Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 Complex Sheet Fabricated by Roll Bonding Process (냉간압연접합법에 의해 제조된 AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 층상 복합판재의 미세조직 및 기계적 성질)

  • A cold roll-bonding process was applied to fabricate an AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 laminate complex sheet. Two AA1050 and one AA6061 sheets of 2 mm thickness, 40 mm width and 300 mm length were stacked up after surface treatment that included degreasing and wire brushing; material was then reduced to a thickness of 3 mm by one-pass cold rolling. The laminate sheet bonded by the rolling was further reduced to 1.2 mm in thickness by conventional rolling. The rolling was performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 210 mm. The rolling speed was 5.0 m/sec. The AA1050/AA6061/AA1050 laminate complex sheet fabricated by roll bonding was then hardened by natural aging T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The microstructures of the as-roll bonded and the age hardened Al complex sheets were revealed by optical microscope observation; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. The strength of the as-roll bonded complex sheet was found to increase by 2.9 times compared to that value of the starting material. In addition, the hardness of the complex sheets increased with cold rolling for AA1050 and age-hardening treatment for AA6061, respectively. After heat treatment, both AA1050 and AA6061 showed typical recrystallization structures in which the grains were equiaxed; however, the grain size was smaller in AA6061 than in AA1050.

  • A roll-bonding process was applied to fabricate an AA1050/AZ91/AA1050 laminate complex sheet. Two AA1050 and one AZ91 magnesium sheets of 2 mm thickness, 30 mm width and 200 mm length were stacked up after surface treatment that included degreasing and wire brushing; material was then reduced to a thickness of 3 mm by one-pass cold rolling. The laminate sheet bonded by the rolling was further reduced to 2 mm in thickness by conventional rolling. The rolling was performed at 623K without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 210 mm. The rolling speed was 15.9 m/min. The AA1050/AZ91/AA1050 laminate complex sheet fabricated by roll bonding was then annealed at 373~573K for 0.5h. The microstructure of the complex sheets was revealed by electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) measurement; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. The strength of the complex sheet was found to increase by 11 % and the tensile elongation decreased by 7%, compared to those values of the starting material. In addition, the hardness of the AZ91 Mg region was slightly higher than those of the AA1050 regions. Both AA1050 and AZ91 showed a typical deformation structure in which the grains were elongated in the rolling direction; however, the mis-orientation distribution of grain boundaries varied greatly between the two materials.

  • It is currently well known that surface textures act as lubricant reservoirs, entrap wear debris, and hydrodynamic bearings, which can lead to certain increases in load-carrying capacities. Until recently, the vast majority of research has focused on parallel sliding machine components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, piston rings, etc. However, most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape in the sliding direction and their hydrodynamic pressure is mainly generated by the wedge action. Following the first part of the present study that investigates the effect of groove position on the lubrication performances of inclined slider bearings, this paper focuses on the effects of groove depths and film thicknesses. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are numerically analyzed. The results show that the film thickness and groove depth have a significant influence on the pressure distribution. The maximum pressure occurs at the groove depth where the vortex is found and, as the depth increases, the pressure decreases. There is also a groove depth to maximize the supporting load with the film thickness. The friction force acting on the slider decreases with deeper grooves. Therefore, properly designed groove depths, depending on the operating conditions, can improve the load-carrying capacity of inclined slider bearings as compared to the bearings without a groove.

Annealing Characteristics of Ultrafine Grained AA1050/AA5052 Complex Aluminum Alloy Sheet Fabricated by Accumulative Roll-Bonding (반복겹침접합 압연공정에 의해 제조한 초미세립 AA1050/AA5052 복합알루미늄합금판재의 어닐링 특성)

  • An ultrafine grained complex aluminum alloy was fabricated by an accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) process using dissimilar aluminum alloys of AA1050 and AA5052 and subsequently annealed. A two-layer stack ARB process was performed up to six cycles without lubricant at an ambient temperature. In the ARB process, the dissimilar aluminum alloys, AA1050 and AA5052, with the same dimensions were stacked on each other after surface treatment, rolled to the thickness reduction of 50%, and then cut in half length by a shearing machine. The same procedure was repeated up to six cycles. A sound complex aluminum alloy sheet was fabricated by the ARB process, and then subsequently annealed for 0.5h at various temperatures ranging from 100 to $350^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength decreased largely with an increasing annealing temperature, especially at temperatures of 150 to $250^{\circ}C$. However, above $250^{\circ}C$ it hardly decreased even when the annealing temperature was increased. On the other hand, the total elongation increased greatly above $250^{\circ}C$. The hardness exhibited inhomogeneous distribution in the thickness direction of the specimens annealed at relatively low temperatures, however it had a homogeneous distribution in specimens annealed at high temperatures.

