Optical Characteristics of Phosphorescent Materials with Water-based Ceramics (축광세라믹스의 광학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study is intended to examine the degree of phosphorescent luminance in proportion to the amount of phosphorescent pigments in the ceramic based coating. The results of this study were that the degree of phosphorescent luminance was Increased in proportion to the amount of phosphorescent pigments in the ceramic based coatings. Samples with more than $20\%$ of phosphorescent pigments exceeded the Japanese Industrial Standard for security signs. Luminance levels 10 times greater than the KS and JIS standard were obtained with a concentration of $50\%$. The luminance increased initially with the number of applications of the ceramic based coating but there was no further increase for more than 4 applications. The water-based phosphorescent ceramics developed here are made entirely of inorganic materials and do not generate toxic gases. The optical characteristics of these materials makes them suitable for use in phosphorescent emergency exit signs in place of the traditionally used vinyl chloride materials.

Electroluminescence Characteristics of OLED by Full-Wave Rectification Alternating Current Driving Method (전파 정류 교류 구동 방식에 의한 OLED의 전계발광 특성)

  • Single OLED and tandem OLED was manufactured to analyze the electroluminescence characteristics of DC driving, AC driving, and full-wave rectification driving. The threshold voltage of OLED was the highest in DC driving, and the lowest in full-wave rectification driving due to an improvement of current injection characteristics. The luminance at a driving voltage lower than 10.5 V (8,534 cd/m2) of single OLED and 20 V (7,377 cd/m2) of a tandem OLED showed that the full-wave rectification drive is higher than that of DC drive. The luminous efficiency of OLED is higher in full-wave rectification driving than in DC driving at low voltage, but decrease at high voltage. The full-wave rectification power source may obtain higher current density, higher luminance, and higher current efficiency than the AC power source. In addition, it was confirmed that the characteristics of AC driving and full-wave rectification driving can be predicted from DC driving characteristics by comparing the measured values and calculated values of AC driving and full-wave rectification driving emission characteristics. From the above results, it can be seen that OLED lighting with improved electroluminescence characteristics compared to DC driving is possible using full-wave rectification driving and tandem OLED.

Evaluation of the Lighting Characteristics in High Power White LED Module with Cooling Condition (방열 조건에 따른 5W급 고출력 백색 LED 모듈의 광 특성 평가)

  • The performance and lighting characteristics of the LED depend on cooling condition because the power LED generates lots of heat. In this paper, the effect of the generated heat from power LED module on lighting characteristics and performance is measured and evaluated. For experiments, the transient temperature of a power LED module with cooling condition is measured. In addition, the temperature and lighting characteristics of the LED module are measured during the steady state. As a result, the cooling condition is less effective on the lighting characteristics of the LED module at rated current but the cooling condition extremely affects those of the LED module over the rated current. Because high temperature of the power LED module causes the low phosphor conversion, luminance efficiency becomes low and color temperature becomes high. When power LED module are driven over the rated condition, higher temperature is directly related to lighting characteristics and performance of the LED module rather than higher current.

Efficient Video Retrieval Scheme with Luminance Projection Model (휘도투시모델을 적용한 효율적인 비디오 검색기법)

  • A number of video indexing and retrieval algorithms have been proposed to manage large video databases efficiently. The video similarity measure is one of most important technical factor for video content management system. In this paper, we propose the luminance characteristics model to measure the video similarity efficiently. Most algorithms for video indexing have been commonly used histograms, edges, or motion features, whereas in this paper, the proposed algorithm is employed an efficient similarity measure using the luminance projection. To index the video sequences effectively and to reduce the computational complexity, we calculate video similarity using the key frames extracted by the cumulative measure, and compare the set of key frames using the modified Hausdorff distance. Experimental results show that the proposed luminance projection model yields the remarkable improved accuracy and performance than the conventional algorithm such as the histogram comparison method, with the low computational complexity.

