Experimental Study of Cutting force and Surface Roughness Prediction in MQL Tooling of Al 6061 (Al 6061 MQL 선삭가공에서 절삭력과 표면거칠기 예측에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Cooling lubricants are used in machining operations in order to reduce friction at the tool-chip and tool-workpiece interfaces, cool both chip and tool, and remove chip. Furthermore, they influence a strong effect on the shearing mechanisms and, consequently, on the machined surface quality and tool wear. However, several researchers state that the costs related to cutting fluids is frequently higher than those related to cutting tools. Moreover, the cooling lubricants cause an increase in both worker's health and social problems related to their use and correct disposal. Therefore, many researchers have focused on the environmentally conscious machining technologies. One of the technologies is known as MQL(Minimum Quantity Lubrication) machining. In this paper, an experimental model to obtain the optimal cutting conditions in MQL turning was suggested, and the effects of cutting conditions on surface roughness and cutting force were analyzed. For these purposes, FFD (Fractional Factorial Design) and RSM (Response Surface Methods) were used for the experiment. Cutting force and surface roughness with different cutting conditions were measured through the external cylindrical turning of Al 6061 based on the experiment plan. The measured data were analyzed by regression analysis and verification experiments with random conditions were conducted to confirm the suggested experimental model.

  • Friction properties of automotive brake pads containing different types of abrasivess were investigated. Five different abrasives, including o-quartz, magnesia, magnetite, alumina, zircon, were employed in this investigation and size effects of the abrasives on friction characteristics were also studied using 1, 50, 140$\mu\textrm{m}$ size zircon. Experimental results showed that the hardness and size of these abrasive particles were strongly related to friction behaviors and wear mechanisms. Harder and smaller abrasives showed higher friction coefficient and more wear. The surfaces of friction materials with different sizes of abrasives showed that two different modes of abrasion (two-body and three-body abrasion) appeared during sliding. Considering the above results, abrasive materials were thought to destroy transfer film and the extent of the destruction depends on the types and sizes of abrasive particles. A mechanism of the wear mode transition (two-body to three body abrasive motion) was suggested considering the binding energy and friction energy in terms of abrasive particle size.

A Study on Fretting-Wear Behavior of Inconel 690 due to Surrounding Temperature (주위 온도에 따른 Inconel690의 마멸 거동에 관한 연구)

  • In nuclear power steam generators, high flow rates can induce vibration of the tubes resulting in fretting wear damage due to contacts between the tubes and their supports. In this paper the fretting wear tests and the sliding wear tests were performed using the steam generator tube materials of Inconel 690 against STS 304. Sliding tests with the pin-on-disk type tribometer were done under various applied loads and sliding speeds at air and water environment. Fretting tests were done under various vibrating amplitudes, applied normal loads and various temperatures. From the results of sliding and fretting wear tests, the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur. At room temperature, the wear coefficient K of Inconel 690 is 7.57${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in air and it is 1.93${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in water. At room temperature, it is found that the wear volume in air is more than in water. In water, the wear coefficient K at 50$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$ is 4.35${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ and 5.81${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ respectively, Therefore, it is found that the wear volume extremely increases by increasing on temperature in water. This study shows that the dissolved oxygen with temperature increment increases and the wear due to fluidity is severe.

Research Trends in the Nanoscale Friction and Surface Characteristics of Graphene (그래핀의 나노스케일 마찰 및 표면 특성에 대한 연구동향)

  • Since the discovery of single-layer graphene, exploiting graphene's excellent physical/chemical properties in tribology systems has been a topic of interest in academia over the last few decades. There is no doubt that understanding the underlying friction mechanism of graphite should precede this. Even now, new properties of graphene are being reported in academia, and based on this, studies exploring the origins of graphene's surface properties and friction characteristics in a wide range of scales are also being performed. From the perspective of lubrication engineering, graphene research can be largely divided into studies that 1) reveal its basic friction mechanism at the nanoscale and 2) explore its application in macroscale sliding systems. At the nanoscale, the basic friction mechanism of graphene is mainly due to its atomic thickness. In this paper, the various research on the nanoscale friction and surface characteristics of graphene is reviewed. Graphene surface properties, such as wettability and surface energy and the basic friction mechanisms of graphene attributed to adhesion, electronphonon scattering, bending stiffness, and the underlying substrate, are summarized. Further, we provide the research outcomes on the superlubricity of graphene. Finally, the potential application and challenges of the superlubricity of graphene are highlighted. Through this, we intend to provide summarized information to researchers interested in the tribological properties of graphene and help set the direction of future research.

Mechanism Study of Sticking Occurring during Hot Rolling of Ferritic Stainless Steel (페라이트계 스테인리스강의 열간압연 시 발생하는 Sticking 기구 연구)

  • Mechanisms of sticking phenomena occurring during hot rolling of a modified STS 430J1L ferritic stainless steel have been investigated in this study by using a pilot-plant-scale rolling machine. As the rolling pass proceeds, the Fe-Cr oxide layer formed in a reheating furnace is destroyed, and the destroyed oxides penetrate into the rolled steel to form a thin oxide layer on the surface region. The sticking does not occur on the surface region containing oxides, whereas it occurs on the surface region without oxides by the separation of the rolled steel at high temperatures. This indicates that the resistance to sticking increases by the increase in the surface hardness when a considerable amount of oxides are formed on the surface region, and that the sticking can be evaluated by the volume fraction and distribution of oxides formed on the surface region. The lubrication and the increase of the rolling speed and rolling temperature beneficially affect to the resistance to sticking because they accelerate the formation of oxides on the steel surface region. In order to prevent or minimize the sticking, thus, it is suggested to increase the thickness of the oxide layer formed in the reheating furnace and to homogeneously distribute oxides along the surface region by controlling the hot-rolling process.

Wear Properties of Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (하이브리드 금속복합재료의 마모특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/A12O3/Al and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester under both dry and lubricated conditions. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil fibers, $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction(COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Under dry sliding condition, Saffil/SiC/Al showed the best wear resistance under high temperature and high load, while the wear resistances of Saffil/Al and Saffi1/$\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$/Al were very similar. Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.
