비대칭 마그네트론 스퍼터링법에 의한 비정질 질화탄소 박막의 합성 및 윤활 특성 (Synthesis and Lubricant Properties of Nitrogen doped Amorphous Carbon (a-C:N) Thin Films by Closed-field unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering Method)

  • The incorporation of N in a-C film is able to improve the friction coefficient and the adhesion to various substrates. In this study, a-C:N films were deposited on Si and steel substrates by closed-field unbalanced magnetron (CFUBM) sputtering system in $Ar/N_2$ plasma. The lubricant characteristics was investigated for a-C:N deposited with total working pressure from 4 to 7 mTorr. We obtained high hardness up to 24GPa, friction coefficient lower than 0.1 and the smooth surface of having the extremely low roughness (0.16 nm). The physcial properties of a-C:N thin film are related to the increase of cross-linked $sp^2$ bonding clusters in the film. However, the decrease of hardness, elastic modulus and the increase of surface roughness, friction coefficient with the increase of $N_2$ partial pressrue might be due to the effect of energetic ions as a result of the increase of ion bombardment with the increase of ion density in the plasma.

  • Molybdenum dialkyl dithiophosphate(MoDTP) 마찰특성을 이원통 마찰시험기에 의한 마찰실험 및 X-선광전자분광분석기를 이용하여 마찰표면을 분석함으로써 MoDTP의 마찰감소 작용에 대해 고찰하였다 MoDTP의 마찰감소작용은 마찰표면에 생성하는 MoS$_2$에 의존하였다. 몰리브덴(Mo)이 용이하게 금속내부로 확산하는 질소분위기 중에서는 MoDTP의 마찰감소 특성은 나타나지 않았으며, 금속표면에 산화피막이 존재할 때 MoDTP의 마찰감소작용이 잘 나타남을 알 수 있었다

  • Wire drawing is aplastic deformation process that produces a wire with a desired diameter by pulling the end of the wire through a die. During the cold wire drawing process, the temperature between the wire and the die bearing is increased. This temperature increase causesenergy consumption increase, bad wire quality, and decreased die life. To reduce friction and avoid high temperature between the wire and the die in the cold wire drawing process, a dry lubricant with soap particles is used. It is not possible to reused the lubricant onceiron oxide is attached to the soap particlesat high pressure die. In this study, recycling technologies for wasted soap particles with processes of crushing, separation, and screening are developed. From the evaluation, the recycling efficiency was found to be 86.97%.

AI 합금 정밀단조를 위한 금형설계 및 공정조건의 영향 (The Effects of the Process and Die Design for Precision Forging of Al Alloys)

  • Al forged parts are many cases with rib-web section which is difficult to manufacture precisely. Therefore, process conditions must be optimized for precision forging of Al alloys. In this study, various process parameters such as die design, lubricant, ram speed, forging temperature have been investigated using the experiment, upper bound theory and F.E.M. simulation to develop the precision forging technology for rib-web shape component. When lubricant is applied to both material and die, shear friction factor is 0.1 which shows best effect of lubricant. It is specific corner radius of die that minimized forging load regarding process conditions, especially according to the ratio of the width of rib and web. In conclusion, optimum corner radius is 2~3mm when the width of rib and web is 3mm and 20mm respectively.

박판성형 마찰거동에 미치는 블랭크 홀딩력의 영향 (Effects of Blank Holding Force on the Friction Behavior in Sheet Metal Forming)

  • In order to examine the effect of the blank holding force on the friction behavior in the sheet metal forming, a sheet metal friction tester is designed and manufactured, which can measure friction forces in various forming conditions such as lubrication, die roughness, drawing speed, radius of die corner, blank holding force, etc., and the friction tests are performed, in which friction coefficients in various blank holding forces and pulling speeds are calculated using Coulomb's friction law. The friction test reveals that friction coefficient decreases as the blank holding force, the drawing speed and lubricant viscosity increase together or individually.

  • Friction materials with three different formulations containing different solid lubricants were investigated to study the role of lubricants on the friction performance. The three friction materials contained graphite 10 vol.%, graphite 7 vol.%+$MoS_2$ 3 vol.%, and graphite 7 vol.%+$Sb_2S_3$ 3 vol.%, respectively, with the same amount of other ingredients. Results of this work showed that each formulation with different lubricants had unique advantages and disadvantages. The friction materials containing graphite 7 vol.%+$MoS_2$ 3 vol.% and graphite 7 vol.%+$Sb_2S_3$ 3 vol.% showed better resistance to fading and improved friction stability compared to the friction materials containing graphite only as a lubricant. However, the friction materials with two lubricants (graphite+$MoS_2$ or $Sb_2S_3$) showed disadvantages on DTV generation and rotor wear.

피스톤 링과 실린더 라이너에서의 마찰저감 기술개발 (Development of Friction Reduction Method between Piston Ring and Cylinder Liner)

  • The friction loss between piston rings and cylinder liner is due to the tension of the piston rings. Lubricant is usually supplied to reduce the friction. However, the sliding speed of the piston varies during the reciprocating cycle and is very low near TDC(Top Dead Center)/BDC(Bottom Dead Center), where the hydrodynamic lubrication cannot be sustained. Since the lubrication regime is shifted from the hydrodynamic to the boundary lubrication near TDC/BDC, wear particles are easily generated so that the friction loss becomes bigger and bigger due to the plowing effect of wear particles. In this study, for the purpose of reducing the friction loss, an undulated surface is adopted to the cylinder liner to trap wear particles. The friction force variations, which are measured by strain gaged, show that the concept of undulated surface is one of the promising methods to effectively reduce the friction between piston rings and cylinder liner.

구형 및 평면 원자현미경 탐침에 대한 2차원 소재의 마찰 특성 (Frictional Properties of Two-dimensional Materials against Spherical and Flat AFM Tips)

  • Two-dimensional materials such as graphene, h-BN, and $MoS_2$ have attracted increased interest as solid lubricant and protective coating layer for nanoscale devices owing to their superior mechanical properties and low friction characteristics. In this work, the frictional properties of single-layer graphene, h-BN, and $MoS_2$ are experimentally investigated under various normal forces using atomic force microscope (AFM) tips with a spherical and flat end, with the aim to gain a better understanding of frictional behaviors. The nonlinear relationship between friction and normal force friction was clearly observed for single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ specimens slid against the spherical and flat AFM tips. The results also indicate that single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ exhibit low frictional properties (e.g., friction coefficient below 0.1 under 70~100 nN normal force). In particular, graphene is found to be superior to h-BN and $MoS_2$ in terms of frictional properties. However, the friction of single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ against the flat tip is larger than that against the spherical tip, which may be attributed to the relatively large adhesion. Furthermore, it is shown that the fluctuation of friction is more significant for the flat tip than the spherical tip. The resutls of this study may be helpful to elucidate the feasibility of using two-dimensional materials as solid lubricant and protective coating layer for nanoscale devices.

  • It is a time to introduce a concept of lubrication to space systems. Minimum amount of lubricant should be supplied to a contact interface instead of preparing too much lubricant on surfaces of the earth. In situ controllable lubrication method is wanted to overcome unexpected tribo-troubles in space. Tribo-coating, which forms a thin solid film in nm-scale by vacuum deposition during friction, is a promising lubrication method for space.
