of metal salts with a citric acid as an organic fuel. The variation of the ratio of citric acid to metal introduces change in reaction temperature and atmosphere of the combustion reaction, which in turn influences crystallinity and luminescence properties of the final products significantly. And the heat treatment of the as-synthesized product improved the CL intensity of the products. Especially, the sample treated at above 1100 $^{\circ}C$ shows an orange-emission, which is attributed to the formation of single phase and well-crystallized $SnO_2$:Eu in rutile structure.

  • The phosphors of high luminous efficiency for PDP application must have high purity, single phase, and dense surface. In this work, the polymeric reaction was applied to preparation of spherical phosphor by aerosol pyrolysis in order to enhance mechanical and optical characteristics. The red phosphor of (Y,Gd)$BO_3$:Eu was prepared from polymeric precursor, in which citric acid and ethylene glycol were used as ion carriers, i.e monomers. For enhancing the luminescence intensity and mechanical characteristics. optimum synthesizing condition were investigated through concentration of monomers, synthetic temperature. doped activator concentrations, and annealing process. The phosphors synthesized with monomers showed quite different morphology from those without monomers. It was observed that polymeric precursor made an effect on particle formation mechanism and status of particles surface. The resultant spherical phosphors show the comparable luminescent properties to the commercial product (product by Nichia co.). Also, they were observed to have the rigid surface.