Two AA6061 and one AA5052 sheets of 2 mm thickness, 40 mm width, and 300 mm length are stacked, with the AA5052 sheet located in the center. After surface treatment such as degreasing and wire brushing, sample is reduced to a thickness of 1.5 mm by multi-pass cold rolling. The rolling is performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 400 mm at rolling speed of 6.0 m/sec. The roll bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 complex sheet is then hardened by natural aging(T4) and artificial aging(T6) treatments. The microstructures of the as-roll bonded and age-hardened Al complex sheets are revealed by optical microscopy; the mechanical properties are investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After rolling, the roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061 sheets show a typical deformation structure in which grains are elongated in the rolling direction. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 sheets. The as roll-bonded specimen shows a sandwich structure in which an AA5052 sheet is inserted into two AA6061 sheets with higher hardness. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, there is a different sandwich structure in which the hardness of the upper and lower layers of the AA6061 sheets is higher than that of the center of the AA5052 sheet. The strength values of the T4 and T6 age-treated specimens are found to increase by 1.3 and 1.4 times, respectively, compared to that value of the starting material.

The roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061/AA5052 layered sheet is then hardened by natural aging (T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The microstructure of the as-roll bonded and the age-hardened Al sheets was revealed by SEM observation; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After T4 and T6 aging treatment, the specimens had a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 regions. The as-roll-bonded specimen showed a clad structure in which the hardness of AA5052 regions was higher than that of AA6061 regions. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, specimens exhibited different structures, with hardness of AA6061 regions higher than that of AA5052 regions. Strengths of T6 and T4 age-treated specimens were found to increase by 1.55 and 1.36 times, respectively, compared to the value of the starting material.

  • Warm, forming technique which is one of the new forming technologies to improve formability of sheet metal is applied to the cylindrical cup drawing of stainless-aluminum. clad sheets. In experiments the temperature of die and blank holder is varied from room temperature to 18$0^{\circ}C$, while the punch is cooled by circulation of coolant to increase the fracture strength of workpiece on the punch corner area. Test materials chosen for experiments are STS304-A1050-STS304, STS304-A1050-STS430 clad sheets and A1050-0 aluminum sheet. Teflon film as a lubricant is used on both sides of a workpiece. The limit drawing ratio as well as quality of drawn cups(distribution of thickness and hardness)are investigated and validity of warm drawing process is also discussed.

  • Effects of conventional rolling(CR) and differential speed rolling(DSR) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy were investigated in detail. The copper alloy with thickness of 3 mm was rolled to 50 % reduction at ambient temperature without lubricant with a differential speed ratio of 2:1. The conventional rolling in which the rolling speed of upper and lower rolls is identical was performed under identical rolling conditions. The shear strain introduced by the CR showed positive values at positions of upper roll side and negative values at positions of lower roll side. However, it showed zero or positive values at all positions for the samples rolled by the DSR. The microstrucure and texture development of the as-rolled copper alloy did not show any significant difference between CR and DSR. The tensile strength of the DSR processed specimen was larger than that of the CR processed specimen. The effects of rolling methods on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled copper alloy are discussed in terms of the shear strain.

Contact Analysis Between Rubber Seal, a Spherical Particle and Coated Steel Surface (시일과 코팅된 스틸면 사이의 구형 입자에 의한 접촉해석)

  • Seals are very useful machine components in protection of leakage of lubricant or working fluid, and incoming of debris from outside. Various elastomer are widely used as sealing materials and the shaft surfaces are generally coated with high hardness material after heat treatment. It is generally known that the foreign debris and wear particles get stuck into sealing surface, the steel shaft surface can be damaged and worn by mainly abrasive wear. In this paper, using MARC, contact analysis are conducted to show the hard coated steel shaft surface can be fatigue failed by very small elastic particle intervened between seal and steel surface. Variations of contact and von-Mises stress distributions and contact half-widths with interference and coating thickness are presented. The maximum von-Mises stress occurs always in the coating layer or between coated layer/substrate interface. Therefore the coated sealing surface can be fatigued and then failed by very small particles. The results can be used in design of sealing surface and further studies are required.

Test materials chosen for experiments are STS304-A1050-STS304 clad sheets. Teflon film as a lubricant is used on both sides of a workpiece. The limit drawing ratio and relative drawing depth as well as quality of drawn cups(distribution of thickness)are investigated and validity of warm drawing process is also discussed. No separation between each laminated material after drawing occurred through inspection by microscope as well as application of penetrant remover and bond strength test. Therefore, warm forming technique was confirmed to give better results in deep drawing of stainless clad sheet metal.