Electrical Properties of Organic light-emitting Diode with Oxygen Plasma Treatment (산소 플라즈마 처리에 따른 유기 발광 다이오드의 전기적 특성)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the electric characteristics of the OLEDs device of which anode ITO has been treated with the oxygen plasma. We fabricated the basic three-layer structure (ITO / AF / $Alq_3$ / $Cs_2CO_3$ / Al) device, analyzed how the oxygen plasma treatments of the ITO surface affects to the electrical characteristics of OLEDs. We also produced a four-layer structure device (ITO / AF / TPD / $Alq_3$ / $Cs_2CO_3$ / Al) with the oxygen plasma treatment. From the comparative analysis to the devices, we confirmed following results. The three-layer structure OLEDs device with oxygen plasma treatment has better characteristics than the device without the treatments; maximum luminance, luminous efficiency, and external quantum efficiency are improved approximately 151 [%], 126 [%], and 175[%], respectively. Also, the electric characteristics of the four-layer structure device with oxygen plasma treatment are improved comparing to the characteristics of the three-layer structure device with oxygen plasma treatment; maximum luminance, luminous efficiency, and external quantum efficiency are improved approximately 144 [%], 115 [%], and 124[%], respectively.

Discharge Characteristics of AC-PDPs with a grooved front dielectric layer

  • The influence of the grooved dielectric layer on discharge and luminous characteristics has been investigated for various depths of the groove to achieve a high luminance efficiency AC-PDP operated at a lower voltage. We use the voltagethreshold curve technique and address delay jitters to explain the discharge characteristics. It shows that the surface discharge voltage rely on the depth of the grooved dielectric layer. Vertical discharge voltage remains almost the same as the groove depth increases.   • A combined PC and TV monitor has been developed in several companies. The characteristics of physical user interface in this monitor are likely to vary from existing monitors. Therefore, two experiments to investigate the physical interface characteristics of this monitor were conducted. The first experiment was to investigate the characteristics of color perception with monitor coating (coating vs. non-coating) and screen brightness (30fL vs. 35fL) in the PC mode. The second experiment was to investigate the characteristics of luminance contrast with monitor coating and image movement (static vs. dynamic) in the TV mode. Twenty-three subjects (male 12, female 11) were participated in this experiment. In the first experiment, average color temperatures were obtained in all experimental conditions. There was a significant difference between coating and non-coating screen at 0.1 level. In the second experiment, average luminance contrasts were obtained in all experimental conditions. There was a significant difference between coating and non-coating screen at 0.05 level. In addition, there was a significant difference between static picture and dynamic picture at 0.1 level.

The Effects of Deposition Rate on the Physical Characteristics of OLEDs (유기발광 다이오드의 물성에 미치는 증착속도의 영향)

  • Organic light-emitting diodes(OLEOs) are attractive because of possible application in display with low operating voltage, low power consumption, self-emission and capability of multicolor emission by the selection of emissive material. We investigated the effects of deposition rate on the electrical characteristics, physical characteristics and optical characteristics of OLEOs in the ITO(indium-tin-oxide)/N.N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methyphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine(TPD)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum($Alq_3$)/Al device. We measured current density, luminous flux and luminance characteristics of devices with varying deposition rates of TPD and $Alq_3$. It has been found that optimal deposition rate of TPD and $Alq_3$ were respectively $1.5{\AA}/s$ from the device structure. An AFM measurement results, surface roughness of the deposited film was the lowest when deposition rate was $1.5{\AA}/s$.

  • The gas mixture ratio of PDP discharges plays a very important role in the discharge characteristics of a plasma display panel. The increase of Xe contents results in the increases of luminance and luminous efficiency while it also results in the increase of the breakdown voltage. The addition of He gas increases the brightness and the luminous efficiency. Especially, the luminance and the luminous efficiency have a maximum value when the partial pressure of He is about 10% of the total pressure for a standard plasma display panel with Xe fraction of $10\sim30%$.

  • Recently, LED(Light Emitting Diode) TV has attracted greate attention due to its super-slim form factore as well as low power consumption. LED TV is actually an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) TV in which edge-lit LED backlight is adopted. In the presente study, we report on the comparison of optical characteristics 55-inch edge-lit LED backlight and CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lam)backlight. The angular distribution of the luminance and the on-axis luminance gain on each optical component were investigated and compared. The effect of the backlight structure on the performance of the optical films was studied and discussed.
